    Tennyson and the Celts: The Influence and Use of Celticism in the Poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson

    In recent years there has been much focus in Tennyson studies on the poet’s Englishness. However, much less attention has been given to the equally important influence of the Celtic Nations on his poetry. The little work that has been written only touches on specific points in the poet’s long career, with most of the work focusing on his Arthurian poetry. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to create a comprehensive overview of the influence and use of Celticism, which is defined as both the study of the reputation of the Celt and the set of values and stereotypes that surround the people, in the work of Tennyson throughout his career and to explore the poet’s attitudes towards the Celt and how they shift over time through readings of his poetry. In the early phase of his career Tennyson seeks influence from the Celtic, although always to further a sense of English superiority by placing the Celt in the past in relation to the modern Saxon. What sympathy Tennyson has with the Celt is absent in much of his Arthurian poetry, which is designed to promote Saxon domination over the British Isles. This changes later in his career when, driven by threats to the stability of the British Empire, the poet begins to explore a parental relationship where the Saxon teaches the Celt the Saxonist values of stoicism and rationality. However, there is also a sense that the Saxon can learn how to be more Creative and Romantic from the Celt. This places Tennyson alongside the likes of Matthew Arnold as an important figure who can help modern readers understand Nineteenth Century Celticism

    This thesis contains two parts: a craft paper on interiority and seven chapters of a young adult social realism novel. The craft paper explores different strategies for “showing and telling” as a means of conveying interiority in faith-based characters, and it analyzes these strategies in two YA novels, Let’s Call it Doomsday by Katie Henry and Autoboyography by Christina Lauren, both of which center around queer, Mormon characters. The novel chapters in the thesis are from Something Holy, which follows Beck Taylor, an eighteen-year-old, mostly closeted bisexual boy who only has a few months until he leaves on a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Determined to make the most of his time left, he and his cousin Emilia follow Evergreen, their favorite local band, on tour, but when Beck falls for the male drummer Julius, feelings and faith complicate his perfect summer

    Distributed Spatial Data Sharing: a new era in sharing spatial data

    The advancements in information and communications technology, including the widespread adoption of GPS-based sensors, improvements in computational data processing, and satellite imagery, have resulted in new data sources, stakeholders, and methods of producing, using, and sharing spatial data. Daily, vast amounts of data are produced by individuals interacting with digital content and through automated and semi-automated sensors deployed across the environment. A growing portion of this information contains geographic information directly or indirectly embedded within it. The widespread use of automated smart sensors and an increased variety of georeferenced media resulted in new individual data collectors. This raises a new set of social concerns around individual geopricacy and data ownership. These changes require new approaches to managing, sharing, and processing geographic data. With the appearance of distributed data-sharing technologies, some of these challenges may be addressed. This can be achieved by moving from centralized control and ownership of the data to a more distributed system. In such a system, the individuals are responsible for gathering and controlling access and storing data. Stepping into the new area of distributed spatial data sharing needs preparations, including developing tools and algorithms to work with spatial data in this new environment efficiently. Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have become very popular for storing and sharing information in a decentralized approach. However, these networks lack the methods to process spatio-temporal queries. During the first chapter of this research, we propose a new spatio-temporal multi-level tree structure, Distributed Spatio-Temporal Tree (DSTree), which aims to address this problem. DSTree is capable of performing a range of spatio-temporal queries. We also propose a framework that uses blockchain to share a DSTree on the distributed network, and each user can replicate, query, or update it. Next, we proposed a dynamic k-anonymity algorithm to address geoprivacy concerns in distributed platforms. Individual dynamic control of geoprivacy is one of the primary purposes of the proposed framework introduced in this research. Sharing data within and between organizations can be enhanced by greater trust and transparency offered by distributed or decentralized technologies. Rather than depending on a central authority to manage geographic data, a decentralized framework would provide a fine-grained and transparent sharing capability. Users can also control the precision of shared spatial data with others. They are not limited to third-party algorithms to decide their privacy level and are also not limited to the binary levels of location sharing. As mentioned earlier, individuals and communities can benefit from distributed spatial data sharing. During the last chapter of this work, we develop an image-sharing platform, aka harvester safety application, for the Kakisa indigenous community in northern Canada. During this project, we investigate the potential of using a Distributed Spatial Data sharing (DSDS) infrastructure for small-scale data-sharing needs in indigenous communities. We explored the potential use case and challenges and proposed a DSDS architecture to allow users in small communities to share and query their data using DSDS. Looking at the current availability of distributed tools, the sustainable development of such applications needs accessible technology. We need easy-to-use tools to use distributed technologies on community-scale SDS. In conclusion, distributed technology is in its early stages and requires easy-to-use tools/methods and algorithms to handle, share and query geographic information. Once developed, it will be possible to contrast DSDS against other data systems and thereby evaluate the practical benefit of such systems. A distributed data-sharing platform needs a standard framework to share data between different entities. Just like the first decades of the appearance of the web, these tools need regulations and standards. Such can benefit individuals and small communities in the current chaotic spatial data-sharing environment controlled by the central bodies

    Previous literature has confirmed that reality television is less expensive to produce than scripted. This paper investigates both how production costs have developed overall, and how and why they differ between the two genres of scripted and unscripted television. After interviewing professionals in the industry, the results shed light on how the production processes have key differences, perhaps most important being the writer’s presence or lack thereof. The results expose reality television’s function in streaming platforms as retainment content. Streaming platforms are also examined as a catalyst for change in the industry’s landscape, bringing many disruptions along with them. Ad-based and subscription-based platforms are compared. Brand identities are detailed as a major component in the decision of how much reality television each company produces

    The expansion of renewable energy on the national grid has been a struggle throughout the past decade. Rooftop solar photovoltaics (PV) and electric vehicle to Grid (V2G) can function as either load or distributed energy sources. Consequently, presumers can join in a Transactive energy network featuring peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange of excess electricity to enhance the grid load balancing and harmonic filtering performance. The key challenge is keeping track of these transactions and compensating supposing parties. The distributed and unchangeable characteristics of blockchain technology could be utilised to accelerate the ongoing transition to more decentralised and digital energy systems and alleviate some of the challenges the energy sector is now facing. This report presents an experimental design and implementation of a Peer-to-peer blockchain network to exchange electricity energy among participants based on the Ethereum open-source application called Solar Chain App. This demonstration project simulates the P2P Network of the electricity distribution network. A project consists of a primary network and user nodes (user nodes have homeowners and EVs). Homeowners with solar and electric vehicles Participants, assets, and transactions required to establish the blockchain-based network for tracking Buyer and seller output exchanges are described, and the smart contract, use cases, and implementation.     Navigating Complexity in an Internet of Things Era: A Case Study of Entrepreneurial Leadership in a Silicon Valley IoT Startup

    Research into the inner-workings of high-tech startups in the field of leadership within the United States is needed. The accelerating impact of technology on society is clear. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a primary technology of an emergent era, the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). Silicon Valley startups germinate many of these Industry 4.0 IoT technologies. The current understanding of leadership in IoT startups is often based on media reports. recounting villains and heroes. This is not that. This is a qualitative, normative case study based on the researcher’s insider status at an IoT startup. Insider case study research into leadership of this type is sparse. Based on a review of the literature, multiple one-on-one interviews were conducted with leaders in an IoT startup. An additional 12 interviews were conducted with leaders in the IoT startup field. This study asks: What does it take to lead an IoT startup in Silicon Valley? The data supported the use of Goffman’s (1959b) dramaturgy as an analytical tool for leadership. The leadership at IoT Inc. took on prescribed roles in formal and informal settings. Bourdieu’s (2020) social capital, habitus, and field concepts are also supported for analyzing IoT startups. The individuals at IoT Inc. used social capital, and exhibited habitus based on experiences and expertise while interacting with the IoT field. Chia’s (2013) process-orientation and application of knowledge types like techne, metis, and phronesis is supported. Leaders in the case study exhibited complexity-based leadership when pursuing opportunities in an environment of constrained resources. The data demonstrated that entrepreneurial leaders with accumulated social capital and habitus, who understand the dramaturgical context of an emergent technology field, can use forms of expert pragmatic knowledge to navigate the complexity in pursuit of a vision

    Tokens are underutilised artefacts from the ancient world, but as everyday objects they were key in mediating human interactions. This book provides an accessible introduction to tokens from Roman Italy. It explores their role in the creation of imperial imagery, as well as what they can reveal about the numerous identities that existed in different communities within Rome and Ostia. It is clear that tokens carried imagery that was connected to the emotions and experiences of different festivals, and that they were designed to act upon their users to provoke particular reactions. Tokens bear many similarities to ancient Roman currency, but also possess important differences. The tokens of Roman Italy were objects used by a wide variety of groups for particular events or moments in time; their designs reveal experiences and individuals otherwise lost to history
