    Perspectives on the satellite services industry : analysis of challenges and opportunities in the market, policy and regulatory environments

This work is divided in two parts. The first part begins by discussing the background of the communications satellite industry, its value-chain, service applications, history and evolution, and then explores two questions of significant importance to the survival and sustained growth of this industry: 1) are satellite communications solutions competing or complementary alternatives to terrestrial networks-in what context and for what service applications? And 2) what are the characteristics of the regulatory and policy environments and how do they affect the satellite communications industry? In order to address the first question, a framework to analyze the tradeoffs associated with satellite versus terrestrial solutions is developed around three axes: type of solution, service application, and geographic market. It is then argued that satellite solutions and terrestrial networks have a dual character: they are simultaneously competing and complementary technologies. The case is made that satellite solutions have important competitive advantages for voice and data transmission in rural markets and urban areas where terrestrial networks are not available. It is found that consumer video applications represent the most dynamic market with the highest potential of growth for satellite operators. Then, to assess the impact of the regulatory and policy environments, two key regulatory issues are discussed: spectrum/orbit allocation and spacecraft disposal. First, major conflicting issues in frequency bandwidth allocation are discussed.(cont.) Second, it is argued that there is a critical need to enforce space debris regulations, even though such regulations would have short-term negative financial implications for satellite operators. The case is made that a single collision in geostationary orbit (GEO) is likely to create a cascading debris field that can impact the entire fleet of spacecraft in GEO, resulting in significant loss of satellite communications services. In addition, it is found that the U.S. space communications policy is highly flexible, while on the European side there is a need to consolidate and further ease the regulatory environment in order to promote competition. It is argued that more international cooperation in regulatory issues is desirable. The second part of this thesis focuses on the lifeblood of the satellite industry: the satellite itself (as opposed to the industry-context explored in Part 1). In particular, part II explores issues associated with satellite design lifetime. Qualitative arguments are presented for reducing or extending a spacecraft design lifetime, as seen from different stakeholders' perspectives (the manufacturer, the customer, and society at large). Quantitative analyses are then conducted from an operator's perspective, and preliminary results indicate that optimal design lifetimes do exist that maximize a satellite financial/value metric. These results disprove the traditional assumption that satellite operators (customers) are always better off acquiring spacecraft designed for the maximum technically achievable lifetime. Additionally, it is argued that design lifetime is a powerful lever that can impact the market size as well as the financials of the key players in the space sector. Overall, it is shown that the specification of a system's design lifetime requires much more attention than it has received so far in the literature, as it can impact an entire industry value chain.by Juan Pablo Torres-Padilla.S.M

    Potential markets for advanced satellite communications

    This report identifies trends in the volume and type of traffic offered to the U.S. domestic communications infrastructure and extrapolates these trends through the year 2011. To describe how telecommunications service providers are adapting to the identified trends, this report assesses the status, plans, and capacity of the domestic communications infrastructure. Cable, satellite, and radio components of the infrastructure are examined separately. The report also assesses the following major applications making use of the infrastructure: (1) Broadband services, including Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN), Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), and frame relay; (2) mobile services, including voice, location, and paging; (3) Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT), including mesh VSAT; and (4) Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) for audio and video. The report associates satellite implementation of specific applications with market segments appropriate to their features and capabilities. The volume and dollar value of these market segments are estimated. For the satellite applications able to address the needs of significant market segments, the report also examines the potential of each satellite-based application to capture business from alternative technologies

    Η ανάγκη για άμεση συνεισφορά, απόκριση και ακρίβεια των αποτελεσμάτων οδήγησε στην είσοδο των drones και ιδιαίτερα των μη επανδρωμένων εναέριων οχημάτων (UAV) ως νέα τεχνολογικά οχήματα. Ωστόσο, η ενσωμάτωση ενός τόσο κολοσσιαίου τεχνολογικού αποκτήματος δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολη υπόθεση. Πολλές απαιτήσεις εμφανίζονται σε διάφορους τομείς όπως τηλεπικοινωνίες, προβλήματα ωφέλιμου φορτίου που πρέπει να φέρει το UAV και σχέδια λειτουργίας, απαιτήσεις που πρέπει να πληρούνται για την αποφυγή προβλημάτων ασφάλειας, αποφυγή σύγκρουσης, ασταθείς συνδέσεις και άλλα. Σκοπός της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας είναι να μελετήσει όσο το δυνατόν καλύτερα και αποτελεσματικότερα τη συμβολή των δορυφορικών επικοινωνιών στην επίτευξη αξιόπιστων και ανθεκτικών επιχειρήσεων Μη Επανδρωμένων Αεροσκαφών (UAV). Θα παρουσιαστεί μια ανάλυση τριών επιπέδων που θα αφορά τον Σχεδιασμό, τη Μοντελοποίηση και την Ανάλυση δορυφορικών επικοινωνιών σε συνδυασμό με λειτουργίες UAV με τρόπο που η αποτελεσματικότητα της ζεύξης θα είναι μέγιστη εφικτή. Σε τελική ανάλυση, θα πραγματοποιηθεί ένα πείραμα που θα συζητηθούν τα αποτελέσματα και οι παράμετροι που χρησιμοποιούνται προκειμένου να υπολογιστεί η αποτελεσματικότητα του προϋπολογισμού των ζεύξεων. Είναι σημαντικό να γνωρίζουμε ότι οι κυψελοειδείς επικοινωνίες έχουν παίξει μέχρι στιγμής τον πιο σημαντικό και ακριβή ρόλο τόσο στις επίγειες όσο και στις αεροπορικές επικοινωνίες. Αυτό πρόκειται να αλλάξει καθώς οι δορυφόροι υπόσχονται χαρακτηριστικά που δεν μπορούν να ανταγωνιστούν τα επίγεια δίκτυα, με αποτέλεσμα την ενοποίηση των UAV με τις δορυφορικές επικοινωνίες. Ωστόσο, τα πράγματα είναι ασαφή και οι κίνδυνοι που ενέχουν είτε από την άποψη των προσωπικών δεδομένων είτε από την ασφάλεια και την υγεία μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν ως εμπόδιο στην ανάπτυξη και την αναβάθμιση των επικοινωνιών.The need for immediate contribution, response, and accuracy of results has led to the entry of drones and especially Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as new technological vehicles. However, the integration of such a colossal technological acquisition is by no means an easy task. Many requirements appear in various areas such as telecommunications, payload problems that the UAV must carry, and operations plans, requirements that must be met to avoid safety issues, collision avoidance, unstable connections, and so more. The purpose of this thesis is to study as best as possible and most effectively the contribution of satellite communications to achieve reliable and durable Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operations. A three-level analysis will be presented which will concern the Design, Modeling, and Analysis of satellite communications in combination with UAV operations in a way where efficiency of the link will be maximum. After all, an experiment will take place that results and parameters used will be discussed in order to compute the efficiency of the link budget. It is important to know that cellular communications have so far played the most important and accurate role in both terrestrial and air communications. This is about to change as satellites promise features that cannot compete with terrestrial networks, resulting in the integration of UAVs with satellite communications. However, things are unclear, and the risks posed either from the point of view of personal data or from safety and health can act as an obstacle in developing and upgrading communications

With impending reform in telecommunications laws, the Authors argue that an important first step is the creation of a bipartisan, independent commission to examine and recommend implementation of more market-oriented communications policy. Through maximizing the operation of the markets, the authors argue that communications policy will better serve its goals of increasing business productivity and consumer welfare through the better services and lower prices. Important steps to achieve optimal market operation include deregulating retail prices where multifirm competition is available, minimizing the cost of public property inputs, overhauling universal service, assigning greater jurisdictional authority to federal regulators, and significantly reorganizing the FCC. The Authors argue that the timely implementation of these policies is crucial for achieving United States telecommunications policy goals
