    Universal fractional-order design of linear phase lead compensation multirate repetitive control for PWM inverters

    Repetitive control (RC) with linear phase lead compensation provides a simple but very effective control solution for any periodic signal with a known period. Multirate repetitive control (MRC) with a downsampling rate can reduce the need of memory size and computational cost, and then leads to a more feasible design of the plug-in repetitive control systems in practical applications. However, with fixed sampling rate, both MRC and its linear phase lead compensator are sensitive to the ratio of the sampling frequency to the frequency of interested periodic signals: (1) MRC might fails to exactly compensate the periodic signal in the case of a fractional ratio; (2) linear phase lead compensation might fail to enable MRC to achieve satisfactory performance in the case of a low ratio. In this paper, a universal fractional-order design of linear phase lead compensation MRC is proposed to tackle periodic signals with high accuracy, fast dynamic response, good robustness, and cost-effective implementation regardless of the frequency ratio, which offers a unified framework for housing various RC schemes in extensive engineering application. An application example of programmable AC power supply is explored to comprehensively testify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme

    A time lag study of the vertical motion simulator computer system

    A study was performed to evaluate an experimental method to determine time lags in real-time computer systems as the one associated with the Vertical Motion Simulator at Ames Research Center. The approach was to use an ordinary frequency analyzer to measure the phase difference between inputs and outputs of the computer system. The various elements of the program and computational architecture were modeled. Various factors, such as computer frame time and input frequency, were varied so that they were representative of the operational use of the simulator facilities. Experimentally determined results were compared with predictions derived from the simulation models. The results indicate that the frequency analyzer can be readily used to evaluate time lags in systems of this type. Differences between predicted and measured phase values indicate that the hardware and software imparts a time lag of about 5 msec to this facility

    Adaptive and Online Health Monitoring System for Autonomous Aircraft

    Good situation awareness is one of the key attributes required to maintain safe flight, especially for an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). Good situation awareness can be achieved by incorporating an Adaptive Health Monitoring System (AHMS) to the aircraft. The AHMS monitors the flight outcome or flight behaviours of the aircraft based on its external environmental conditions and the behaviour of its internal systems. The AHMS does this by associating a health value to the aircraft's behaviour based on the progression of its sensory values produced by the aircraft's modules, components and/or subsystems. The AHMS indicates erroneous flight behaviour when a deviation to this health information is produced. This will be useful for a UAS because the pilot is taken out of the control loop and is unaware of how the environment and/or faults are affecting the behaviour of the aircraft. The autonomous pilot can use this health information to help produce safer and securer flight behaviour or fault tolerance to the aircraft. This allows the aircraft to fly safely in whatever the environmental conditions. This health information can also be used to help increase the endurance of the aircraft.     Ground‐based measurements of NOx and total reactive oxidized nitrogen (NOy) at Sable Island, Nova Scotia, during the NARE 1993 summer intensive

    Measurements of NO, NO2, and total reactive oxidized nitrogen (NOy) were added to ongoing measurements of aerosols, CO, and O3 at Sable Island (43°55′N, 60°01′W), Nova Scotia, during the North Atlantic Regional Experiment (NARE) 1993 summer intensive. Ambient levels of NOx and NOy were found to be highly variable, and elevated levels can be attributed to the transport of polluted continental air or presumably to relatively fresh emissions from sources upwind (e.g., ship traffic). The median values for NOx and NOy are 98 and 266 parts per trillion by volume (pptv), respectively. A multiday pollution episode occurred during which elevated NOx and NOy were observed with enhanced levels of O3, CO, and condensation nuclei. Air masses of recent tropical marine origin characterized by low and constant levels of O3 and CO were sampled after Hurricane Emily. The correlation between ozone and CO is reasonably good, although the relation is driven by the single pollution episode observed during the study. The correlation of O3 with NOy and with NOy‐NOx is complicated by the presumed NOy removal processes in the marine boundary layer. Examination of the radiosonde data and comparisons of the surface data with those obtained on the overflying aircraft provide clear indications of vertical stratification above the site
