    The antibacterial action of microcin J25: evidence for disruption of cytoplasmic membrane energization in Salmonella newport

    Microcin J25 (MccJ25) is a cyclic peptide of 21 unmodified amino acid residues produced by a fecal strain of Escherichia coli. It has previously been shown that the antibiotic activity of this peptide is mainly directed to Enterobacteriaceae, including several pathogenic E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella strains. In this paper we show that MccJ25 acts on the cytoplasmic membrane of Salmonella newport cells producing alteration of membrane permeability, and the subsequent gradient dissipation, that initiate the inhibition of process, such as oxygen consumption. These results, taken together with our in vitro observations [Rintoul et al. (2000) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1509, 65–72], strongly suggest that the disruption of the cytoplasmic membrane gradient is closely related to the bactericidal activity of MccJ25 in S. newport.Fil: Rintoul, Maria Regina.     What a Difference a DV Makes ... The Impact of Conceptualizing the Dependent Variable in Innovation Success Factor Studies

    The quest for the "success factors" that drive a company's innovation performance has attracted a great deal of attention among both practitioners and academics. The underlying assumption is that certain critical activities impact the innovation performance of the company or the project. However, the findings of success factor studies lack convergence. It has been speculated that this may be due to the fact that extant studies have used many different measures of the dependent variable "innovation performance". Our study is the first to analyze this issue systematically and empirically: we analyze the extent to which different conceptualizations of the dependent variable (a firm's innovation performance) lead to different innovation success factor patterns. In order to do so, we collected data from 234 German firms, including well-established success factors and six alternative measures of innovation performance. This allowed us to calculate whether or not success factors are robust to changes in the measurement of the dependent variable. We find that this is not the case: rather, the choice of the dependent variable makes a huge difference. From this, we draw important conclusions for future studies aiming to identify the success factors in companies' innovation performance

    This research aimed to describethe handling of street children through shelter Rumah Kasih Serambi Salomo. The method usedis descriptive methodwith qualitative approach. Data collection techniqueswere interviews, observation and documentation. The focus in this study raised about thestreet children have become beggars and handlers provided by the shelter Rumah Kasih Serambi Salomo. The results showed that treatment of street children through Compassion House shelter has a program that Solomon\u27s Porch Child Social Welfare Program where the program is to reach street children who dropped out of school in order to still be able to continue their education by providing assistance school supplies for the school as well as expected welfare is assured. The condition of street children drop out of school before ever scouted and became beggars and after being scouted is no longer a beggar and stay in school. The model used in the treatment of street children in shelter homes Rumah Kasih Serambi Salomo that is the model of street-based companion visiting locations where street children live

    Designing a Blockchain Model for the Paris Agreement’s Carbon Market Mechanism

    This paper examines the benefits and constraints of applying blockchain technology for the Paris Agreement carbon market mechanism and develops a list of technical requirements and soft factors as selection criteria to test the feasibility of two different blockchain platforms. The carbon market mechanism, as outlined in Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, can accelerate climate action by enabling cooperation between national Parties. However, in the past, carbon markets were limited by several constraints. Our research investigates these constraints and translates them into selection criteria to design a blockchain platform to overcome these past limitations. The developed selection criteria and assumptions developed in this paper provide an orientation for blockchain assessments. Using the selection criteria, we examine the feasibility of two distinct blockchains, Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric, for the specific use case of Article 6.2. These two blockchain systems represent contrary forms of design and governance; Ethereum constitutes a public and permissionless blockchain governance system, while Hyperledger Fabric represents a private and permissioned governance system. Our results show that both blockchain systems can address present carbon market constraints by enhancing market transparency, increasing process automation, and preventing double counting. The final selection and blockchain system implementation will first be possible, when the Article 6 negotiations are concluded, and governance preferences of national Parties are established. Our paper informs about the viability of different blockchain systems, offers insights into governance options, and provides a valuable framework for a concrete blockchain selection in the future.DFG, 414044773, Open Access Publizieren 2019 - 2020 / Technische Universität Berli
