Towards an aspect weaving BPEL engine
This position paper proposes the use of dynamic aspects and
the visitor design pattern to obtain a highly configurable and
extensible BPEL engine. Using these two techniques, the
core of this infrastructural software can be customised to
meet new requirements and add features such as debugging,
execution monitoring, or changing to another Web Service
selection policy. Additionally, it can easily be extended to
cope with customer-specific BPEL extensions. We propose
the use of dynamic aspects not only on the engine itself
but also on the workflow in order to tackle the problems of
Web Service hot deployment and hot fixes to long running
processes. In this way, composing aWeb Service "on-the-fly"
means weaving its choreography interface into the workflow
Efficient Dynamic Access Analysis Using JavaScript Proxies
JSConTest introduced the notions of effect monitoring and dynamic effect
inference for JavaScript. It enables the description of effects with path
specifications resembling regular expressions. It is implemented by an offline
source code transformation.
To overcome the limitations of the JSConTest implementation, we redesigned
and reimplemented effect monitoring by taking advantange of JavaScript proxies.
Our new design avoids all drawbacks of the prior implementation. It guarantees
full interposition; it is not restricted to a subset of JavaScript; it is
self-maintaining; and its scalability to large programs is significantly better
than with JSConTest.
The improved scalability has two sources. First, the reimplementation is
significantly faster than the original, transformation-based implementation.
Second, the reimplementation relies on the fly-weight pattern and on trace
reduction to conserve memory. Only the combination of these techniques enables

The C Object System: Using C as a High-Level Object-Oriented Language
The C Object System (Cos) is a small C library which implements high-level
concepts available in Clos, Objc and other object-oriented programming
languages: uniform object model (class, meta-class and property-metaclass),
generic functions, multi-methods, delegation, properties, exceptions, contracts
and closures. Cos relies on the programmable capabilities of the C programming
language to extend its syntax and to implement the aforementioned concepts as
first-class objects. Cos aims at satisfying several general principles like
simplicity, extensibility, reusability, efficiency and portability which are
rarely met in a single programming language. Its design is tuned to provide
efficient and portable implementation of message multi-dispatch and message
multi-forwarding which are the heart of code extensibility and reusability.
With COS features in hand, software should become as flexible and extensible as
with scripting languages and as efficient and portable as expected with C

Run-time Variability with First-class Contexts
Software must be regularly updated to keep up with changing requirements. Unfortunately, to install an update, the system must usually be restarted, which is inconvenient and costly. In this dissertation, we aim at overcoming the need for restart by enabling run-time changes at the programming language level. We argue that the best way to achieve this goal is to improve the support for encapsulation, information hiding and late binding by contextualizing behavior. In our approach, behavioral variations are encapsulated into context objects that alter the behavior of other objects locally. We present three contextual language features that demonstrate our approach. First, we present a feature to evolve software by scoping variations to threads. This way, arbitrary objects can be substituted over time without compromising safety. Second, we present a variant of dynamic proxies that operate by delegation instead of forwarding. The proxies can be used as building blocks to implement contextualization mechanisms from within the language. Third, we contextualize the behavior of objects to intercept exchanges of references between objects. This approach scales information hiding from objects to aggregates. The three language features are supported by formalizations and case studies, showing their soundness and practicality. With these three complementary language features, developers can easily design applications that can accommodate run-time changes
Extensible modeling with managed data in Java
Many model-driven development (MDD) tools employ specialized frameworks and modeling languages, and assume that the semantics of models is provided by some form of code generation. As a result, programming against models is cumbersome and does not integrate well with ordinary programming languages and IDEs. In this paper we present MD4J, a modeling approach for embedding metamodels directly in Java, using plain interfaces and annotations. The semantics is provided by data managers that create and manipulate models. This architecture enables two kinds of extensibility. First, the data managers can be changed or extended to obtain different base semantics of a model. This allows a kind of aspect-oriented programming. Second, the metamodels themselves can be extended with additional fields and methods to modularly enrich a modeling language.
