    Self-Supervised Shape and Appearance Modeling via Neural Differentiable Graphics

    Inferring 3D shape and appearance from natural images is a fundamental challenge in computer vision. Despite recent progress using deep learning methods, a key limitation is the availability of annotated training data, as acquisition is often very challenging and expensive, especially at a large scale. This thesis proposes to incorporate physical priors into neural networks that allow for self-supervised learning. As a result, easy-to-access unlabeled data can be used for model training. In particular, novel algorithms in the context of 3D reconstruction and texture/material synthesis are introduced, where only image data is available as supervisory signal. First, a method that learns to reason about 3D shape and appearance solely from unstructured 2D images, achieved via differentiable rendering in an adversarial fashion, is proposed. As shown next, learning from videos significantly improves 3D reconstruction quality. To this end, a novel ray-conditioned warp embedding is proposed that aggregates pixel-wise features from multiple source images. Addressing the challenging task of disentangling shape and appearance, first a method that enables 3D texture synthesis independent of shape or resolution is presented. For this purpose, 3D noise fields of different scales are transformed into stationary textures. The method is able to produce 3D textures, despite only requiring 2D textures for training. Lastly, the surface characteristics of textures under different illumination conditions are modeled in the form of material parameters. Therefore, a self-supervised approach is proposed that has no access to material parameters but only flash images. Similar to the previous method, random noise fields are reshaped to material parameters, which are conditioned to replicate the visual appearance of the input under matching light

    Stanford-ORB: A Real-World 3D Object Inverse Rendering Benchmark

    We introduce Stanford-ORB, a new real-world 3D Object inverse Rendering Benchmark. Recent advances in inverse rendering have enabled a wide range of real-world applications in 3D content generation, moving rapidly from research and commercial use cases to consumer devices. While the results continue to improve, there is no real-world benchmark that can quantitatively assess and compare the performance of various inverse rendering methods. Existing real-world datasets typically only consist of the shape and multi-view images of objects, which are not sufficient for evaluating the quality of material recovery and object relighting. Methods capable of recovering material and lighting often resort to synthetic data for quantitative evaluation, which on the other hand does not guarantee generalization to complex real-world environments. We introduce a new dataset of real-world objects captured under a variety of natural scenes with ground-truth 3D scans, multi-view images, and environment lighting. Using this dataset, we establish the first comprehensive real-world evaluation benchmark for object inverse rendering tasks from in-the-wild scenes, and compare the performance of various existing methods.Comment: NeurIPS 2023 Datasets and Benchmarks Track.     Surface Appearance Estimation from Video Sequences

    The realistic virtual reproduction of real world objects using Computer Graphics techniques requires the accurate acquisition and reconstruction of both 3D geometry and surface appearance. Unfortunately, in several application contexts, such as Cultural Heritage (CH), the reflectance acquisition can be very challenging due to the type of object to acquire and the digitization conditions. Although several methods have been proposed for the acquisition of object reflectance, some intrinsic limitations still make its acquisition a complex task for CH artworks: the use of specialized instruments (dome, special setup for camera and light source, etc.); the need of highly controlled acquisition environments, such as a dark room; the difficulty to extend to objects of arbitrary shape and size; the high level of expertise required to assess the quality of the acquisition. The Ph.D. thesis proposes novel solutions for the acquisition and the estimation of the surface appearance in fixed and uncontrolled lighting conditions with several degree of approximations (from a perceived near diffuse color to a SVBRDF), taking advantage of the main features that differentiate a video sequences from an unordered photos collections: the temporal coherence; the data redundancy; the easy of the acquisition, which allows acquisition of many views of the object in a short time. Finally, Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is an example of widely used technology for the acquisition of the surface appearance in the CH field, even if limited to single view Reflectance Fields of nearly flat objects. In this context, the thesis addresses also two important issues in RTI usage: how to provide better and more flexible virtual inspection capabilities with a set of operators that improve the perception of details, features and overall shape of the artwork; how to increase the possibility to disseminate this data and to support remote visual inspection of both scholar and ordinary public

    MAIR: Multi-view Attention Inverse Rendering with 3D Spatially-Varying Lighting Estimation

    We propose a scene-level inverse rendering framework that uses multi-view images to decompose the scene into geometry, a SVBRDF, and 3D spatially-varying lighting. Because multi-view images provide a variety of information about the scene, multi-view images in object-level inverse rendering have been taken for granted. However, owing to the absence of multi-view HDR synthetic dataset, scene-level inverse rendering has mainly been studied using single-view image. We were able to successfully perform scene-level inverse rendering using multi-view images by expanding OpenRooms dataset and designing efficient pipelines to handle multi-view images, and splitting spatially-varying lighting. Our experiments show that the proposed method not only achieves better performance than single-view-based methods, but also achieves robust performance on unseen real-world scene. Also, our sophisticated 3D spatially-varying lighting volume allows for photorealistic object insertion in any 3D location.Comment: Accepted by CVPR 2023; Project Page is https://bring728.github.io/mair.project

    Flexible SVBRDF Capture with a Multi-Image Deep Network

    International audienceEmpowered by deep learning, recent methods for material capture can estimate a spatially-varying reflectance from a single photograph. Such lightweight capture is in stark contrast with the tens or hundreds of pictures required by traditional optimization-based approaches. However, a single image is often simply not enough to observe the rich appearance of real-world materials. We present a deep-learning method capable of estimating material appearance from a variable number of uncalibrated and unordered pictures captured with a handheld camera and flash. Thanks to an order-independent fusing layer, this architecture extracts the most useful information from each picture, while benefiting from strong priors learned from data. The method can handle both view and light direction variation without calibration. We show how our method improves its prediction with the number of input pictures, and reaches high quality reconstructions with as little as 1 to 10 images-a sweet spot between existing single-image and complex multi-image approaches

    Neural Reflectance Decomposition

    Die Erstellung von fotorealistischen Modellen von Objekten aus Bildern oder Bildersammlungen ist eine grundlegende Herausforderung in der Computer Vision und Grafik. Dieses Problem wird auch als inverses Rendering bezeichnet. Eine der grĂ¶ĂŸten Herausforderungen bei dieser Aufgabe ist die vielfĂ€ltige AmbiguitĂ€t. Der Prozess Bilder aus 3D-Objekten zu erzeugen wird Rendering genannt. Allerdings beeinflussen sich mehrere Eigenschaften wie Form, Beleuchtung und die ReflektivitĂ€t der OberflĂ€che gegenseitig. ZusĂ€tzlich wird eine Integration dieser EinflĂŒsse durchgefĂŒhrt, um das endgĂŒltige Bild zu erzeugen. Die Umkehrung dieser integrierten AbhĂ€ngigkeiten ist eine Ă€ußerst schwierige und mehrdeutige Aufgabenstellung. Die Lösung dieser Aufgabe ist jedoch von entscheidender Bedeutung, da die automatisierte Erstellung solcher wieder beleuchtbaren Objekte verschiedene Anwendungen in den Bereichen Online-Shopping, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Spiele oder Filme hat. In dieser Arbeit werden zwei AnsĂ€tze zur Lösung dieser Aufgabe beschrieben. Erstens wird eine Netzwerkarchitektur vorgestellt, die die Erfassung eines Objekts und dessen Materialien von zwei Aufnahmen ermöglicht. Der Grad der Blicksynthese von diesen Objekten ist jedoch begrenzt, da bei der Dekomposition nur eine einzige Perspektive verwendet wird. Daher wird eine zweite Reihe von AnsĂ€tzen vorgeschlagen, bei denen eine Sammlung von 360 Grad verteilten Bildern in die Form, Reflektanz und Beleuchtung gespalten werden. Diese Multi-View-Bilder werden pro Objekt optimiert. Das resultierende Objekt kann direkt in handelsĂŒblicher Rendering-Software oder in Spielen verwendet werden. Wir erreichen dies, indem wir die aktuelle Forschung zu neuronalen Feldern erweitern Reflektanz zu speichern. Durch den Einsatz von Volumen-Rendering-Techniken können wir ein Reflektanzfeld aus natĂŒrlichen Bildsammlungen ohne jegliche Ground Truth (GT) Überwachung optimieren. Die von uns vorgeschlagenen Methoden erreichen eine erstklassige QualitĂ€t der Dekomposition und ermöglichen neuartige Aufnahmesituationen, in denen sich Objekte unter verschiedenen Beleuchtungsbedingungen oder an verschiedenen Orten befinden können, was ĂŒblich fĂŒr Online-Bildsammlungen ist.Creating relightable objects from images or collections is a fundamental challenge in computer vision and graphics. This problem is also known as inverse rendering. One of the main challenges in this task is the high ambiguity. The creation of images from 3D objects is well defined as rendering. However, multiple properties such as shape, illumination, and surface reflectiveness influence each other. Additionally, an integration of these influences is performed to form the final image. Reversing these integrated dependencies is highly ill-posed and ambiguous. However, solving the task is essential, as automated creation of relightable objects has various applications in online shopping, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), games, or movies. In this thesis, we propose two approaches to solve this task. First, a network architecture is discussed, which generalizes the decomposition of a two-shot capture of an object from large training datasets. The degree of novel view synthesis is limited as only a singular perspective is used in the decomposition. Therefore, the second set of approaches is proposed, which decomposes a set of 360-degree images. These multi-view images are optimized per object, and the result can be directly used in standard rendering software or games. We achieve this by extending recent research on Neural Fields, which can store information in a 3D neural volume. Leveraging volume rendering techniques, we can optimize a reflectance field from in-the-wild image collections without any ground truth (GT) supervision. Our proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art decomposition quality and enable novel capture setups where objects can be under varying illumination or in different locations, which is typical for online image collections

    BRDF representation and acquisition

    Photorealistic rendering of real world environments is important in a range of different areas; including Visual Special effects, Interior/Exterior Modelling, Architectural Modelling, Cultural Heritage, Computer Games and Automotive Design. Currently, rendering systems are able to produce photorealistic simulations of the appearance of many real-world materials. In the real world, viewer perception of objects depends on the lighting and object/material/surface characteristics, the way a surface interacts with the light and on how the light is reflected, scattered, absorbed by the surface and the impact these characteristics have on material appearance. In order to re-produce this, it is necessary to understand how materials interact with light. Thus the representation and acquisition of material models has become such an active research area. This survey of the state-of-the-art of BRDF Representation and Acquisition presents an overview of BRDF (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function) models used to represent surface/material reflection characteristics, and describes current acquisition methods for the capture and rendering of photorealistic materials
