    A Novel Device-to-Device Discovery Scheme for Underlay Cellular Networks

    Tremendous growing demand for high data rate services such as video, gaming and social networking in wireless cellular systems, attracted researchers' attention to focus on developing proximity services. In this regard, device-to-device (D2D) communications as a promising technology for future cellular systems, plays crucial rule. The key factor in D2D communication is providing efficient peer discovery mechanisms in ultra dense networks. In this paper, we propose a centralized D2D discovery scheme by employing a signaling algorithm to exchange D2D discovery messages between network entities. In this system, potential D2D pairs share uplink cellular users' resources with collision detection, to initiate a D2D links. Stochastic geometry is used to analyze system performance in terms of success probability of the transmitted signal and minimum required time slots for the proposed discovery scheme.     Improved Handover Through Dual Connectivity in 5G mmWave Mobile Networks

    The millimeter wave (mmWave) bands offer the possibility of orders of magnitude greater throughput for fifth generation (5G) cellular systems. However, since mmWave signals are highly susceptible to blockage, channel quality on any one mmWave link can be extremely intermittent. This paper implements a novel dual connectivity protocol that enables mobile user equipment (UE) devices to maintain physical layer connections to 4G and 5G cells simultaneously. A novel uplink control signaling system combined with a local coordinator enables rapid path switching in the event of failures on any one link. This paper provides the first comprehensive end-to-end evaluation of handover mechanisms in mmWave cellular systems. The simulation framework includes detailed measurement-based channel models to realistically capture spatial dynamics of blocking events, as well as the full details of MAC, RLC and transport protocols.     Separation Framework: An Enabler for Cooperative and D2D Communication for Future 5G Networks

    Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management, burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density. Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture (SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC. More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D.     Massive MIMO for Internet of Things (IoT) Connectivity

    Massive MIMO is considered to be one of the key technologies in the emerging 5G systems, but also a concept applicable to other wireless systems. Exploiting the large number of degrees of freedom (DoFs) of massive MIMO essential for achieving high spectral efficiency, high data rates and extreme spatial multiplexing of densely distributed users. On the one hand, the benefits of applying massive MIMO for broadband communication are well known and there has been a large body of research on designing communication schemes to support high rates. On the other hand, using massive MIMO for Internet-of-Things (IoT) is still a developing topic, as IoT connectivity has requirements and constraints that are significantly different from the broadband connections. In this paper we investigate the applicability of massive MIMO to IoT connectivity. Specifically, we treat the two generic types of IoT connections envisioned in 5G: massive machine-type communication (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). This paper fills this important gap by identifying the opportunities and challenges in exploiting massive MIMO for IoT connectivity. We provide insights into the trade-offs that emerge when massive MIMO is applied to mMTC or URLLC and present a number of suitable communication schemes. The discussion continues to the questions of network slicing of the wireless resources and the use of massive MIMO to simultaneously support IoT connections with very heterogeneous requirements. The main conclusion is that massive MIMO can bring benefits to the scenarios with IoT connectivity, but it requires tight integration of the physical-layer techniques with the protocol design.Comment: Submitted for publicatio

    Real-Time Localization Using Software Defined Radio

    Service providers make use of cost-effective wireless solutions to identify, localize, and possibly track users using their carried MDs to support added services, such as geo-advertisement, security, and management. Indoor and outdoor hotspot areas play a significant role for such services. However, GPS does not work in many of these areas. To solve this problem, service providers leverage available indoor radio technologies, such as WiFi, GSM, and LTE, to identify and localize users. We focus our research on passive services provided by third parties, which are responsible for (i) data acquisition and (ii) processing, and network-based services, where (i) and (ii) are done inside the serving network. For better understanding of parameters that affect indoor localization, we investigate several factors that affect indoor signal propagation for both Bluetooth and WiFi technologies. For GSM-based passive services, we developed first a data acquisition module: a GSM receiver that can overhear GSM uplink messages transmitted by MDs while being invisible. A set of optimizations were made for the receiver components to support wideband capturing of the GSM spectrum while operating in real-time. Processing the wide-spectrum of the GSM is possible using a proposed distributed processing approach over an IP network. Then, to overcome the lack of information about tracked devices’ radio settings, we developed two novel localization algorithms that rely on proximity-based solutions to estimate in real environments devices’ locations. Given the challenging indoor environment on radio signals, such as NLOS reception and multipath propagation, we developed an original algorithm to detect and remove contaminated radio signals before being fed to the localization algorithm. To improve the localization algorithm, we extended our work with a hybrid based approach that uses both WiFi and GSM interfaces to localize users. For network-based services, we used a software implementation of a LTE base station to develop our algorithms, which characterize the indoor environment before applying the localization algorithm. Experiments were conducted without any special hardware, any prior knowledge of the indoor layout or any offline calibration of the system

    Multi-user MIMO beamforming:implementation, verification in L1 capacity, and performance testing

    Abstract. A certain piece of technology takes a lot of effort, research, and testing to reach the productisation phase. Radio features are implemented in layer 1 (L1) before moving to the hardware implementation phase, where their functioning is tested and verified. The target of the thesis is to implement and verify beamforming based multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) in L1 capacity and performance testing (PET) environment. The L1 testing environment mainly focuses on 4G and 5G stand-alone (SA) cases, while the focus of this thesis work is only on 5G SA technology, which features beamforming and MU-MIMO. Beamforming and MU-MIMO have been tested in an end-to-end system but not specifically in L1. The L1 testing provides a deeper analysis of beamforming and MU-MIMO in L1 and aids in problem identification at an early productisation phase, saving both time and money. L1 PET has multiple components that work together for L1 data transmission in both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) directions and handle the verification of the transmitted data. The main components that play a key role in the implementation of multi-user MIMO beamforming concern frame design setup, message setup for UL and DL using correct channels and interfaces, transmission of the generated data in UL and DL, and message capturing at L1 end (whether correct messages are transmitted or not). For verification purposes, methods such as analysing plots from L1 log results based on comparison with radio specifications are used to determine whether the generated test output is correct or not. Finally, performance metrics, such as error vector magnitude (EVM), UE per transmission time interval (TTI), number of layers per UE, channel quality indicator (CQI), physical resource block (PRB) count, and throughput, are evaluated to assess the capacity and performance correctness of the implemented test setup

    Spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for next-generation wireless communication systems

    The data traffic in cellular networks has had and will experience a rapid exponential rise. Therefore, it is essential to innovate a new cellular architecture with advanced wireless technologies that can offer more capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency to manage the exponential data traffic growth. Managing such mass data traffic, however, brings up another challenge of increasing energy consumption. This is because it contributes into a growing fraction of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission which is a global concern today due to its negative impact on the environment. This has resulted in creating a new paradigm shift towards both spectral and energy efficient orientated design for the next-generation wireless access networks. Acquiring both improved energy efficiency and spectral efficiency has, nonetheless, shown to be a difficult goal to achieve as it seems improving one is at the detriment to the other. Therefore, the trade-off between the spectral and energy efficiency is of paramount importance to assess the energy consumption in a wireless communication system required to attain a specific spectral efficiency. This thesis looks into this problem. It studies the spectral-energy efficiency tradeoff for some of the emerging wireless communication technologies which are seen as potential candidates for the fifth generation (5G) mobile cellular system. The focus is on the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), mobile femtocell (MFemtocell), cognitive radio (CR), and the spatial modulation (SM). Firstly, the energy-efficient resource allocation scheme for multi-user OFDMA (MU-OFDMA) system is studied. The spectral-energy efficiency trade-off is analysed under the constraint of maintaining the fairness among users. The energy-efficient optimisation problem has been formulated as integer fractional programming. We then apply an iterative method to simplify the problem to an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. Secondly, the spectral and energy efficiency for a cellular system with MFemtocell deployment is investigated using different resource partitioning schemes. Femtocells are low range, low power base stations (BSs) that improve the coverage inside a home or office building. MFemtocell adopts the femtocell solution to be deployed in public transport and emergency vehicles. Closed-form expressions for the relationships between the spectral and energy efficiency are derived for a single-user (SU) MFemtocell network. We also study the spectral efficiency for MU-MFemtocells with two opportunistic scheduling schemes. Thirdly, the spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for CR networks is analysed at both SU and MU CR systems against varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. CR is an innovative radio device that aims to utilise the spectrum more efficiently by opportunistically exploiting underutilised licensed spectrum. For the SU system, we study the required energy to achieve a specific spectral efficiency for a CR channel under two different types of power constraints in different fading environments. In this scenario, interference constraint at the primary receiver (PR) is also considered to protect the PR from harmful interference. At the system level, we study the spectral and energy efficiency for a CR network that shares the spectrum with an indoor network. Adopting the extreme-value theory, we are able to derive the average spectral efficiency of the CR network. Finally, we propose two innovative schemes to enhance the capability of (SM). SM is a recently developed technique that is employed for a low complexity multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. The first scheme can be applied for SU MIMO (SU-MIMO) to offer more degrees of freedom than SM. Whereas the second scheme introduces a transmission structure by which the SM is adopted into a downlink MU-MIMO system. Unlike SM, both proposed schemes do not involve any restriction into the number of transmit antennas when transmitting signals. The spectral-energy efficiency trade-off for the MU-SM in the massive MIMO system is studied. In this context, we develop an iterative energy-efficient water-filling algorithm to optimises the transmit power and achieve the maximum energy efficiency for a given spectral efficiency. In summary, the research presented in this thesis reveals mathematical tools to analysis the spectral and energy efficiency for wireless communications technologies. It also offers insight to solve optimisation problems that belong to a class of problems with objectives of enhancing the energy efficiency

    Towards the Internet of Smart Trains: A Review on Industrial IoT-Connected Railways

    [Abstract] Nowadays, the railway industry is in a position where it is able to exploit the opportunities created by the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and enabling communication technologies under the paradigm of Internet of Trains. This review details the evolution of communication technologies since the deployment of GSM-R, describing the main alternatives and how railway requirements, specifications and recommendations have evolved over time. The advantages of the latest generation of broadband communication systems (e.g., LTE, 5G, IEEE 802.11ad) and the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the railway environment are also explained together with the strategic roadmap to ensure a smooth migration from GSM-R. Furthermore, this survey focuses on providing a holistic approach, identifying scenarios and architectures where railways could leverage better commercial IIoT capabilities. After reviewing the main industrial developments, short and medium-term IIoT-enabled services for smart railways are evaluated. Then, it is analyzed the latest research on predictive maintenance, smart infrastructure, advanced monitoring of assets, video surveillance systems, railway operations, Passenger and Freight Information Systems (PIS/FIS), train control systems, safety assurance, signaling systems, cyber security and energy efficiency. Overall, it can be stated that the aim of this article is to provide a detailed examination of the state-of-the-art of different technologies and services that will revolutionize the railway industry and will allow for confronting today challenges.Galicia.
