A Taxonomy of Data Grids for Distributed Data Sharing, Management and Processing

Data Grids have been adopted as the platform for scientific communities that need to share, access, transport, process and manage large data collections distributed worldwide. They combine high-end computing technologies with high-performance networking and wide-area storage management techniques. In this paper, we discuss the key concepts behind Data Grids and compare them with other data sharing and distribution paradigms such as content delivery networks, peer-to-peer networks and distributed databases. We then provide comprehensive taxonomies that cover various aspects of architecture, data transportation, data replication and resource allocation and scheduling. Finally, we map the proposed taxonomy to various Data Grid systems not only to validate the taxonomy but also to identify areas for future exploration. Through this taxonomy, we aim to categorise existing systems to better understand their goals and their methodology. This would help evaluate their applicability for solving similar problems. This taxonomy also provides a "gap analysis" of this area through which researchers can potentially identify new issues for investigation. Finally, we hope that the proposed taxonomy and mapping also helps to provide an easy way for new practitioners to understand this complex area of research.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Technical Repor

Learning Fault-tolerant Speech Parsing with SCREEN

    Get PDF
This paper describes a new approach and a system SCREEN for fault-tolerant speech parsing. SCREEEN stands for Symbolic Connectionist Robust EnterprisE for Natural language. Speech parsing describes the syntactic and semantic analysis of spontaneous spoken language. The general approach is based on incremental immediate flat analysis, learning of syntactic and semantic speech parsing, parallel integration of current hypotheses, and the consideration of various forms of speech related errors. The goal for this approach is to explore the parallel interactions between various knowledge sources for learning incremental fault-tolerant speech parsing. This approach is examined in a system SCREEN using various hybrid connectionist techniques. Hybrid connectionist techniques are examined because of their promising properties of inherent fault tolerance, learning, gradedness and parallel constraint integration. The input for SCREEN is hypotheses about recognized words of a spoken utterance potentially analyzed by a speech system, the output is hypotheses about the flat syntactic and semantic analysis of the utterance. In this paper we focus on the general approach, the overall architecture, and examples for learning flat syntactic speech parsing. Different from most other speech language architectures SCREEN emphasizes an interactive rather than an autonomous position, learning rather than encoding, flat analysis rather than in-depth analysis, and fault-tolerant processing of phonetic, syntactic and semantic knowledge.Comment: 6 pages, postscript, compressed, uuencoded to appear in Proceedings of AAAI 9

The apotropaic and prophylactic in the Artemision of Thassos: a contextual interpretation of the black-figure pottery from the Archaic period

This paper is centered on Thassos, an island situated in the Northern Aegean, settled by Greeks from Paros. We focus on the Archaic Period, more specifically on the sixth century BC, the peak of local production. Departing from the archaeological contexts through excavation reports, we analyze significant social and religious connections among votive materials associated with the Thasian black-figure pottery. These connections brought us elements that allowed us to interpret the multiculturalism imbricated within the objects, the mimicry and the innovations in the decoration of this black-figure pottery, as well as the particular demand in quantitative terms of a type of vessel called lekane, an object that was loaded with information and religious and apotropaic meaning. In addition, those same elements also showed us traits that reveal votive practices, judging by the way the pottery was exhibited, and its decorative features, which to date are only attested in Thassos. The research revealed intrinsic relationships linked to the various facets of Artemis, the protection of women in childbirth, revealed through the analysis of the objects in context

Automatically generated summaries of sports videos based on semantic content

The sport has been a part of our lives since the beginning of times, whether we are spectators or participants. The diffusion and increase of multimedia platforms made the consumption of these contents available to everyone. Sports videos appeal to a large population all around the world and have become an important form of multimedia content that is streamed over the Internet and television networks. Moreover, sport content creators want to provide the users with relevant information such as live commentary, summarization of the games in form of text or video using automatic tools. As a result, MOG-Technologies wants to create a tool capable of summarizing football matches based on semantic content, and this problem was explored in the scope of this Dissertation. The main objective is to convert the television football commentator's speech into text taking advantage of Google's Speech-to-Text tool. Several machine learning models were then tested to classify sentences into important events. For the model training, a dataset was created, combining 43 games transcription from different television channels also from 72 games provided by Google Search timeline commentary, the combined dataset contains 3260 sentences. To validate the proposed solution the accuracy and f1 score were extracted for each machine learning model. The results show that the developed tool is capable of predicting events in live events, with low error rate. Also, combining multiple sources, not only the sport commentator speech, will help to increase the performance of the tool. It is important to notice that the dataset created during this Dissertation will allow MOG-Technologies to expand and perfect the concept discussed in this project
