    Conversational Arabic Automatic Speech Recognition

    Colloquial Arabic (CA) is the set of spoken variants of modern Arabic that exist in the form of regional dialects and are considered generally to be mother-tongues in those regions. CA has limited textual resource because it exists only as a spoken language and without a standardised written form. Normally the modern standard Arabic (MSA) writing convention is employed that has limitations in phonetically representing CA. Without phonetic dictionaries the pronunciation of CA words is ambiguous, and can only be obtained through word and/or sentence context. Moreover, CA inherits the MSA complex word structure where words can be created from attaching affixes to a word. In automatic speech recognition (ASR), commonly used approaches to model acoustic, pronunciation and word variability are language independent. However, one can observe significant differences in performance between English and CA, with the latter yielding up to three times higher error rates. This thesis investigates the main issues for the under-performance of CA ASR systems. The work focuses on two directions: first, the impact of limited lexical coverage, and insufficient training data for written CA on language modelling is investigated; second, obtaining better models for the acoustics and pronunciations by learning to transfer between written and spoken forms. Several original contributions result from each direction. Using data-driven classes from decomposed text are shown to reduce out-of-vocabulary rate. A novel colloquialisation system to import additional data is introduced; automatic diacritisation to restore the missing short vowels was found to yield good performance; and a new acoustic set for describing CA was defined. Using the proposed methods improved the ASR performance in terms of word error rate in a CA conversational telephone speech ASR task

    Two key assumptions shape the usual view of ranked retrieval: (1) that the searcher can choose words for their query that might appear in the documents that they wish to see, and (2) that ranking retrieved documents will suffice because the searcher will be able to recognize those which they wished to find. When the documents to be searched are in a language not known by the searcher, neither assumption is true. In such cases, Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is needed.     Streaming and Sketch Algorithms for Large Data NLP

    The availability of large and rich quantities of text data is due to the emergence of the World Wide Web, social media, and mobile devices. Such vast data sets have led to leaps in the performance of many statistically-based problems. Given a large magnitude of text data available, it is computationally prohibitive to train many complex Natural Language Processing (NLP) models on large data. This motivates the hypothesis that simple models trained on big data can outperform more complex models with small data. My dissertation provides a solution to effectively and efficiently exploit large data on many NLP applications. Datasets are growing at an exponential rate, much faster than increase in memory. To provide a memory-efficient solution for handling large datasets, this dissertation show limitations of existing streaming and sketch algorithms when applied to canonical NLP problems and proposes several new variants to overcome those shortcomings. Streaming and sketch algorithms process the large data sets in one pass and represent a large data set with a compact summary, much smaller than the full size of the input. These algorithms can easily be implemented in a distributed setting and provide a solution that is both memory- and time-efficient. However, the memory and time savings come at the expense of approximate solutions. In this dissertation, I demonstrate that approximate solutions achieved on large data are comparable to exact solutions on large data and outperform exact solutions on smaller data. I focus on many NLP problems that boil down to tracking many statistics, like storing approximate counts, computing approximate association scores like pointwise mutual information (PMI), finding frequent items (like n-grams), building streaming language models, and measuring distributional similarity. First, I introduce the concept of approximate streaming large-scale language models in NLP. Second, I present a novel variant of the Count-Min sketch that maintains approximate counts of all items. Third, I conduct a systematic study and compare many sketch algorithms that approximate count of items with focus on large-scale NLP tasks.     Evaluation of innovative computer-assisted transcription and translation strategies for video lecture repositories

    Nowadays, the technology enhanced learning area has experienced a strong growth with many new learning approaches like blended learning, flip teaching, massive open online courses, and open educational resources to complement face-to-face lectures. Specifically, video lectures are fast becoming an everyday educational resource in higher education for all of these new learning approaches, and they are being incorporated into existing university curricula around the world. Transcriptions and translations can improve the utility of these audiovisual assets, but rarely are present due to a lack of cost-effective solutions to do so. Lecture searchability, accessibility to people with impairments, translatability for foreign students, plagiarism detection, content recommendation, note-taking, and discovery of content-related videos are examples of advantages of the presence of transcriptions. For this reason, the aim of this thesis is to test in real-life case studies ways to obtain multilingual captions for video lectures in a cost-effective way by using state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition and machine translation techniques. Also, we explore interaction protocols to review these automatic transcriptions and translations, because unfortunately automatic subtitles are not error-free. In addition, we take a step further into multilingualism by extending our findings and evaluation to several languages. Finally, the outcomes of this thesis have been applied to thousands of video lectures in European universities and institutions.Hoy en día, el área del aprendizaje mejorado por la tecnología ha experimentado un fuerte crecimiento con muchos nuevos enfoques de aprendizaje como el aprendizaje combinado, la clase inversa, los cursos masivos abiertos en línea, y nuevos recursos educativos abiertos para complementar las clases presenciales. En concreto, los videos docentes se están convirtiendo rápidamente en un recurso educativo cotidiano en la educación superior para todos estos nuevos enfoques de aprendizaje, y se están incorporando a los planes de estudios universitarios existentes en todo el mundo. Las transcripciones y las traducciones pueden mejorar la utilidad de estos recursos audiovisuales, pero rara vez están presentes debido a la falta de soluciones rentables para hacerlo. La búsqueda de y en los videos, la accesibilidad a personas con impedimentos, la traducción para estudiantes extranjeros, la detección de plagios, la recomendación de contenido, la toma de notas y el descubrimiento de videos relacionados son ejemplos de las ventajas de la presencia de transcripciones. Por esta razón, el objetivo de esta tesis es probar en casos de estudio de la vida real las formas de obtener subtítulos multilingües para videos docentes de una manera rentable, mediante el uso de técnicas avanzadas de reconocimiento automático de voz y de traducción automática. Además, exploramos diferentes modelos de interacción para revisar estas transcripciones y traducciones automáticas, pues desafortunadamente los subtítulos automáticos no están libres de errores. Además, damos un paso más en el multilingüismo extendiendo nuestros hallazgos y evaluaciones a muchos idiomas. Por último, destacar que los resultados de esta tesis se han aplicado a miles de vídeos docentes en universidades e instituciones europeas.Hui en dia, l'àrea d'aprenentatge millorat per la tecnologia ha experimentat un fort creixement, amb molts nous enfocaments d'aprenentatge com l'aprenentatge combinat, la classe inversa, els cursos massius oberts en línia i nous recursos educatius oberts per tal de complementar les classes presencials. En concret, els vídeos docents s'estan convertint ràpidament en un recurs educatiu quotidià en l'educació superior per a tots aquests nous enfocaments d'aprenentatge i estan incorporant-se als plans d'estudi universitari existents arreu del món. Les transcripcions i les traduccions poden millorar la utilitat d'aquests recursos audiovisuals, però rara vegada estan presents a causa de la falta de solucions rendibles per fer-ho. La cerca de i als vídeos, l'accessibilitat a persones amb impediments, la traducció per estudiants estrangers, la detecció de plagi, la recomanació de contingut, la presa de notes i el descobriment de vídeos relacionats són un exemple dels avantatges de la presència de transcripcions. Per aquesta raó, l'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és provar en casos d'estudi de la vida real les formes d'obtenir subtítols multilingües per a vídeos docents d'una manera rendible, mitjançant l'ús de tècniques avançades de reconeixement automàtic de veu i de traducció automàtica. A més a més, s'exploren diferents models d'interacció per a revisar aquestes transcripcions i traduccions automàtiques, puix malauradament els subtítols automàtics no estan lliures d'errades. A més, es fa un pas més en el multilingüisme estenent els nostres descobriments i avaluacions a molts idiomes.     Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and NMT for Interlingual and Intralingual Communication: Speech to Text Technology for Live Subtitling and Accessibility.

    Considered the increasing demand for institutional translation and the multilingualism of international organizations, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in multilingual communications and for the purposes of accessibility has become an important element in the production of translation and interpreting services (Zetzsche, 2019). In particular, the widespread use of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Neural Machine Translation (NMT) technology represents a recent development in the attempt of satisfying the increasing demand for interinstitutional, multilingual communications at inter-governmental level (Maslias, 2017). Recently, researchers have been calling for a universalistic view of media and conference accessibility (Greco, 2016). The application of ASR, combined with NMT, may allow for the breaking down of communication barriers at European institutional conferences where multilingualism represents a fundamental pillar (Jopek Bosiacka, 2013). In addition to representing a so-called disruptive technology (Accipio Consulting, 2006), ASR technology may facilitate the communication with non-hearing users (Lewis, 2015). Thanks to ASR, it is possible to guarantee content accessibility for non-hearing audience via subtitles at institutionally-held conferences or speeches. Hence the need for analysing and evaluating ASR output: a quantitative approach is adopted to try to make an evaluation of subtitles, with the objective of assessing its accuracy (Romero-Fresco, 2011). A database of F.A.O.’s and other international institutions’ English-language speeches and conferences on climate change is taken into consideration. The statistical approach is based on WER and NER models (Romero-Fresco, 2016) and on an adapted version. The ASR software solution implemented into the study will be VoxSigma by Vocapia Research and Google Speech Recognition engine. After having defined a taxonomic scheme, Native and Non-Native subtitles are compared to gold standard transcriptions. The intralingual and interlingual output generated by NMT is specifically analysed and evaluated via the NTR model to evaluate accuracy and accessibility

    Phoneme-based Video Indexing Using Phonetic Disparity Search

    This dissertation presents and evaluates a method to the video indexing problem by investigating a categorization method that transcribes audio content through Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) combined with Dynamic Contextualization (DC), Phonetic Disparity Search (PDS) and Metaphone indexation. The suggested approach applies genome pattern matching algorithms with computational summarization to build a database infrastructure that provides an indexed summary of the original audio content. PDS complements the contextual phoneme indexing approach by optimizing topic seek performance and accuracy in large video content structures. A prototype was established to translate news broadcast video into text and phonemes automatically by using ASR utterance conversions. Each phonetic utterance extraction was then categorized, converted to Metaphones, and stored in a repository with contextual topical information attached and indexed for posterior search analysis. Following the original design strategy, a custom parallel interface was built to measure the capabilities of dissimilar phonetic queries and provide an interface for result analysis. The postulated solution provides evidence of a superior topic matching when compared to traditional word and phoneme search methods. Experimental results demonstrate that PDS can be 3.7% better than the same phoneme query, Metaphone search proved to be 154.6% better than the same phoneme seek and 68.1 % better than the equivalent word search
