Characterizing Service Level Objectives for Cloud Services: Motivation of Short-Term Cache Allocation Performance Modeling

    Get PDF
Service level objectives (SLOs) stipulate performance goals for cloud applications, microservices, and infrastructure. SLOs are widely used, in part, because system managers can tailor goals to their products, companies, and workloads. Systems research intended to support strong SLOs should target realistic performance goals used by system managers in the field. Evaluations conducted with uncommon SLO goals may not translate to real systems. Some textbooks discuss the structure of SLOs but (1) they only sketch SLO goals and (2) they use outdated examples. We mined real SLOs published on the web, extracted their goals and characterized them. Many web documents discuss SLOs loosely but few provide details and reflect real settings. Systematic literature review (SLR) prunes results and reduces bias by (1) modeling expected SLO structure and (2) detecting and removing outliers. We collected 75 SLOs where response time, query percentile and reporting period were specified. We used these SLOs to confirm and refute common perceptions. For example, we found few SLOs with response time guarantees below 10 ms for 90% or more queries. This reality bolsters perceptions that single digit SLOs face fundamental research challenges. This work was funded by NSF Grants 1749501 and 1350941.No embargoAcademic Major: Computer Science and EngineeringAcademic Major: Financ

The Effect Of Student Learning Objectives On Teachers And Teaching As Part Of The Teacher Evaluation Process: A Grounded Theory Study

    Get PDF
Teacher evaluation is changing in the United States, primarily due to federal policies requiring that measures of student growth be embedded within teacher evaluation systems. Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) emerged as one way to measure teacher effectiveness. SLOs are teacher-developed goals for student achievement that reflect student learning and growth over a specified time period. Each state or district utilizing SLOs in teacher evaluation implements SLOs in a different way, and the details of SLO implementation affect the extent to which teaching is improved. This grounded theory research study investigated the influence of SLOs on teachers and teaching. The researcher interviewed 20 teachers from six regions of the United States. This research identified three dimensions of SLO implementation that influence SLOs\u27 effect: School Leadership, School Climate and Teacher Agency. These dimensions are explored in this research, resulting in recommendations that would serve to enhance the benefits of SLOs on teachers and teaching. Additionally, future research suggestions are noted to add to the growing body of research on SLOs

Straight Line Orbits in Hamiltonian Flows

We investigate periodic straight-line orbits (SLO) in Hamiltonian force fields using both direct and inverse methods. A general theorem is proven for natural Hamiltonians quadratic in the momenta in arbitrary dimension and specialized to two and three dimension. Next we specialize to homogeneous potentials and their superpositions, including the familiar H\'enon-Heiles problem. It is shown that SLO's can exist for arbitrary finite superpositions of NN-forms. The results are applied to a family of generalized H\'enon-Heiles potentials having discrete rotational symmetry. SLO's are also found for superpositions of these potentials.Comment: laTeX with 6 figure
