Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology for assessing thesauri and other controlled vocabularies management tools that can represent content using the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) data model, and their use in a Linked Open Data (LOD) paradigm. It effectively analyses selected set of tools in order to prove the validity of the method. Design/methodology/approach – A set of 27 criteria grouped in five evaluation indicators is proposed and applied to ten vocabulary management applications which are compliant with the SKOS data model. Previous studies of controlled vocabulary management software are gathered and analyzed, to compare the evaluation parameters used and the results obtained for each tool. Findings – The results indicate that the tool that obtains the highest score in every indicator is Poolparty. The second and third tools are, respectively, TemaTres and Intelligent Theme Manager, but scoring lower in most of the evaluation items. The use of a broad set of criteria to evaluate vocabularies management tools gives satisfactory results. The set of five indicators and 27 criteria proposed here represents a useful evaluation system in the selection of current and future tools to manage vocabularies. Research limitations/implications – The paper only assesses the ten most important/well know software tools applied for thesaurus and vocabulary management until October 2016. However, the evaluation criteria could be applied to new software that could appear in the future to create/manage SKOS vocabularies in compliance with LOD standards. Originality/value – The originality of this paper relies on the proposed indicators and criteria to evaluate vocabulary management tools. Those criteria and indicators can be valuable also for future software that might appear. The indicators are also applied to the most exhaustive and qualified list of this kind of tools. The paper will help designers, information architects, metadata librarians, and other staff involved in the design of digital information systems, to choose the right tool to manage their vocabularies in a LOD/vocabulary scenario

A Semantic Web methodological framework to evaluate the support of integrity in thesaurus tools

12 p.With the Semantic Web, thesauri recover a relevant role supporting semantic searches and other added-value services. Thesaurus standards define what constructs a thesaurus can have and the integrity rules it must comply with. Thesaurus editors can be helped in their work if thesaurus tools offer them support for integrity, warning when integrity rules are violated and/or helping them to correct these mistakes. The most recent thesaurus standard is ISO 25964, which supersedes ISO 2788, evolving towards concept-based thesauri, better aligned with the Semantic Web approach than the term-based thesauri of ISO 2788. However, the W3C recommendation for KOS (Knowledge Organization System) representation in the semantic web context is SKOS, which is in fact prior to ISO 25964. This paper focuses on thesaurus integrity and the evolution from ISO 2788 to ISO 25964. Its effect on integrity issues is analyzed. A methodological proposal for evaluating integrity support in thesaurus tools, arising from the results of this work, is presented. Its target audience is professionals in charge of thesaurus edition. Besides being adapted to the most recent thesaurus standard, ISO 25964, it also includes the comparison of ISO standards with SKOS. The paper is completed with the presentation of the results of applying it to three thesaurus tools

In this project, he develops the evaluation of seven thesaurus software tools, in the implementation of a controlled vocabulary, for the CAAC (Collections and Archives of Contemporary Art of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Cuenca, UCLM) in collaboration with UC3M; framed in the "Media Art vocabulary" project. For the conservation of artistic products as digital objects of the museum of Cuenca, Spain. The Construction and application of the thesaurus, Web implementation, publication of its terms as Linked Data, using TemaTres Software. A customized method is used combining quality, usability and semantic web techniques. A method was designed to evaluate the characteristics of each of the tools. Such as the availability of download, easy of access, use, learning, deployment on the server, sharing, and exchange of data, and free use. This study is a part project to Vocabularies for a Media Art Archives and Collections Network. This project establishes the scientific and methodological convergence of two research teams, one from Humanities, Art and Fine Arts, the other from Documentation, with a support of Computer Science and Audiovisual Communication. The importance of project progress lies in metadata labeling, identification by descriptors of the specific thesaurus, guarantee of semantic reuse of content, interoperability for a network of Media Art archives and collections, its digital continuity and dissemination in virtual spaces Wide projection. Winning the TemaTres tool, the thesaurus was implemented in the period from April to July 2019.The Minister of Economy and Competitiveness (Spain) for the funding of the project "Vocabularies for a Network of Archives and Media Art Collections and its effects: metaliteracy and knowledge tourism" whose reference is HAR2016-75949-C2-1-R. P. 711-722Thesauri are valuable knowledge organization systems (KOSs) that support advanced information retrieval. The Semantic Web has brought a renewed interest in thesauri as a support for semantic searches and other added-value services. Tools that manage thesauri permit them to be created, edited and queried. The integrity restrictions on thesauri should also be controlled by these tools. However, there is also the possibility of thesaurus exchange, which becomes relevant in the Semantic Web context, where information exchange is a crucial facility. In fact, interoperability at the information level has received an important boost with the stabilization of the SKOS standard as a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Recommendation. Furthermore, the feasibility of integrating software is a valuable feature for software developers. An evaluation framework for thesaurus tools is proposed, which includes the issues of functionalities, construct support, integrity, information interoperability and feasibility of integrating software. It is original in focusing on SemanticWeb conformity and interoperabilityS

Purpose This paper analyzes various thesaurus formats for converting data and how they can easily be implemented in libraries. These data formats are very important and necessary because they can easily transfer data from one system to another. The main focus of this system is on the data format of the Thesaurus Constructon. Methodology It is made with the TemaTres tool, which is used by many other tools. It has many new and modern features that librarians can use to create a new interface. In other words, it is possible to link other software very easily through these formats. There are four main steps to follow to build this system such as (i) Study the Thesaurus Subject Repositories; (ii) Comparative Study of Controlled Vocabulary Tools; (iii) Construction of Controlled Vocabularies; (iv) Creation of Formats for Thesaurus. Findings Users will benefit a lot from using this interface as they will be able to access all the information they need very easily. In addition, two of these formats, MARC21 and MADS, can be imported into Koha, allowing users to access additional information from Koha\u27s OPAC interface that is located within TemaTres. Originality With these concepts, thesaurus of any subject can be created and data linking between other software can be done. It is possible to publish any types of linked data formats with the help of Apache Jena and Apache Jena Fuseki to external integration for easy access of metadata. Therefore a prototype vocabulary can be created through this system from which all libraries can benefit

    Engineering Agile Big-Data Systems

To be effective, data-intensive systems require extensive ongoing customisation to reflect changing user requirements, organisational policies, and the structure and interpretation of the data they hold. Manual customisation is expensive, time-consuming, and error-prone. In large complex systems, the value of the data can be such that exhaustive testing is necessary before any new feature can be added to the existing design. In most cases, the precise details of requirements, policies and data will change during the lifetime of the system, forcing a choice between expensive modification and continued operation with an inefficient design.Engineering Agile Big-Data Systems outlines an approach to dealing with these problems in software and data engineering, describing a methodology for aligning these processes throughout product lifecycles. It discusses tools which can be used to achieve these goals, and, in a number of case studies, shows how the tools and methodology have been used to improve a variety of academic and business systems

Toward linked data: The Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus

    Get PDF
The Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary that will be used to describe music resources and is developed by the Music Library Association in conjunction with the Library of Congress. The objective of this study is to report on the current status of the LCMPT and to outline future steps which will allow the thesaurus to operate in a linked data environment. Four research questions examined the Simple Knowledge Organization System and its use with the LCMPT: the ways in which controlled vocabularies can be transformed into the Simple Knowledge Organization System format, the technologies and methods currently in use for this process, the effectiveness of these technologies and methods, and how the LCMPT can be most effectively converted into the Simple Knowledge Organization System format. Using existing documents, this qualitative study examined official World Wide Web Consortium documentation, the Open Metadata Registry, and was informed by work on the LCMPT performed at the Library of Congress. Tasks completed during an internship at the Library of Congress included discussion and planning for further LCMPT development and progress, development of the LCMPT Authority Data Elements, consideration of existing technologies and how they might be used in the development and deployment of LCMPT, conversion of existing LCMPT documentation into a more accessible format, research and documentation of the hierarchy of LCMPT, deployment of the LCMPT to a vocabulary space and element set space in the Open Metadata Registry, and consideration for future development of the LCMPT. The results of this study help to determine whether applying Semantic Web tools such as the Simple Knowledge Organization System to the LCMPT will allow music catalogers and other users of controlled vocabularies to begin harnessing the many potential benefits of the Semantic Web.Master of Science in Information Scienc
