Absolute angle-differential elastic cross sections for electron collisions with diacetylene

    Get PDF
We report measured and calculated differential elastic cross sections for collisions of low-energy electrons with diacetylene (1,3-butadiyne). A generally satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment has been found. The calculated cross sections provide interesting insight into the underlying resonant structure

A Novel Study of the Relation Between Students Navigational Behavior on Blackboard and their Learning Performance in an Undergraduate Networking Course

This paper provides an overview of students behavior analysis on a learning management system (LMS), Blackboard (Bb) Learn for a core data communications course of the Undergraduate IT program in the Information Sciences and Technology (IST) Department at George Mason University (GMU). This study is an attempt to understand the navigational behavior of students on Blackboard Learn which can be further attributed to the overall performance of the students. In total, 160 undergraduate students participated in the study. Vast amount of students activities data across all four sections of the course were collected. All sections have similar content, assessment design and instruction methods. A correlation analysis between the different assessment methods and various key variables such as total student time, total number of logins and various other factors were performed, to evaluate students engagement on Blackboard Learn. Our findings can help instructors to efficiently identify students strengths or weaknesses and fine-tune their courses for better student engagement and performance

    Get PDF

Fragments of Boethius: The Reconstruction of the Cotton Manuscript of the Alfredian Text

‘These fragments I have shored against my ruins’: T. S. Eliot's metaphor in The Waste Land evokes the evanescent frailty of human existence and worldly endeavour with a poignancy that the Anglo-Saxons would surely have appreciated. Such a concept lies at the heart of Boethius's De consolatione Philosophiae, and perhaps prompted King Alfred to include this work amongst those which he considered most necessary for all men to know. Written in the early sixth century, Boethius's work was translated from Latin into Old English at the end of the ninth century, possibly by Alfred himself. It survives in two versions, one in prose (probably composed first) and the other in prose and verse, containing versifications of Boethius's Latin metres which had originally been rendered as Old English prose. It is the latter of these versions which will be the focus of my discussion here. Damaged beyond repair by fire and water, the set of fragments which contains this copy will be seen to epitomize the ideas imparted by the work in ways that Alfred could never have envisaged

The role of influenza neuraminidase transmembrane domain on budding and virus morphology

Influenza A virus neuraminidase (NA), a type II transmembrane glycoprotein plays a role in the cleavage of sialic acids and facilitating the release of mature virions from the surface of infected cells. NA has also previously been shown to play a role in virion formation during influenza A virus budding, although the exact mechanisms by which NA contributes to influenza virion formation and morphology is currently unknown. Previous research has shown that mutations within the transmembrane domain (TMD) of NA can result in alteration in virion morphology, particularly in the production of filament like influenza virions. In this research project we examined if the TMD does indeed play a role in influenza virus budding and morphology. We utilised both full and partial mutations of the TMD of NA from A/WSN/33, a primarily spherical lab adapted influenza strain, with the TMD of a primarily filamentous strain A/California/09. To evaluate the effects of TMD on the morphology of a primarily spherical strain with that of filamentous strain. This study used a transfection based virus like particle (VLP) system to examine the effects of TMD alterations on morphology, utilising various biochemical and microscopy methods. Our findings show that as previously indicated mutations within the TMD do result in alterations to virion morphology, as well as showing that despite previous theories both NA and NA’s TMD may play a more active role in in budding and morphology than previously though
