The Ormulum in the Seventeenth Century:The Manuscript and Its Early Readers

The most recent edition of the Ormulum by Robert Holt (The Ormulum, with the notes and glossary of Dr. R. M. White, OUP, Oxford, 1878) pays little or no attention to its seventeenth-century readers and owners: the philologists Jan van Vliet (1622–1666) and Francis Junius (1591–1677). This study aims to fill this lacuna in the reception history of the Ormulum by analysing the study of the Ormulum in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The results show a vivid and imaginative approach to the Ormulum by its first active student, Jan van Vliet, who discovered its metrical qualities and studied its lexicon. Despite a declining interest in the Ormulum by later scholars, the activities and ideas of its early readers have been a lasting influence on the reception of this unique text

When journalists lose their foothold: Swedish and Norwegian verification scandals in #Metoo-movement coverage

The global #MeToo movement exposed the widespread structural problem of sexual harassment, which was also the case in Sweden and Norway. Across the various sectors of working life, women were able to identify with the call. This perspective, however, was under- mined in the public sphere when person-centred scandal stories about a few powerholders and media celebrities took over. In addition, a lack of verifiable documentation – and uncritical use of anonymous sources – ignited renewed debates about the ethical standards of professional journalism. This article discusses two alleged #MeToo cases: Aftonbladet’s dramatic and unfounded accusations against the theatre CEO Benny Fredriksson and VG’s misuse and manipulation of a “bar-dance” episode involving the Norwegian Labour politician Trond Giske. Both media stories developed into “critical incidents”, resulting in public criticism, self-examination and discussions around ethical rules and regulation

Design, synthesis and Applications of Metal Organic Framework

Porous materials have been a focus of researchers for their applications as molecular storage, molecular sensing, catalysis, asymmetric synthesis and host materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a promising new class of porous crystalline solids because they exhibit large pore volumes, high surface areas, permanent porosity, high thermal stability, and feature open channels with tunable dimensions and topology. We are currently investigating the design, synthesis, and structures of a new family of MOFs derived from transition metals complexes of 4-(imidazole-1-yl)benzoic acids. Here we present our effort in continuing design and synthesis MOFs composed of 4-(imidazole-1-yl)benzoic acids to expand our knowledge about 4-(imidazole-1-yl)benzoic acid MOF family. A series of ligands are synthesized and Cu MOF-3N, 4, 5 and Cd MOF-3 were synthesized, structure determination found out metal-ligand complex follows our proposal, while Cu MOF-4,5 exhibit porous framework structure via absolute structure determination. Sorption behavior is a key focus in MOF application because the great potential applications MOF bears. Here we carry out a fundamental study about MOF texture and selectivity on MOF-5 and Cd MOF-2. Non-polar polyaromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, polar molecules such as 2-naphthol, ibuprofen were selected to test our hypothesis that sorption is influenced by the degree of tight fitting, and guest-host interaction such as van der waals and hydrogen bonding. By determining Langmuir isotherms of selected guest molecules, we are able to demonstrate our hypothesis that tighter the fit of the guest molecule and the pores, the higher the amount it would sorb. The sorption difference of non-polar and polar molecules suggest hydrogen bonding is not involved in guest sorption and the dominating force of sorption is hydrophobic interaction. Polymorphism is an interesting phenomenon that bears great value in pharmaceutical industry. Here we report the first case for MOF to serve as a heterogeneous surface that induced nucleation of indomethacin. It is also a first report of this polymorph form of indomethacin. PXRD, DSC, TGA, NMR are conducted as our initial investigation effort. This polymorph exhibits exceptionally thermal stability and low solubility, indicating an unusual tight binding between indomethacin and ethanol solvate

Gender and discipline: publication practices in design

Design research and writing began to appear in scholarly journals over 30 years ago, coinciding in Australia with the transition of Design education into universities. Concurrently, a significant increase in the number of women in what could be considered a male-dominated profession and emergent discipline actuated feminist-informed âwomen and Designâ writing. While this writing raised important questions about gender and Design, it is generally not cited in Design literatures that do not have a specifically feminist focus, and as this article will attest, publication and citation rates demonstrate the dominance of men in positions of influence in scholarly Design journals. This is particularly problematic for female Design academics and for the field in the current audit climate in universities, whereby state-funded research output is measured by citation analysis systems. Drawing on feminist and Foucauldian theorizations of power and knowledge, and supported by an empirical audit and analysis of gender distribution in publication in two scholarly Design journals, I argue first that scholarship as a form of social practice in new professional fields such as Design is complexly disciplined and problematically gendered. Second, I argue that further empirical research, and new and different kinds of feminist-informed writing that attend closely to issues of gender, is required to productively disrupt and reconceptualize Design scholarship as it is currently practiced

1.3. Sangro Valley and the Five (Paperless) Seasons: Lessons on Building Effective Digital Recording Workflows for Archaeological Fieldwork

Since 2011 the Sangro Valley Project (Italy) has employed a custom-built paperless recording system with iPads and FileMaker at its core. This paper summarizes the evolution of the project’s paperless system and presents lessons learned during five seasons of use (2011–2015) and during the author’s work with two other projects: the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia (Italy), and the Say Kah Archaeological Project (Belize). It identifies problems commonly encountered during the implementation of paperless systems and offers recommendations for avoiding or fixing them. Many of these problems are not unique to projects with digital recording systems, and most difficulties were not technical in nature. Rather, many of the most significant problems arose from integrating workflows. Digital recording systems can streamline fieldwork, improve the quality of data collected in the field, significantly reduce errors and misunderstandings, and facilitate new interpretive approaches, but they require thoughtful preparation and implementation.https://dc.uwm.edu/arthist_mobilizingthepast/1004/thumbnail.jp
