    Accurate automatic tuning circuit for bipolar integrated filters

    An accurate automatic tuning circuit for tuning the cutoff frequency and Q-factor of high-frequency bipolar filters is presented. The circuit is based on a voltage controlled quadrature oscillator (VCO). The frequency and the RMS (root mean square) amplitude of the oscillator output signal are locked to the frequency and the RMS amplitude of a reference signal, respectively. Special attention is paid to the actual Q-factor in the oscillator. Experimental results for a breadboard circuit operating from 136 to 317 kHz are presente

    Nonlinear time-domain macromodeling of OTA circuits

    The authors present an accurate nonlinear macromodel of the operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) which is suitable for the transient simulation of OTA-based CMOS analog integrated circuits. As compared to device-level OTA models, the proposed macromodel is advantageous in terms of CPU time. Also, in circuits with many OTAs, it does not have the problems of convergence that the device-level MODEL has. All the macromodel parameters can be calculated from measurements made at the OTA terminals. Experimental results from a 3-ÎŒm CMOS OTA prototype as well as simulation results from device-level models are included and compared to simulation results from the macromodel

    The Nyquist criterion: a useful tool for the robust design of continuous-time ΣΔ modulators

    This paper introduces a figure of merit for the robustness of continuous-time sigma-delta modulators. It is based on the Nyquist criterion for the equivalent discrete-time (DT) loop filter. It is shown how continuous-time modulators can be designed by optimizing this figure of merit. This way modulators with increased robustness against variations in the noise-transfer function (NTF) parameters are obtained. This is particularly useful for constrained systems, where the system order exceeds the number of design parameters. This situation occurs for example due to the effect of excess loop delay (ELD) or finite gain bandwidth (GBW) of the opamps. Additionally, it is shown that the optimization is equivalent to the minimization of H_infinity, the maximum out-of-band gain of the NTF. This explains why conventional design strategies that are based on H_infinity, such as Schreier’s approach, provide quite robust modulator designs in the case of unconstrained architectures
