    Transport infrastructure monitoring by data fusion of GPR and SAR imagery information

    In order to maintain the highest operational safety standards, it is crucial that surface and structural deformation caused by geophysical natural hazards and human-related activities in linear transport networks (such as highways and railways) are monitored and evaluated. Today, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a well-established technology among the available non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for the collection of ground-based information. Concurrently, the space-borne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is another well-known viable methodology for large-scale investigations of road network surface deformations. However, it is fair to comment that the potential of this method in the area of transport infrastructure monitoring has not yet been sufficiently explored. Within this context, this research demonstrates the viability of integrating InSAR and GPR for monitoring transport assets at network level. The main theoretical and working principles of the two above-mentioned methodologies have been presented and discussed, and the advantage and drawbacks of each technique have then been analysed. The final section of the paper examines a recent experimental activity carried out on a real-life railway located in Puglia, Southern Italy. Test outcomes prove the viability of the proposed data fusion methodology for monitoring the health of transport assets at network level

    SAR tomography consists in exploiting multiple images from the same area acquired from a slightly different angle to retrieve the 3-D distribution of the complex reflectivity on the ground. As the transmitted waves are coherent, the desired spatial information (along with the vertical axis) is coded in the phase of the pixels. Many methods have been proposed to retrieve this information in the past years. However, the natural redundancies of the scene are generally not exploited to improve the tomographic estimation step. This Ph.D. presents new approaches to regularize the estimated reflectivity density obtained through SAR tomography by exploiting the urban geometrical structures.La tomographie SAR exploite plusieurs acquisitions d'une mĂȘme zone acquises d'un point de vue lĂ©gerement diffĂ©rent pour reconstruire la densitĂ© complexe de rĂ©flectivitĂ© au sol.     Bridge monitoring and assessment by high-resolution satellite remote sensing technologies

    Satellite Remote-Sensing has been successfully applied for detection of natural-hazards, (e.g. seismic events, landslides and subsidence) and transport infrastructure monitoring over the last few years. Persistent Scatterer SAR Interferometry (PSI), is a satellite remote sensing technique able to measure ground displacements over the time. More specifically, the PSI technique is an evolution of the DInSAR technique and it is based on a statistical multi-temporal differential interferogram analysis. This allows to determine coherent stable-pixels over a data-stack of SAR images, in order to identify potential ground displacements. This study aims at demonstrating the potential of the PSI technique as an innovative health-monitoring methodology for the structural integrity of bridges. For this purpose, X‐Band COSMO‐SkyMed images provided by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) were acquired and processed in order to detect structural displacements of the Rochester Bridge in Rochester, UK. Outcomes of this investigation outlined the presence of various PSs over the inspected bridge, which were proven useful to achieve a more comprehensive monitoring methodology and to assess the structural integrity of the bridge. This research paves the way for the development of a novel interpretation approach relying on the integration between remote-sensing technologies and on-site surveys to improve upon current maintenance strategies for bridges and transport assets

    Long-term monitoring of geodynamic surface deformation using SAR interferometry

    Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2014Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful tool to measure surface deformation and is well suited for surveying active volcanoes using historical and existing satellites. However, the value and applicability of InSAR for geodynamic monitoring problems is limited by the influence of temporal decorrelation and electromagnetic path delay variations in the atmosphere, both of which reduce the sensitivity and accuracy of the technique. The aim of this PhD thesis research is: how to optimize the quantity and quality of deformation signals extracted from InSAR stacks that contain only a low number of images in order to facilitate volcano monitoring and the study of their geophysical signatures. In particular, the focus is on methods of mitigating atmospheric artifacts in interferograms by combining time-series InSAR techniques and external atmospheric delay maps derived by Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. In the first chapter of the thesis, the potential of the NWP Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model for InSAR data correction has been studied extensively. Forecasted atmospheric delays derived from operational High Resolution Rapid Refresh for the Alaska region (HRRRAK) products have been compared to radiosonding measurements in the first chapter. The result suggests that the HRRR-AK operational products are a good data source for correcting atmospheric delays in spaceborne geodetic radar observations, if the geophysical signal to be observed is larger than 20 mm. In the second chapter, an advanced method for integrating NWP products into the time series InSAR workflow is developed. The efficiency of the algorithm is tested via simulated data experiments, which demonstrate the method outperforms other more conventional methods. In Chapter 3, a geophysical case study is performed by applying the developed algorithm to the active volcanoes of Unimak Island Alaska (Westdahl, Fisher and Shishaldin) for long term volcano deformation monitoring. The volcano source location at Westdahl is determined to be approx. 7 km below sea level and approx. 3.5 km north of the Westdahl peak. This study demonstrates that Fisher caldera has had continuous subsidence over more than 10 years and there is no evident deformation signal around Shishaldin peak.Chapter 1.     Exploiting satellite SAR for archaeological prospection and heritage site protection

    Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing has a long history of use and reached a good level of maturity in archaeological and cultural heritage applications, yet further advances are viable through the exploitation of novel sensor data and imaging modes, big data and high-performance computing, advanced and automated analysis methods. This paper showcases the main research avenues in this field, with a focus on archaeological prospection and heritage site protection. Six demonstration use-cases with a wealth of heritage asset types (e.g. excavated and still buried archaeological features, standing monuments, natural reserves, burial mounds, paleo-channels) and respective scientific research objectives are presented: the Ostia-Portus area and the wider Province of Rome (Italy), the city of Wuhan and the Jiuzhaigou National Park (China), and the Siberian “Valley of the Kings” (Russia). Input data encompass both archive and newly tasked medium to very high-resolution imagery acquired over the last decade from satellite (e.g. Copernicus Sentinels and ESA Third Party Missions) and aerial (e.g. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAV) platforms, as well as field-based evidence and ground truth, auxiliary topographic data, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), and monitoring data from geodetic campaigns and networks. The novel results achieved for the use-cases contribute to the discussion on the advantages and limitations of optical and SAR-based archaeological and heritage applications aimed to detect buried and sub-surface archaeological assets across rural and semi-vegetated landscapes, identify threats to cultural heritage assets due to ground instability and urban development in large metropolises, and monitor post-disaster impacts in natural reserves

    Cooperative Coherent Multistatic Imaging and Phase Synchronization in Networked Sensing

    Coherent multistatic radio imaging represents a pivotal opportunity for forthcoming wireless networks, which involves distributed nodes cooperating to achieve accurate sensing resolution and robustness. This paper delves into cooperative coherent imaging for vehicular radar networks. Herein, multiple radar-equipped vehicles cooperate to improve collective sensing capabilities and address the fundamental issue of distinguishing weak targets in close proximity to strong ones, a critical challenge for vulnerable road users protection. We prove the significant benefits of cooperative coherent imaging in the considered automotive scenario in terms of both probability of correct detection, evaluated considering several system parameters, as well as resolution capabilities, showcased by a dedicated experimental campaign wherein the collaboration between two vehicles enables the detection of the legs of a pedestrian close to a parked car. Moreover, as \textit{coherent} processing of several sensors' data requires very tight accuracy on clock synchronization and sensor's positioning -- referred to as \textit{phase synchronization} -- (such that to predict sensor-target distances up to a fraction of the carrier wavelength), we present a general three-step cooperative multistatic phase synchronization procedure, detailing the required information exchange among vehicles in the specific automotive radar context and assessing its feasibility and performance by hybrid Cram\'er-Rao bound.Comment: 13 page

    Using InSAR and GPR techniques to detect subsidence: application to the coastal area of “A Xunqueira” (NW Spain)

    Climate change represents an important cause of subsidence, especially in coastal cities affected by changes in surface water level and water table. This paper presents a complementary study of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for the early detection of subsidence and sinkhole phenomena. The methodology was applied to a coastal urban area in Galicia, northwest Spain (humid region), showing apparent signs of subsidence and building settlement during the last two years. Two different InSAR methods are compared for the period from June 2021 to March 2022: PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) and SBAS (Small Baseline Subsets), and the average deformation velocities obtained resulted in −3.0 mm/yr and −4.1 mm/yr, respectively. Additional GPR data were collected in January 2022 to validate the InSAR results, which detected subsidence in agreement with the persistent scatters obtained from the PSI method.
