African Housing Renaissance: The Case of Gacuriro Valley Satellite Settlements, Kigali, Rwanda

This article traces an African Housing Renaissance through the Trabantenstadt (Satellite City) vision for Kigali embedded in the Gacuriro Valley Satellite, which is composed of two settlements (or umudugudu, in Kinyarwanda): Kigali 2020 (2001–2005) and Kigali Vision (2013–2016). While the Kigali 2020 is an integrated Trabant (Satellite) which is able to interact with the existing context and trace the future built and unbuilt developments, the Kigali Vision adopts the idea of a protected compound, morphologically connected with the older settlements, but unable to tackle and solve spatial and social issues due to its ‘defensive’ character. The particular topography of the hillside receives an ambivalent interpretation: in the first umudugudu, the slope inspires the whole project, an organic raumplan, and in the second it has been denied, having been leveled for flat houses’ foundations and consequently a flat spatial indoor distribution. Nevertheless, this article argues that despite the evident architectural differences between the two settlements, they remain in the tradition of the Neues Bauen, in which mass housing represents the physical way of accommodating different social classes, granting equal and favorable living conditions. The typological variety demonstrates the aim to inclusively target distinct segments of the population. Apartment buildings (condominiums), row houses, twin houses and single houses mixed with public facilities, schools, a church, and sports structures, make up the settlements as unique pieces of a system and, at the same time, a singular whole

The Siedlungen are housing estates built in between the 1925 and 1931 that defined new forms of urban expansion in Frankfurt. Under the ideas of the Garden City as a mean of dissemination of the city in the field Siedlungen estates are built in low density residential areas interspersed with green areas. Through the identification, and analysis of urban qualities of the traditional city: homogeneous urban form, comprehensive and closed; opposed to the industrial city: heterogeneous urban form, fragmented, and undefined, modern German architects developed urban rationalization processes in response to the uncontrolled growth of the modern metropolis. From the house design to the city planning, the Siedlungen exemplifies the most important attempts to rationalize the industrial city. Industrialize processes in building technology for architectural design, defines new qualitative and quantitative parameters for the production of modern housing, with the construction of 15.000 housing units. Modern production enabled to tackle urban problems in different urban scales, giving the architect’s work the role of an agent of large urban transformations. The urban plan of Frankfurt coordinated by Ernst May was based on a vision of decentralization and zoning at a metropolitan scale. This outcome characterizes an intervention process in which general and particular urban issues are addressed in sectorial plans, within a specific approach to each urban area

Architecture, in harmony with nature, bases its arguments on a universal attitude of coexistence with the environment and with the idea of using the natural conditions found therein. From this idea, the article seeks mechanisms that can help us to observe the changes produced by architecture, recognizing its compatibility with the logic of the environment. Using three conceptual tools that are used in mapping architecture, infrastructure and subsoil, three city models are cited that were produced under the theories of the Modern Movement: Römerstadt, Sunila and Park Hill. This experimental trial, unfinished and part of a wider research project, has the objective of defining a methodology for the reconnaissance of occupied areas, with superimposed interventions, subject to continuous pressures and disturbances that disrupt the normal life developed within them

This article describes the different variants of the modal sollen as they appear in the German dialects in Northern Moravia. The material is taken from the questionnaires used for the Language atlas of German historical dialects within the area of the Czech Republic. Among the morphological forms of the modal sollen, special attention is paid to the 1st and 3rd person singular, the present tense and the indicative and past conjunctive of the 2nd and 3rd person singular. On the basis of the territorial distribution of the discovered variants, the examined langue area can be divided into three sub-areas: the eastern part (Nový Jičín/Neu-Titschein, Opava/Troppau, Fulnek, Odry/Odrau, etc.), the north-western part (Bruntál/Freudenthal, Krnov/Jägerndorf, etc.) and the western part (Rýmařov/Römerstadt, Šumperk/Mährisch Schönberg, etc.). By comparing the forms found in the areas of Northern Moravia with the forms found in the directly neighbouring district of Hřebečsko (Schönhengst), one can find a significant difference. While in Northern Moravia forms containing the stem vowel e and a post-alveolar spirant are isolated, in Hřebečsko (Schönhengst) they are quite common. Comparing these findings with the language used during the middle age in administrative documents in Moravia (early new-upper-office German), it is possible to say that in spite of the many differences in detail, there is a certain common tendency, namely an increase in the use of the grapheme /s/ at the beginning of the word, the farer one gets to the north. In Northern Moravia, this variant becomes the only variant in official documents
