    DeSyRe: on-Demand System Reliability

    The DeSyRe project builds on-demand adaptive and reliable Systems-on-Chips (SoCs). As fabrication technology scales down, chips are becoming less reliable, thereby incurring increased power and performance costs for fault tolerance. To make matters worse, power density is becoming a significant limiting factor in SoC design, in general. In the face of such changes in the technological landscape, current solutions for fault tolerance are expected to introduce excessive overheads in future systems. Moreover, attempting to design and manufacture a totally defect and fault-free system, would impact heavily, even prohibitively, the design, manufacturing, and testing costs, as well as the system performance and power consumption. In this context, DeSyRe delivers a new generation of systems that are reliable by design at well-balanced power, performance, and design costs. In our attempt to reduce the overheads of fault-tolerance, only a small fraction of the chip is built to be fault-free. This fault-free part is then employed to manage the remaining fault-prone resources of the SoC. The DeSyRe framework is applied to two medical systems with high safety requirements (measured using the IEC 61508 functional safety standard) and tight power and performance constraints

    Virtual Runtime Application Partitions for Resource Management in Massively Parallel Architectures

    This thesis presents a novel design paradigm, called Virtual Runtime Application Partitions (VRAP), to judiciously utilize the on-chip resources. As the dark silicon era approaches, where the power considerations will allow only a fraction chip to be powered on, judicious resource management will become a key consideration in future designs. Most of the works on resource management treat only the physical components (i.e. computation, communication, and memory blocks) as resources and manipulate the component to application mapping to optimize various parameters (e.g. energy efficiency). To further enhance the optimization potential, in addition to the physical resources we propose to manipulate abstract resources (i.e. voltage/frequency operating point, the fault-tolerance strength, the degree of parallelism, and the configuration architecture). The proposed framework (i.e. VRAP) encapsulates methods, algorithms, and hardware blocks to provide each application with the abstract resources tailored to its needs. To test the efficacy of this concept, we have developed three distinct self adaptive environments: (i) Private Operating Environment (POE), (ii) Private Reliability Environment (PRE), and (iii) Private Configuration Environment (PCE) that collectively ensure that each application meets its deadlines using minimal platform resources. In this work several novel architectural enhancements, algorithms and policies are presented to realize the virtual runtime application partitions efficiently. Considering the future design trends, we have chosen Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) and Network on Chips (NoCs) to test the feasibility of our approach. Specifically, we have chosen Dynamically Reconfigurable Resource Array (DRRA) and McNoC as the representative CGRA and NoC platforms. The proposed techniques are compared and evaluated using a variety of quantitative experiments. Synthesis and simulation results demonstrate VRAP significantly enhances the energy and power efficiency compared to state of the art.Siirretty Doriast

    Autonomous Recovery Of Reconfigurable Logic Devices Using Priority Escalation Of Slack

    Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices offer a suitable platform for survivable hardware architectures in mission-critical systems. In this dissertation, active dynamic redundancy-based fault-handling techniques are proposed which exploit the dynamic partial reconfiguration capability of SRAM-based FPGAs. Self-adaptation is realized by employing reconfiguration in detection, diagnosis, and recovery phases. To extend these concepts to semiconductor aging and process variation in the deep submicron era, resilient adaptable processing systems are sought to maintain quality and throughput requirements despite the vulnerabilities of the underlying computational devices. A new approach to autonomous fault-handling which addresses these goals is developed using only a uniplex hardware arrangement. It operates by observing a health metric to achieve Fault Demotion using Recon- figurable Slack (FaDReS). Here an autonomous fault isolation scheme is employed which neither requires test vectors nor suspends the computational throughput, but instead observes the value of a health metric based on runtime input. The deterministic flow of the fault isolation scheme guarantees success in a bounded number of reconfigurations of the FPGA fabric. FaDReS is then extended to the Priority Using Resource Escalation (PURE) online redundancy scheme which considers fault-isolation latency and throughput trade-offs under a dynamic spare arrangement. While deep-submicron designs introduce new challenges, use of adaptive techniques are seen to provide several promising avenues for improving resilience. The scheme developed is demonstrated by hardware design of various signal processing circuits and their implementation on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA device. These include a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) core, Motion Estimation (ME) engine, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Filter, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) blocks in addition to MCNC benchmark circuits. A iii significant reduction in power consumption is achieved ranging from 83% for low motion-activity scenes to 12.5% for high motion activity video scenes in a novel ME engine configuration. For a typical benchmark video sequence, PURE is shown to maintain a PSNR baseline near 32dB. The diagnosability, reconfiguration latency, and resource overhead of each approach is analyzed. Compared to previous alternatives, PURE maintains a PSNR within a difference of 4.02dB to 6.67dB from the fault-free baseline by escalating healthy resources to higher-priority signal processing functions. The results indicate the benefits of priority-aware resiliency over conventional redundancy approaches in terms of fault-recovery, power consumption, and resource-area requirements. Together, these provide a broad range of strategies to achieve autonomous recovery of reconfigurable logic devices under a variety of constraints, operating conditions, and optimization criteria

One of the obstacles to meeting these requirements is related to delivering instructions from instruction memory/caches. The size of instruction memory/cache considerably contributes total chip area. Further, frequent access to caches incurs high power/energy consumption and significantly hampers overall system performance due to cache misses. To reduce the negative effects of the instruction delivery, therefore, this study focuses on the sizing of instruction memory/cache through code size optimization. One observation for code size optimization is that very long instruction word (VLIW) architectures often consume more power and memory space than necessary due to long instruction bit-width. One way to lessen this problem is to adopt a reduced bit-width ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) that has a narrower instruction word length. In practice, however, it is impossible to convert a given ISA fully into an equivalent reduced bit-width one because the narrow instruction word, due to bitwidth restrictions, can encode only a small subset of normal instructions in the original ISA. To explore the possibility of complete conversion of an existing 32-bit ISA into a 16-bit one that supports effectively all 32-bit instructions, we propose the reduced bit-width (e.g. 16-bit × 4-way) VLIW architectures that equivalently behave as their original bit-width (e.g. 32-bit × 4-way) architectures with the help of dynamic implied addressing mode (DIAM). Second, we observe that code duplication techniques have been proposed to increase the reliability against soft errors in multi-issue embedded systems such as VLIW by exploiting empty slots for duplicated instructions. Unfortunately, all duplicated instructions cannot be allocated to empty slots, which enforces generating additional VLIW packets to include the duplicated instructions. The increase of code size due to the extra VLIW packets is necessarily accompanied with the enhanced reliability. In order to minimize code size, we propose a novel approach compiler-assisted dynamic code duplication scheme, which accepts an assembly code composed of only original instructions as input, and generates duplicated instructions at runtime with the help of encoded information attached to original instructions. Since the duplicates of original instructions are not explicitly present in the assembly code, the increase of code size due to the duplicated instructions can be avoided in the proposed scheme. Lastly, the third observation is that, to cope with soft errors similarly to the second observation, a recently proposed software-based technique with TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy) implemented on coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures (CGRA) incurs the increase of configuration size, which is corresponding to the code size of CGRA, and thus extreme overheads in terms of runtime and energy consumption mainly due to expensive voting mechanisms for the outputs from the triplication of every operation. To reduce the expensive performance overhead due to the large configuration from the validation mechanism, we propose selective validation mechanisms for efficient modular redundancy techniques in the datapath on CGRA.     This Open Access book introduces readers to many new techniques for enhancing and optimizing reliability in embedded systems, which have emerged particularly within the last five years. This book introduces the most prominent reliability concerns from today’s points of view and roughly recapitulates the progress in the community so far. Unlike other books that focus on a single abstraction level such circuit level or system level alone, the focus of this book is to deal with the different reliability challenges across different levels starting from the physical level all the way to the system level (cross-layer approaches).     An energy-efficient hardware system for robust and reliable heart rate monitoring

    Cardiac arrhythmia, one of the most common causes of death in the world today, is not always effectively detected by regular examinations, as it usually occurs infrequently and suddenly. Therefore, real-time, continuous monitoring of the heart rate is needed to detect arrhythmia problems sooner and prevent their severe consequences. To make continuous monitoring possible and give it widespread acceptance, a portable heart rate monitoring system must have three key characteristics: (1) accuracy, (2) portability, and (3) long battery life. Previous studies have focused on addressing these problems separately, either improving the accuracy of the monitoring algorithm or the efficiency of the underlying hardware. This thesis proposes a robust and reliable heart rate monitoring system (RRHMS), in which both algorithm accuracy and hardware efficiency are considered. As a result, algorithmic optimizations are exploited to enable further hardware efficiency. In the RRHMS, robust heart rate monitoring is achieved by extracting heart rates from both electrocardiogram (ECG) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) signals and fusing them based on the signal qualities. Therefore, accurate heart rate data can be provided continuously, even when one signal is severely corrupted. Algorithmic optimizations are applied to merge the separate ECG and ABP processing steps into shared ones, which allows shared hardware modules and hence low-area (portable) hardware design. Also, an embedded hardware architecture framework is proposed for the design of the RRHMS hardware system. Coarse-grained functional units (FUs) can be easily added or removed in this framework, allowing for application-specific hardware optimization. Further, the application invariant properties are used to achieve low-overhead fault tolerance in the FUs to enhance reliability. Both ASIC and FPGA implementations of the RRHMS are able to accurately detect heart rates in real time while consuming only 1/2870 and 1/923 of the energy required by the Android implementation

    Whether in automotive with heat stress or in aerospace and nuclear field subjected to cosmic,neutron and gamma radiation, the environment can lead to the development of faults in electronic systems. These faults, which can be transient or permanent, will lead to erroneous results that are unacceptable in some application contexts. The use of so-called rad-hard components is sometimes compromised due to their high costs and supply problems associated with export rules.This thesis proposes a joint hardware and software approach independent of integration technology for using digital programmable devices in environments that generate faults. Our approach includes the definition of a Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architecture (CGRA) able to execute entire application code but also all the hardware and software mechanisms to make it tolerant to transient and permanent faults. This is achieved by the combination of redundancy and dynamic reconfiguration of the CGRA based on a library of configurations generated by a complete conception flow. This implemented flow relies on a flow to map a code represented as a Control and Data Flow Graph (CDFG) on the CGRA architecture by obtaining directly a large number of different configurations and allows to exploit the full potential of architecture.This work, which has been validated through experiments with applications in the field of signal and image processing, has been the subject of two publications in international conferences and of two patents.Que ce soit dans l’automobile avec des contraintes thermiques ou dans l’aérospatial et le nucléaire soumis à des rayonnements ionisants, l’environnement entraîne l’apparition de fautes dans les systèmes électroniques. Ces fautes peuvent être transitoires ou permanentes et vont induire des résultats erronés inacceptables dans certains contextes applicatifs. L’utilisation de composants dits « rad-hard » est parfois compromise par leurs coûts élevés ou les difficultés d’approvisionnement liés aux règles d’exportation.Cette thèse propose une approche conjointe matérielle et logicielle indépendante de la technologie d’intégration permettant d’utiliser des composants numériques programmables dans des environnements susceptibles de générer des fautes. Notre proposition comporte la définition d’une Architecture Reconfigurable à Gros Grains (CGRA) capable d’exécuter des codes applicatifs complets mais aussi l’ensemble des mécanismes matériels et logiciels permettant de rendre cette architecture tolérante aux fautes. Ce résultat est obtenu par l’association de redondance et de reconfiguration dynamique du CGRA en s’appuyant sur une banque de configurations généréepar une chaîne de programmation complète. Cette chaîne outillée repose sur un flot permettant de porter un code sous forme de Control and Data Flow Graph (CDFG) sur l’architecture en obtenant un grand nombre de configurations différentes et qui permet d’exploiter au mieux le potentiel de l’architecture.Les travaux, qui ont été validés aux travers d’expériences sur des applications du domaine du traitement du signal et de l’image, ont fait l’objet de publications en conférences internationales et de dépôts de brevets
