On the tailoring of CAST-32A certification guidance to real COTS multicore architectures
The use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) multicores in real-time industry is on the rise due to multicores' potential performance increase and energy reduction. Yet, the unpredictable impact on timing of contention in shared hardware resources challenges certification. Furthermore, most safety certification standards target single-core architectures and do not provide explicit guidance for multicore processors. Recently, however, CAST-32A has been presented providing guidance for software planning, development and verification in multicores. In this paper, from a theoretical level, we provide a detailed review of CAST-32A objectives and the difficulty of reaching them under current COTS multicore design trends; at experimental level, we assess the difficulties of the application of CAST-32A to a real multicore processor, the NXP P4080.This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) under grant

Parallelism-Aware Memory Interference Delay Analysis for COTS Multicore Systems
In modern Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) multicore systems, each core can
generate many parallel memory requests at a time. The processing of these
parallel requests in the DRAM controller greatly affects the memory
interference delay experienced by running tasks on the platform. In this paper,
we model a modern COTS multicore system which has a nonblocking last-level
cache (LLC) and a DRAM controller that prioritizes reads over writes. To
minimize interference, we focus on LLC and DRAM bank partitioned systems. Based
on the model, we propose an analysis that computes a safe upper bound for the
worst-case memory interference delay. We validated our analysis on a real COTS
multicore platform with a set of carefully designed synthetic benchmarks as
well as SPEC2006 benchmarks. Evaluation results show that our analysis is more
accurately capture the worst-case memory interference delay and provides safer
upper bounds compared to a recently proposed analysis which significantly
under-estimate the delay.Comment: Technical Repor
The potential of programmable logic in the middle: cache bleaching
Consolidating hard real-time systems onto modern multi-core Systems-on-Chip (SoC) is an open challenge. The extensive sharing of hardware resources at the memory hierarchy raises important unpredictability concerns. The problem is exacerbated as more computationally demanding workload is expected to be handled with real-time guarantees in next-generation Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). A large body of works has approached the problem by proposing novel hardware re-designs, and by proposing software-only solutions to mitigate performance interference. Strong from the observation that unpredictability arises from a lack of fine-grained control over the behavior of shared hardware components, we outline a promising new resource management approach. We demonstrate that it is possible to introduce Programmable Logic In-the-Middle (PLIM) between a traditional multi-core processor and main memory. This provides the unique capability of manipulating individual memory transactions. We propose a proof-of-concept system implementation of PLIM modules on a commercial multi-core SoC. The PLIM approach is then leveraged to solve long-standing issues with cache coloring. Thanks to PLIM, colored sparse addresses can be re-compacted in main memory. This is the base principle behind the technique we call Cache Bleaching. We evaluate our design on real applications and propose hypervisor-level adaptations to showcase the potential of the PLIM approach.Accepted manuscrip
DeepPicar: A Low-cost Deep Neural Network-based Autonomous Car
We present DeepPicar, a low-cost deep neural network based autonomous car
platform. DeepPicar is a small scale replication of a real self-driving car
called DAVE-2 by NVIDIA. DAVE-2 uses a deep convolutional neural network (CNN),
which takes images from a front-facing camera as input and produces car
steering angles as output. DeepPicar uses the same network architecture---9
layers, 27 million connections and 250K parameters---and can drive itself in
real-time using a web camera and a Raspberry Pi 3 quad-core platform. Using
DeepPicar, we analyze the Pi 3's computing capabilities to support end-to-end
deep learning based real-time control of autonomous vehicles. We also
systematically compare other contemporary embedded computing platforms using
the DeepPicar's CNN-based real-time control workload. We find that all tested
platforms, including the Pi 3, are capable of supporting the CNN-based
real-time control, from 20 Hz up to 100 Hz, depending on hardware platform.
However, we find that shared resource contention remains an important issue
that must be considered in applying CNN models on shared memory based embedded
computing platforms; we observe up to 11.6X execution time increase in the CNN
based control loop due to shared resource contention. To protect the CNN
workload, we also evaluate state-of-the-art cache partitioning and memory
bandwidth throttling techniques on the Pi 3. We find that cache partitioning is
ineffective, while memory bandwidth throttling is an effective solution.Comment: To be published as a conference paper at RTCSA 201
Exploiting Inter- and Intra-Memory Asymmetries for Data Mapping in Hybrid Tiered-Memories
Modern computing systems are embracing hybrid memory comprising of DRAM and
non-volatile memory (NVM) to combine the best properties of both memory
technologies, achieving low latency, high reliability, and high density. A
prominent characteristic of DRAM-NVM hybrid memory is that it has NVM access
latency much higher than DRAM access latency. We call this inter-memory
asymmetry. We observe that parasitic components on a long bitline are a major
source of high latency in both DRAM and NVM, and a significant factor
contributing to high-voltage operations in NVM, which impact their reliability.
We propose an architectural change, where each long bitline in DRAM and NVM is
split into two segments by an isolation transistor. One segment can be accessed
with lower latency and operating voltage than the other. By introducing tiers,
we enable non-uniform accesses within each memory type (which we call
intra-memory asymmetry), leading to performance and reliability trade-offs in
DRAM-NVM hybrid memory. We extend existing NVM-DRAM OS in three ways. First, we
exploit both inter- and intra-memory asymmetries to allocate and migrate memory
pages between the tiers in DRAM and NVM. Second, we improve the OS's page
allocation decisions by predicting the access intensity of a newly-referenced
memory page in a program and placing it to a matching tier during its initial
allocation. This minimizes page migrations during program execution, lowering
the performance overhead. Third, we propose a solution to migrate pages between
the tiers of the same memory without transferring data over the memory channel,
minimizing channel occupancy and improving performance. Our overall approach,
which we call MNEME, to enable and exploit asymmetries in DRAM-NVM hybrid
tiered memory improves both performance and reliability for both single-core

Understanding Shared Memory Bank Access Interference in Multi-Core Avionics
Deployment of multi-core platforms in safety-critical applications requires reliable estimation of worst-case response time (WCRT) for critical processes. Determination of WCRT needs to accurately estimate and measure the interferences arising from multiple processes and multiple cores. Earlier works have proposed frameworks in which CPU, shared cache, and shared memory (DRAM) interferences can be estimated using some application and platform-dependent parameters. In this work we examine a recent work in which single core equivalent (SCE) worst case execution time is used as a basis for deriving WCRT. We describe the specific requirements in an avionics context including the sharing of memory banks by multiple processes on multiple cores, and adapt the SCE framework to account for them. We present the needed adaptations to a real-time operating system to enforce the requirements, and present a methodology for validating the theoretical WCRT through measurements on the resulting platform. The work reveals that the framework indeed creates a (pessimistic) bound on the WCRT. It also discloses that the maximum interference for memory accesses does not arise when all cores share the same memory bank
MARACAS: a real-time multicore VCPU scheduling framework
This paper describes a multicore scheduling and load-balancing framework called MARACAS, to address shared cache and memory bus contention. It builds upon prior work centered around the concept of virtual CPU (VCPU) scheduling. Threads are associated with VCPUs that have periodically replenished time budgets. VCPUs are guaranteed to receive their periodic budgets even if they are migrated between cores. A load balancing algorithm ensures VCPUs are mapped to cores to fairly distribute surplus CPU cycles, after ensuring VCPU timing guarantees. MARACAS uses surplus cycles to throttle the execution of threads running on specific cores when memory contention exceeds a certain threshold. This enables threads on other cores to make better progress without interference from co-runners. Our scheduling framework features a novel memory-aware scheduling approach that uses performance counters to derive an average memory request latency. We show that latency-based memory throttling is more effective than rate-based memory access control in reducing bus contention. MARACAS also supports cache-aware scheduling and migration using page recoloring to improve performance isolation amongst VCPUs.
