    Rule-based User Characteristics Acquisition from Logs with Semantics for Personalized Web-Based Systems

    Personalization of web-based information systems based on specialized user models has become more important in order to preserve the effectiveness of their use as the amount of available content increases. We describe a user modeling approach based on automated acquisition of user behaviour and its successive rule-based evaluation and transformation into an ontological user model. We stress reusability and flexibility by introducing a novel approach to logging, which preserves the semantics of logged events. The successive analysis is driven by specialized rules, which map usage patterns to knowledge about users, stored in an ontology-based user model. We evaluate our approach via a case study using an enhanced faceted browser, which provides personalized navigation support and recommendation

    With millions of pages available on web, it has become difficult to access relevant information. One possible approach to solve this problem is web personalization. Web personalization is defined as any action that customizes the information or services provided by a web site to an individual. When personalization is applied to the semantic web it offers many advantages when compared to the traditional web because semantic web integrates semantics with the unstructured data on web so that intelligent techniques can be applied to get more efficient results. We have presented various approaches that are used for personalization in semantic web in this paper. The core of semantic web is the ontologies which are defined as explicit formalization of a shared understanding of a conceptualization. We exploit the machine understandable feature of semantic web to device strategies that perform effective personalization such that the results returned to the user are more relevant to the goal set by him. Some of the difficulties that user modeling faces are the amount of data available to create user models, the adequacy of the data, the noise within that data, and the necessity of capturing the imprecise nature of human behavior. Data mining and machine learning techniques have the ability to handle large amounts of data and to process uncertainty. These characteristics make these techniques suitable for automatic generation of user models that simulate human decision making. Up to now, the most common approach for personalization in digital libraries has been user-driven. Nevertheless, the design of efficient personalized services has to be done, at least in part, in an automatic way.     We present a novel method for instance comparison of ontological concepts with regard to personalized content presentation and/or navigation in large information spaces. We assume that comparing properties of documents which users found interesting leads to discovery of information about users' interests specifically when considering Semantic Web applications where documents or their parts are represented by ontological concepts. We employ the ontology structure and different similarity metrics for datatype and object properties and investigate reasons behind user interest in the presented content. Moreover, we propose and evaluate an approach to instance similarity computation for a particular user while also considering the user's individual preferences

    Web personalization is the process of customizing a Web site to the needs of specific users, taking advantage of the knowledge acquired from the analysis of the user\u27s navigational behavior (usage data) in correlation with other information collected in the Web context, namely, structure, content, and user profile data. Due to the explosive growth of the Web, the domain of Web personalization has gained great momentum both in the research and commercial areas. In this article we present a survey of the use of Web mining for Web personalization. More specifically, we introduce the modules that comprise a Web personalization system, emphasizing the Web usage mining module. A review of the most common methods that are used as well as technical issues that occur is given, along with a brief overview of the most popular tools and applications available from software vendors. Moreover, the most important research initiatives in the Web usage mining and personalization areas are presented

    Data linking for the Semantic Web

    By specifying that published datasets must link to other existing datasets, the 4th linked data principle ensures a Web of data and not just a set of unconnected data islands. The authors propose in this paper the term data linking to name the problem of finding equivalent resources on the Web of linked data. In order to perform data linking, many techniques were developed, finding their roots in statistics, database, natural language processing and graph theory. The authors begin this paper by providing background information and terminological clarifications related to data linking. Then a comprehensive survey over the various techniques available for data linking is provided. These techniques are classified along the three criteria of granularity, type of evidence, and source of the evidence. Finally, the authors survey eleven recent tools performing data linking and we classify them according to the surveyed techniques
