    Bankruptcy Prediction with Rough Sets

The bankruptcy prediction problem can be considered an or dinal classification problem. The classical theory of Rough Sets describes objects by discrete attributes, and does not take into account the order- ing of the attributes values. This paper proposes a modification of the Rough Set approach applicable to monotone datasets. We introduce re- spectively the concepts of monotone discernibility matrix and monotone (object) reduct. Furthermore, we use the theory of monotone discrete functions developed earlier by the first author to represent and to com- pute decision rules. In particular we use monotone extensions, decision lists and dualization to compute classification rules that cover the whole input space. The theory is applied to the bankruptcy prediction problem

    Rough analysis in lattices

An outline of an algebraie generalization of the rough set theory is presented in the paper. It is shown that the majority of the basic concepts of this theory has an immediate algebraic generalization, and that some rough set facts are true in general algebraic structures. The formalism employed is that of lattice theory. New concepts of rough order, approximation space and rough (quantitative) approximation space are introduced and investigated. It is shown that the original Pawlak's theory of rough sets and information systems is a model of this general approach

Impact Assessment of Qualitative Policy Scenarios; A Comparative Case Study on Land Use in Sicily

The purpose of this paper is to offer a contribution to the study of integrated assessment procedures for evaluating the effectiveness of agri-environmental policy strategies. While in the past the studies in this context have typically concentrated on the contents of methods in isolation, there is a growing trend towards methodological perspectives that support the linking of such methods. The focus here is on the combination of discrete multicriteria approaches used for handling qualitative information in a sequence of steps: the regime method, the evamix method and rough-set analysis. The first two methods will be used to obtain a ranking of four alternative scenarios of agri-environmental policies in a selected area of study, in this case, Sicily. The results obtained are discussed and re-analysed by using the rough-set approach as a recent meta-analytical tool. Finally, the analysis findings are applied to an investigation into the potential effectiveness of agricultural policies in promoting sustainable rural development in Sicily. Š 2003, MCB UP Limite

Rough set methodology in meta-analysis - a comparative and exploratory analysis

We study the applicability of the pattern recognition methodology "rough set data analysis" (RSDA) in the field of meta analysis. We give a summary of the mathematical and statistical background and then proceed to an application of the theory to a meta analysis of empirical studies dealing with the deterrent effect introduced by Becker and Ehrlich. Results are compared with a previously devised meta regression analysis. We find that the RSDA can be used to discover information overlooked by other methods, to preprocess the data for further studying and to strengthen results previously found by other methods.Rough Data Set, RSDA, Meta Analysis, Data Mining, Pattern Recognition, Deterrence, Criminometrics
