Hybrid model using logit and nonparametric methods for predicting micro-entity failure
Following the calls from literature on bankruptcy, a parsimonious hybrid bankruptcy model is developed in this paper
by combining parametric and non-parametric approaches. To this end, the variables with the highest predictive power to
detect bankruptcy are selected using logistic regression (LR). Subsequently, alternative non-parametric methods
(Multilayer Perceptron, Rough Set, and Classification-Regression Trees) are applied, in turn, to firms classified as
either “bankrupt” or “not bankrupt”. Our findings show that hybrid models, particularly those combining LR and
Multilayer Perceptron, offer better accuracy performance and interpretability and converge faster than each method
implemented in isolation. Moreover, the authors demonstrate that the introduction of non-financial and macroeconomic
variables complement financial ratios for bankruptcy prediction
ANN for Predicting Temperature and Humidity in the Surrounding Environment
Abstract: In this research, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was developed and tested to predict temperature in the surrounding environment. A number of factors were identified that may affect temperature or humidity. Factors such as the nature of the surrounding place, proximity or distance from water surfaces, the influence of vegetation, and the level of rise or fall below sea level, among others, as input variables for the ANN model. A model based on multi-layer concept topology was developed and trained using data from several regions in the surrounding environment.
The evaluation of testing the dataset shows that the ANN model is capable of correctly predicting the temperature with 100% accuracy
Thin-Wall Machining of Light Alloys: A Review of Models and Industrial Approaches
Thin-wall parts are common in the aeronautical sector. However, their machining presents
serious challenges such as vibrations and part deflections. To deal with these challenges, di erent
approaches have been followed in recent years. This work presents the state of the art of thin-wall
light-alloy machining, analyzing the problems related to each type of thin-wall parts, exposing the
causes of both instability and deformation through analytical models, summarizing the computational
techniques used, and presenting the solutions proposed by di erent authors from an industrial point
of view. Finally, some further research lines are proposed
Neural network modelling of Abbott-Firestone roughness parameters in honing processes
In present study, three roughness parameters defined in the Abbott-Firestone or bearing area curve, Rk, Rpk and Rvk, were modelled for rough honing processes by means of artificial neural networks (ANN). Input variables were grain size and density of abrasive, pressure of abrasive stones on the workpiece's surface, tangential or rotation speed of the workpiece and linear speed of the honing head. Two strategies were considered, either use of one network for modelling the three parameters at the same time or use of three networks, one for each parameter. Overall best neural network consists of three networks, one for each roughness parameter, with one hidden layer having 25, nine and five neurons for Rk, Rpk and Rvk respectively. However, use of one network for the three roughness parameters would allow addressing an indirect model. In this case, best solution corresponds to two hidden layers having 26 and 11 neurons.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A Functional Architecture Approach to Neural Systems
The technology for the design of systems to perform extremely complex combinations of real-time functionality has developed over a long period. This technology is based on the use of a hardware architecture with a physical separation into memory and processing, and a software architecture which divides functionality into a disciplined hierarchy of software components which exchange unambiguous information. This technology experiences difficulty in design of systems to perform parallel processing, and extreme difficulty in design of systems which can heuristically change their own functionality. These limitations derive from the approach to information exchange between functional components. A design approach in which functional components can exchange ambiguous information leads to systems with the recommendation architecture which are less subject to these limitations. Biological brains have been constrained by natural pressures to adopt functional architectures with this different information exchange approach. Neural networks have not made a complete shift to use of ambiguous information, and do not address adequate management of context for ambiguous information exchange between modules. As a result such networks cannot be scaled to complex functionality. Simulations of systems with the recommendation architecture demonstrate the capability to heuristically organize to perform complex functionality
Application of Computational Intelligence Techniques to Process Industry Problems
In the last two decades there has been a large progress in the computational
intelligence research field. The fruits of the effort spent on the research in the discussed
field are powerful techniques for pattern recognition, data mining, data modelling, etc.
These techniques achieve high performance on traditional data sets like the UCI
machine learning database. Unfortunately, this kind of data sources usually represent
clean data without any problems like data outliers, missing values, feature co-linearity,
etc. common to real-life industrial data. The presence of faulty data samples can have
very harmful effects on the models, for example if presented during the training of the
models, it can either cause sub-optimal performance of the trained model or in the worst
case destroy the so far learnt knowledge of the model. For these reasons the application
of present modelling techniques to industrial problems has developed into a research
field on its own. Based on the discussion of the properties and issues of the data and the
state-of-the-art modelling techniques in the process industry, in this paper a novel
unified approach to the development of predictive models in the process industry is
presented
