    Putting Teeth into Open Architectures: Infrastructure for Reducing the Need for Retesting

    Proceedings Paper (for Acquisition Research Program)The Navy is currently implementing the open-architecture framework for developing joint interoperable systems that adapt and exploit open-system design principles and architectures. This raises concerns about how to practically achieve dependability in software-intensive systems with many possible configurations when: 1) the actual configuration of the system is subject to frequent and possibly rapid change, and 2) the environment of typical reusable subsystems is variable and unpredictable. Our preliminary investigations indicate that current methods for achieving dependability in open architectures are insufficient. Conventional methods for testing are suited for stovepipe systems and depend strongly on the assumptions that the environment of a typical system is fixed and known in detail to the quality-assurance team at test and evaluation time. This paper outlines new approaches to quality assurance and testing that are better suited for providing affordable reliability in open architectures, and explains some of the additional technical features that an Open Architecture must have in order to become a Dependable Open Architecture.Naval Postgraduate School Acquisition Research ProgramApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

February 8-11, 2016.The PhD Symposium was a very good opportunity for the young researchers to share information and knowledge, to present their current research, and to discuss topics with other students in order to look for synergies and common research topics. The idea was very successful and the assessment made by the PhD Student was very good.     RepComp - replicated software components for improved performance

    Trabalho apresentado no âmbito do Mestrado em Engenharia Informática, como requisito parcial para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaThe current trend of evolution in CPU architectures favours increasing the number of processing cores in lieu of improving the clock speed of an individual core. While improving clock rates automatically benefits any software executing on that processor, the same is not valid for adding new cores. To take advantage of an increased number of cores, software must include explicit support for parallel execution. This work explores a solution based on diverse replication which allows applications to transparently explore parallel processing power: macro-components. Applications typically make use of components with well-defined interfaces that have a number of possible underlying implementations with different characteristic. A macro-component is a component which encloses several of these implementations while offering the same interface as a regular implementation. Inside the macro-component,the implementations are used as replicas, and used to process any incoming operations. Using the best replica for each incoming operation, the macro-component is able to improve global performance. This dissertation provides an initial research on the use of these macro-components,detailing the technical challenges faced and proposing a design for the macro-component support system. Additionally, an implementation and subsequent validation of the proposed system are presented. These examples show that macro-components can achieve improved performance versus simple component implementations

    NASA space station automation: AI-based technology review

Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation technologies are planned to enhance crew safety through reduced need for EVA, increase crew productivity through the reduction of routine operations, increase space station autonomy, and augment space station capability through the use of teleoperation and robotics. AI technology will also be developed for the servicing of satellites at the Space Station, system monitoring and diagnosis, space manufacturing, and the assembly of large space structures

    3D IC optimal layout design. A parallel and distributed topological approach

    The task of 3D ICs layout design involves the assembly of millions of components taking into account many different requirements and constraints such as topological, wiring or manufacturability ones. It is a NP-hard problem that requires new non-deterministic and heuristic algorithms. Considering the time complexity, the commonly applied Fiduccia-Mattheyses partitioning algorithm is superior to any other local search method. Nevertheless, it can often miss to reach a quasi-optimal solution in 3D spaces. The presented approach uses an original 3D layout graph partitioning heuristics implemented with use of the extremal optimization method. The goal is to minimize the total wire-length in the chip. In order to improve the time complexity a parallel and distributed Java implementation is applied. Inside one Java Virtual Machine separate optimization algorithms are executed by independent threads.     Qserv: a distributed shared-nothing database for the LSST catalog

    The LSST project will provide public access to a database catalog that, in its final year, is estimated to include 26 billion stars and galaxies in dozens of trillion detections in multiple petabytes. Because we are not aware of an existing open-source database implementation that has been demonstrated to efficiently satisfy astronomers' spatial self-joining and cross-matching queries at this scale, we have implemented Qserv, a distributed shared-nothing SQL database query system. To speed development, Qserv relies on two successful open-source software packages: the MySQL RDBMS and the Xrootd distributed file system. We describe Qserv's design, architecture, and ability to scale to LSST's data requirements. We illustrate its potential with test results on a 150-node cluster using 55 billion rows and 30 terabytes of simulated data. These results demonstrate the soundness of Qserv's approach and the scale it achieves on today's hardware

    Virtual Runtime Application Partitions for Resource Management in Massively Parallel Architectures

    This thesis presents a novel design paradigm, called Virtual Runtime Application Partitions (VRAP), to judiciously utilize the on-chip resources. As the dark silicon era approaches, where the power considerations will allow only a fraction chip to be powered on, judicious resource management will become a key consideration in future designs. Most of the works on resource management treat only the physical components (i.e. computation, communication, and memory blocks) as resources and manipulate the component to application mapping to optimize various parameters (e.g. energy efficiency). To further enhance the optimization potential, in addition to the physical resources we propose to manipulate abstract resources (i.e. voltage/frequency operating point, the fault-tolerance strength, the degree of parallelism, and the configuration architecture). The proposed framework (i.e. VRAP) encapsulates methods, algorithms, and hardware blocks to provide each application with the abstract resources tailored to its needs. To test the efficacy of this concept, we have developed three distinct self adaptive environments: (i) Private Operating Environment (POE), (ii) Private Reliability Environment (PRE), and (iii) Private Configuration Environment (PCE) that collectively ensure that each application meets its deadlines using minimal platform resources. In this work several novel architectural enhancements, algorithms and policies are presented to realize the virtual runtime application partitions efficiently. Considering the future design trends, we have chosen Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) and Network on Chips (NoCs) to test the feasibility of our approach. Specifically, we have chosen Dynamically Reconfigurable Resource Array (DRRA) and McNoC as the representative CGRA and NoC platforms. The proposed techniques are compared and evaluated using a variety of quantitative experiments. Synthesis and simulation results demonstrate VRAP significantly enhances the energy and power efficiency compared to state of the art.Siirretty Doriast

    An Approach to Data Analysis in 5G Networks

    5G networks expect to provide significant advances in network management compared to traditional mobile infrastructures by leveraging intelligence capabilities such as data analysis, prediction, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. The key idea behind these actions is to facilitate the decision-making process in order to solve or mitigate common network problems in a dynamic and proactive way. In this context, this paper presents the design of Self-Organized Network Management in Virtualized and Software Defined Networks (SELFNET) Analyzer Module, which main objective is to identify suspicious or unexpected situations based on metrics provided by different network components and sensors. The SELFNET Analyzer Module provides a modular architecture driven by use cases where analytic functions can be easily extended. This paper also proposes the data specification to define the data inputs to be taking into account in diagnosis process.
