    Geometrical tests of cosmological models. II. Calibration of rotational widths and disc scaling relations

    This series of papers is dedicated to a new technique to select galaxies that can act as standard rods and standard candles in order to perform geometrical tests on large samples of high redshift galaxies to constrain different cosmological parameters. The goals of this paper are (1) to compare different rotation indicators in order to understand the relation between rotation velocities extracted from observations of the Halpha line and the [OII]3727 line, and (2) determine the scaling relations between physical size, surface brightness and magnitude of galaxies and their rotation velocity using the SFI++, a large catalog of nearby galaxies observed at I-band. A good correlation is observed between the rotation curve-derived velocities of the Halpha and [OII] observations, as well as between those calculated from velocity histograms, justifying the direct comparison of velocities measured from Halpha rotation curves in nearby galaxies and from [OII] line widths at higher redshifts. To provide calibration for the geometrical tests, we give expressions for the different scaling relations between properties of galaxies (size, surface brightness, magnitude) and their rotation speeds. Apart from the Tully-Fisher relation, we derive the size-rotation velocity and surface brightness-rotation velocity relations with unprecedentedly small scatters. We show how the best size-rotation velocity relation is derived when size is estimated not from disc scale lengths but from the isophotal diameter r23.5, once these have been corrected for inclination and extinction effects.Comment: 14 pages and 10 figures.     This paper tests three possible explanations for why firms adopt job rotation: employee learning (rotation makes employees more versatile), employer learning (through rotation, employers learn more about individual workers' strengths), and employee motivation (rotation mitigates boredom). Whereas previous studies have examined either establishment characteristics or a single firm's personnel records, this study merges information from a detailed survey of Danish private sector firms with linked employer-employee panel data, allowing firm characteristics, work force characteristics, and firms' human resource management practices to be included as explanatory variables. The results reject the employee motivation hypothesis, but support the employee learning and, especially, the employer learning hypotheses. Firms allocating more resources to training were more likely to rotate workers; rotation schemes were more common in less hierarchical firms and in firms with shorter average employee tenure; and both firm growth rates and firms' use of nation-wide recruitment were positively associated with rotation schemes.Job rotation;

    The structure and kinematics of the the Galaxy thin gaseous disc outside the solar orbit

    The rotation curve of the Galaxy is generally thought to be flat. However, using radial velocities from interstellar molecular clouds, which is common in rotation curve determination, seems to be incorrect and may lead to incorrectly inferring that the rotation curve is flat indeed. Tests basing on photometric and spectral observations of bright stars may be misleading. The rotation tracers (OB stars) are affected by motions around local gravity centers and pulsation effects seen in such early type objects. To get rid of the latter a lot of observing work must be involved. We introduce a method of studying the kinematics of the thin disc of our Galaxy outside the solar orbit in a way that avoids these problems. We propose a test based on observations of interstellar CaII H and K lines that determines both radial velocities and distances. We implemented the test using stellar spectra of thin disc stars at galactic longitudes of 135{\degr} and 180{\degr}. Using this method, we constructed the rotation curve of the thin disc of the Galaxy. The test leads to the obvious conclusion that the rotation curve of the thin gaseous galactic disk, represented by the CaII lines, is Keplerian outside the solar orbit rather than flat.Comment: 33 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2015.
