    Large-scale Biometrics Deployment in Europe: Identifying Challenges and Threats

    With large-scale biometrics deployment in the EU still in its infancy and with stakeholders racing to position themselves in view of the lucrative market that is forecasted, a study to identify challenges and threats that need to be dealt with was launched. This is the result: a report on Biometrics large-scale Deployment in Europe. The report tackles three main issues namely, the status, security / privacy and testing / certification processes. A survey was launched so as to help reveal the actual status of Biometrics large-scale Deployment initiatives in EU. The main outcome of the survey was that an open dissemination of implementation results policy is needed mainly on deployment plans, strategies, barriers and best practices. The security/ privacy challenges study identified a number of issues, the most important of which were related to proportionality and compliance to the existing regulatory framework while at the same time it revealed an important number of related actions aiming at ensuring both data security and privacy. The aim of the Bio Testing Europe study was double: to identify and collect comparable and certified results under different technologies, vendors and environments situations and to feed in this information to animate discussion among the members of a European network which would enhance the European testing and certification capacity. The study presents an integrated picture of the identified issues as well as a number of recommendations.     Measuring the Impacts of Smart Retailing Technologies Pilot Implementation – Proposal Framework

    Smart retailing technologies are transforming retailers’ operations, consumer shopping experiences, and perceptions about retailers. These technologies are becoming increasingly numerous and may have different interfaces and ways of implementation. Based on the literature review, this study develops a framework to measure the impacts of implementing non-store-based and store-based smart retailing technology pilot projects, with appropriate metrics based on brand leadership, market performance and word-of-mouth. The proposed method is based on a survey distributed to a sample of customers and control groups, using an experimental Latin square design that controls the effects of extraneous variables. With this methodology, different interfaces can be evaluated in the non-store-based pilot projects, and different locations in the store-based pilot projects implementation, controlling extraneous variables such as seasonality, customer profiles and store-specific characteristics. Finally, the academic and managerial contributions to retailers, consumers and technology companies are highlighted, as well as limitations and avenues for future research

    Typo handling in searching of Quran verse based on phonetic similarities

    The Quran search system is a search system that was built to make it easier for Indonesians to find a verse with text by Indonesian pronunciation, this is a solution for users who have difficulty writing or typing Arabic characters. Quran search system with phonetic similarity can make it easier for Indonesian Muslims to find a particular verse.  Lafzi was one of the systems that developed the search, then Lafzi was further developed under the name Lafzi+. The Lafzi+ system can handle searches with typo queries but there are still fewer variations regarding typing error types. In this research Lafzi++, an improvement from previous development to handle typographical error types was carried out by applying typo correction using the autocomplete method to correct incorrect queries and Damerau Levenshtein distance to calculate the edit distance, so that the system can provide query suggestions when a user mistypes a search, either in the form of substitution, insertion, deletion, or transposition. Users can also search easily because they use Latin characters according to pronunciation in Indonesian. Based on the evaluation results it is known that the system can be better developed, this can be seen from the accuracy value in each query that is tested can surpass the accuracy of the previous system, by getting the highest recall of 96.20% and the highest Mean Average Precision (MAP) reaching 90.69%. The Lafzi++ system can improve the previous system

    Correlation of stress and physiological data

    Stress is a mental pressure caused by demanding circumstances, tasks or environment that we live in our daily life. Long-term stress like Chronic stress has a longer negative emotional effect and in a long-term uncontrolled situation, it could damage health and prone to the huge risk of mental and cardiac diseases. Workplace stress is one of the major stress factors that affect the young working people. According to the World Organization for Stress and the American Institute of Stress, the number of patients with stressrelated diseases has been increasing at a drastic rate. Among all people, adults and working people have been reported as being highly affected by stress diseases. In this thesis, the stress of computer programmers is researched with the participants from software development professionals and students at the university. Their physiological data is examined to find the existence of such features that can signal the different stress levels which can be useful in developing stress aware systems. The physiological activity data is collected using an existing computer peripheral like mouse and keyboards whereas a popular statistical analysis method called Pearson correlation is used to inspect the correlation between stress and physiological data. Such features can be used to model a stress classifier in future which can help in the prediction of stress and provide assistance in mental and psychological well-being. As a process of organizing and conducting the research successfully, the research proceeds through a series of phases like planning, research on related fields, design an experiment, data collection and finally data analysis and interpreting the result
