This research explored a new direction of improving collaborative design by performance measurement. More specifically, a novel 3-dimensional performance measurement model is developed and the purpose of this model is to help project managers improve team collaboration by indicating strengths and weaknesses of team members during the project development process. Considering the complexity of collaborative design work, a multiple criteria model is proposed to reflect the design dynamics, which highlights five performance indicators: efficiency, effectiveness, collaboration, management skills and innovation. These five indicators are mostly influenced by role-based performance measurement criteria (the second dimension). Design and development process (time) is also considered (the third dimension). This 3D model allows all involved design participants to measure work performance at any time during the product development process. In order to develop this model, the role-based task analysis and industrial survey methods were utilized. Three groups of role-based product design and development performance measurement criteria were identified for measuring design performance of the top managers, middle managers and individual designers in a project team. A 3-dimensional performance measurement method was proposed to calculate final performance scores from a performance measurement matrix. The proposed model was evaluated as a tool which can support project managers to reduce potential design and collaboration risks and increase confidence in decision-making process. The model has been discussed on implementing in a web-based application for measuring design performance throughout the product design and development proces

According to the current great interest concerning large-scale metrology applications in many different fields of manufacturing industry, technologies and techniques for dimensional measurement have recently shown a substantial improvement. Ease-of-use, logistic and economic issues, as well as metrological performance are assuming a more and more important role among system requirements. This paper describes the architecture and the working principles of a novel infrared (IR) optical-based system, designed to perform low-cost and easy indoor coordinate measurements of large-size objects. The system consists of a distributed network-based layout, whose modularity allows fitting differently sized and shaped working volumes by adequately increasing the number of sensing units. Differently from existing spatially distributed metrological instruments, the remote sensor devices are intended to provide embedded data elaboration capabilities, in order to share the overall computational load. The overall system functionalities, including distributed layout configuration, network self-calibration, 3D point localization, and measurement data elaboration, are discussed. A preliminary metrological characterization of system performance, based on experimental testing, is also presente

This study aims to investigate the effect of strategic performance measurement system on managerial performance that is directly tested through four variables; job relevant information, role ambiguty, role conflict and role overload. This study used the perspec tive of goal setting theory and role theory in explaining inter-variable relationship. Data collected in this survey was primary data from 329 functional managers of state-owned transportation companies under the auspices of Ministry of State Owned Enterprise. Samples were taken using stratified random sampling. Of 329 questionnaires, 264 were used in this research with respon rate of 80,55%. Da ta analysis was conducted using structural equation models in LISREL 8,5. The result of statistictic test indicated that strategic performance measurement system was, but not significantly, associated with managerial performance. Further findings indicated that strate gic performance measurement system was significantly associated with job relevant information, but no association was found with role ambiguity. However, strategic performance measurement system was significantly assosiated with role conflict and role overload. Furthermore, the result of research test indicated that job relevant information was not associated with role ambiguty, role conflict and role overload, but significantly associated with managerial performance. Based on the result, it can be conferred that role ambiguity was positively related and had a significant impact on managerial performance.  In the other hand, role conflict and role overload are positvely but not significantly assosiated with managerial performance. The result of the role test of mediating variables has shown that job relevant information, role ambiguity, role conflict and role overload significantly mediated the effect of strategic performance measurement system toward managerial performance.

Range-based techniques for discovering optimality and analyzing scaling relationships in neuromechanical systems

In this paper, a method for decoupling the neuromuscular function of a set of limbs from the role morphology plays in regulating the performance of an activity is introduced. This method is based on two previous methods: the rescaled range analysis specific to time series data, and the use of scaling laws. A review of the literature suggests that limb geometry can either facilitate or constrain performance as measured experimentally. Whether limb geometry is facilitatory or acts as a constraint depends on the size differential between arm morphology and the underlying muscle. "Changes in size and shape" are theoretically extrapolations of morphological geometry to other members of a population or species, to other species, or to technological manipulations of an individual via prosthetic devices. Three datasets are analyzed using the range-based method and a Monte-Carlo simulation, and are used to test the various ways of executing this analysis. It was found that when performance is kept stable but limb size and shape is scaled by a factor of .25, the greatest gain in performance results. It was also found that introducing force-based perturbations results in 'shifts' in the body geometry/performance relationship. While results such as this could be interpreted as a statistical artifact, the non-linear rise within a measurement class and linear decrease between measurement classes suggests an effect of scale in the optimality of this relationship. Overall, range-based techniques allow for the simulation and modeling of myriad changes in phenotype that result from biological and technological manipulation

The literature on performance measurement system indicates that the company should consider to increase the diversity of performance measures one of which is to merge/combine the size of the financial and non-financial performance. The purpose of this paper is to test whether the merge/combine size and non-financial performance can affect the performance of managerial finance. And how is the effect of the mediating role of procedural fairness, role clarity and organizational commitment in the relationship. Based on a sample of 103 bank managers of Bank in Riau, the study found that there was a significant relationship between performance measurement systems (financial and non-financial) and managerial performance are mediated by procedural fairness and organizational commitment. However, further analysis proved that the existence of a significant relationship between performance measurement systems (financial and non-financial) and managerial performance are mediated by role clarity

Designing performance measurement systems in health care: multiple organizational players and their interaction in the case of the prevention services in tuscany.

The designing of a performance measurement system usually involves several players, the number and the role of the players in building new performance measurement tools depending on the features affecting the type of organization. Among them, health care units can be considered as some of the most complex to manage (“Running even the most complicated corporation must sometimes seem like child’s play compared to trying to manage almost any hospital.”, Mintzberg and Glouberman 2001), being based on professionals’ activity. Professionals play a wide span of autonomy and they can resist towards changes and control systems that do not involve them, thus implicating their deep involvement in designing and implementing effective management control devices. Due to this characteristic, the decision makers about measurement systems in public health are not only the politics and top managers at different levels (national, regional and local) but also the professionals at their level. But which are the roles of these players at their organizational levels? Do they play a different role in desing and implementation of a performance measurement system? And which are the interactions among them? The aim of this paper is to answer at these questions through the experience of the design of the so-called Prodotti Finiti system for measuring output and performance of the prevention services in Tuscan health care system. The necessity of this performance measurement system rises from a lack that regards the primary care and the collective prevention services: while in the hospital services the DRGs system has been developed and used as a shared tool to measure output and performance, in the primary care and the collective prevention services there is no shared and uniform way to measure the services provided. The idea of using the Prodotti Finiti (Final Products) as objects of performance measurement of prevention services was born at a local level in 1998; then, in 2006, it was spread to all LHAs by the regional level in order to have a uniform and shared system. The players involved in this initiative have been the local and regional levels as the promoter of the introduction of the Prodotti Finiti system and the groups of professionals as the decision-makers of what products and what elements should have to be measured. In the experience of the design of this system the professionals seem to have been the strongest decisional level: they have decided what were the objects to be measured. The political levels (regionals and local) could choose to limit the analysis to some products (as key performance areas) or to some particular elements of the products but these were second hand choices because strictly linked to the assumptions and the decisions already made by professionals. Although the choice of involving professionals in the design of the measurement system is fundamental for the consensus, it could lead to a limited power of the other decision makers, so confirming the strenght of professionals’ power in designing performance measurement systems in health care organizations.performance measurement, public health, multiple players

Impact of Technological Innovation Capabilities on the Market Value of Firms

In the era of globalisation and with the advent of knowledge economies, organisational innovation has assumed a critical role in enhancing economic performance of firms. Proponents of the Resource Based View of the firm and its more recent extensions such as the Knowledge Based View and Dynamic Capabilities Theory have suggested that generation, diffusion and application of organisational knowledge could be the source of sustained competitive advantage and superior performance of firms. While there is near unanimity in accepting the vital role of innovation in a firm\u27s performance, consensus on what constitutes organisational innovation and how to measure it has proven to be elusive so far. Most previous research in this area has conceptualised innovation through one or more dimensions of a firm\u27s innovative capability using R&D of a firm only. The measurement of the construct has thus reflected this narrow conceptualisation with a single measure of R&D expenditure being the most often used proxy. This study utilises a broader de¯nition of organisational innovation capabilities that includes the generation, dissemination and strength of innovative activity in a firm. The unique features of this study is that it uses multiple indicators of a firm\u27s innovation pro¯le along with lagged measures of market value using fixed effects panel data analysis

This study explores managerial behavioral responses associated with performance measurement system. Design of performance measurement system is investigated financial and non-financial measures related to the four perspectives of Balanced Scorecard (BSC). This paper examines whether a role conflict and procedural fairness affect the relationship between performance measure and managerial performance. Based on a sample of 67 managers of regional Bank in Pekanbaru, the results from a structural model tested using Partial Least Squares indicate a relationship between performance measurement system and managerial performance is mediated by a role of conflict. However, this study not supported that procedural fairness mediated relationship between performance measurement system and managerial performance. These results may have important theoretical and practical implications. Keywords: performance measurement system, role conflict, procedural fairness, managerial performance---Penelitian ini mengamati respon perilaku manajerial dihubungkan dengan sistem pengukuran kinerja.
