Three-dimensional free vibration analysis of thermally loaded fgm sandwich plates

    Get PDF
Using the finite element code ABAQUS and the user-defined material utilities UMAT and UMATHT, a solid brick graded finite element is developed for three-dimensional (3D) modeling of free vibrations of thermally loaded functionally gradient material (FGM) sandwich plates. The mechanical and thermal material properties of the FGM sandwich plates are assumed to vary gradually in the thickness direction, according to a power-law fraction distribution. Benchmark problems are firstly considered to assess the performance and accuracy of the proposed 3D graded finite element. Comparisons with the reference solutions revealed high efficiency and good capabilities of the developed element for the 3D simulations of thermomechanical and vibration responses of FGM sandwich plates. Some parametric studies are carried out for the frequency analysis by varying the volume fraction profile and the temperature distribution across the plate thickness

Recent Advances in Theoretical and Computational Modeling of Composite Materials and Structures

The advancement in manufacturing technology and scientific research has improved the development of enhanced composite materials with tailored properties depending on their design requirements in many engineering fields, as well as in thermal and energy management. Some representative examples of advanced materials in many smart applications and complex structures rely on laminated composites, functionally graded materials (FGMs), and carbon-based constituents, primarily carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene sheets or nanoplatelets, because of their remarkable mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and high permeability. For such materials, experimental tests usually require a large economical effort because of the complex nature of each constituent, together with many environmental, geometrical and or mechanical uncertainties of non-conventional specimens. At the same time, the theoretical and/or computational approaches represent a valid alternative for designing complex manufacts with more flexibility. In such a context, the development of advanced theoretical and computational models for composite materials and structures is a subject of active research, as explored here for a large variety of structural members, involving the static, dynamic, buckling, and damage/fracturing problems at different scales

Quasi-3D Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Theory for the Free Vibration Study of Honeycomb Microplates with Graphene Nanoplatelets-Reinforced Epoxy Skins

    Get PDF
A novel quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory (QHSDT) with five unknowns is here employed, together with the Hamilton's principle and the modified couple stress theory (MCST) to analyze the vibrational behavior of rectangular micro-scale sandwich plates resting on a visco-Pasternak foundation. The sandwich structure features a Nomex or Glass phenolic honeycomb core, and two composite face sheets reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs). The effective properties of both face sheets are evaluated by means of the Halpin-Tsai and extended rule of mixture (ERM) micromechanical schemes. The governing equations of the problem are derived by applying the Hamilton's principle, whose solutions are determined theoretically according to a classical Navier-type procedure. A parametric study checks for the effect of different material properties, length-scale parameters, foundation parameters and geometrical properties of the honeycomb cells, and the reinforcing GPLs, on the vibration response of the layered structure, which can be of great interest for many modern engineering applications and their optimization design

Finite element model for vibration and buckling of functionally graded sandwich beams based on a refined shear deformation theory

Finite element model for vibration and buckling of functionally graded sandwich beams based on a refined shear deformation theory is presented. The core of sandwich beam is fully metal or ceramic and skins are composed of a functionally graded material across the depth. Governing equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. Effects of power-law index, span-to-height ratio, core thickness and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies, critical buckling loads and load–frequency curves of sandwich beams are discussed. Numerical results show that the above-mentioned effects play very important role on the vibration and buckling analysis of functionally graded sandwich beams

Forced vibration characteristics of embedded graphene oxide powder reinforced metal foam nanocomposite plate in thermal environment

Abstract Dynamic behavior of a new class of nanocomposites consisted of metal foam as matrix and graphene oxide powders as reinforcement is presented in this study in the framework of forced vibration. Graphene oxide powders are dispersed through the thickness of a plate made from metal foam material according to four various functionally graded patterns on the basis of the Halpin-Tsai micromechanical homogenization method. Also, three kinds of porosity distributions including two symmetric and one uniform patterns are considered for the metal foam matrix. As external effects, the plate is rested on the Winkler-Pasternak substrate and under uniform thermal and transverse dynamic loadings. By an incorporation of the refined higher order plate theory and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of the dynamically loaded graphene oxide powder reinforced metal foam nanocomposite plate are derived and then solved with Galerkin exact solution method to achieve the resonance frequencies and dynamic deflections of the structure. Moreover, the influence of different boundary conditions is taken into account. The results indicate that the forced vibrational response of the graphene oxide powder strengthened metal foam nanocomposite plate is dramatically dependent on various parameters such as graphene oxide powders' weight fraction, different boundary conditions, various porosity distributions, foundation parameters and temperature change of uniform thermal loading

In this work, buckling responses of functionally graded single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) reinforced composite plates with temperature dependent material properties are investigated. The effective material properties of the composite plates are obtained using simple rule of mixture by introducing the CNT efficiency parameter under different thermal environment. In the present analysis, a suitable finite element model of the SWCNT reinforced composite plate is developed using ANSYS parametric design language code in ANSYS environment using Block-Lancoz’s method. An eight noded serendipity shell element (SHELL281) has been used for the discretisation of the developed simulation model from the ANSYS library. The buckling responses of the SWCNT composite plate have been obtained and verified with those of the available published results. The non-dimensional critical buckling load parameters under uniaxial compression, biaxial compression and biaxial compression and tension have been obtained by varying different parameters like, CNT volume fraction, temperature, thickness ratio and support conditions. Finally, the detailed parametric study has been carried out to reveal the influence of different design parameters on the buckling responses through the simulation study

A new hyperbolic-polynomial higher-order elasticity theory for mechanics of thick FGM beams with imperfection in the material composition

    Get PDF
A drawback to the material composition of thick functionally graded materials (FGM) beams is checked out in this research in conjunction with a novel hyperbolic-polynomial higher-order elasticity beam theory (HPET). The proposed beam model consists of a novel shape function for the distribution of shear stress deformation in the transverse coordinate. The beam theory also incorporates the stretching effect to present an indirect effect of thickness variations. As a result of compounding the proposed beam model in linear Lagrangian strains and variational of energy, the system of equations is obtained. The Galerkin method is here expanded for several edge conditions to obtain elastic critical buckling values. First, the importance of the higher-order beam theory, as well as stretching effect, is assessed in assorted tabulated comparisons. Next, with validations based on the existing and open literature, the proposed shape function is evaluated to consider the desired accuracy. Some comparative graphs by means of well-known shape functions are plotted. These comparisons reveal a very good compliance. In the final section of the paper, based on an inappropriate mixture of the SUS304 and Si3C4 as the first type of FGM beam (Beam-I) and, Al and Al2O3 as the second type (Beam-II), the results are pictured while the beam is kept in four states, clamped–clamped (C–C), pinned–pinned (S–S), clamped-pinned (C–S) and in particular cantilever (C–F). We found that the defect impresses markedly an FGM beam with boundary conditions with lower degrees of freedom
