Conjunctive Query Answering for the Description Logic SHIQ
Conjunctive queries play an important role as an expressive query language
for Description Logics (DLs). Although modern DLs usually provide for
transitive roles, conjunctive query answering over DL knowledge bases is only
poorly understood if transitive roles are admitted in the query. In this paper,
we consider unions of conjunctive queries over knowledge bases formulated in
the prominent DL SHIQ and allow transitive roles in both the query and the
knowledge base. We show decidability of query answering in this setting and
establish two tight complexity bounds: regarding combined complexity, we prove
that there is a deterministic algorithm for query answering that needs time
single exponential in the size of the KB and double exponential in the size of
the query, which is optimal. Regarding data complexity, we prove containment in
co-NP
Equality-friendly well-founded semantics and applications to description logics
We tackle the problem of deļ¬ning a well-founded semantics (WFS) for Datalog rules with existentially quantiļ¬ed variables in their heads and nega- tions in their bodies. In particular, we provide a WFS for the recent DatalogĀ± family of ontology languages, which covers several important description logics (DLs). To do so, we generalize DatalogĀ± by non-stratiļ¬ed nonmonotonic nega- tion in rule bodies, and we deļ¬ne a WFS for this generalization via guarded ļ¬xed point logic. We refer to this approach as equality-friendly WFS, since it has the advantage that it does not make the unique name assumption (UNA); this brings it close to OWL and its proļ¬les as well as typical DLs, which also do not make the UNA. We prove that for guarded DatalogĀ± with negation under the equality- friendly WFS, conjunctive query answering is decidable, and we provide precise complexity results for this problem. From these results, we obtain precise deļ¬- nitions of the standard WFS extensions of EL and of members of the DL-Lite family, as well as corresponding complexity results for query answering
Unification in the Description Logic EL
The Description Logic EL has recently drawn considerable attention since, on
the one hand, important inference problems such as the subsumption problem are
polynomial. On the other hand, EL is used to define large biomedical
ontologies. Unification in Description Logics has been proposed as a novel
inference service that can, for example, be used to detect redundancies in
ontologies. The main result of this paper is that unification in EL is
decidable. More precisely, EL-unification is NP-complete, and thus has the same
complexity as EL-matching. We also show that, w.r.t. the unification type, EL
is less well-behaved: it is of type zero, which in particular implies that
there are unification problems that have no finite complete set of unifiers.Comment: 31page
Temporal Conjunctive Queries in Expressive DLs with Non-simple Roles
In Ontology-Based Data Access (OBDA), user queries are evaluated over a set of facts under the open world assumption, while taking into account background knowledge given in the form of a Description Logic (DL) ontology. Motivated by situation awareness applications, temporal conjunctive queries (TCQs) have recently been proposed as a useful extension of traditional OBDA to support the processing of temporal information. This paper extends the existing complexity analysis of TCQ entailment to very expressive DLs underlying the OWL 2 standard, and in contrast to previous work also allows for queries containing transitive roles. This is an extended version of the paper āTemporal Conjunctive Queries in Expressive Description Logics with Transitive Rolesā, published in the Proceedings of the 28th Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AIā15)
