    Kriging Models That Are Robust With Respect to Simulation Errors

    In the field of the Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments (DACE) meta-models are used to approximate time-consuming simulations. These simulations often contain simulation-model errors in the output variables. In the construction of meta-models, these errors are often ignored. Simulation-model errors may be magnified by the meta-model. Therefore, in this paper, we study the construction of Kriging models that are robust with respect to simulation-model errors. We introduce a robustness criterion, to quantify the robustness of a Kriging model. Based on this robustness criterion, two new methods to find robust Kriging models are introduced. We illustrate these methods with the approximation of the Six-hump camel back function and a real life example. Furthermore, we validate the two methods by simulating artificial perturbations.     State-dependent Kalman filters for robust engine control

    Vehicle emissions variations impose significant challenges to the automotive industry. In these simulation studies, nonlinear estimation techniques based on state-dependent and extended Kalman filtering are developed for spark ignition engines to enhance robustness of the feedforward fuel controllers to changes in nominal system parameters and measurement errors. A model-based approach is used to derive the optimal filters. Numerical simulations indicate the superiority of estimation-based approaches to enhance robustness of in-cylinder air estimation which directly contributes to the precision of engine exhaust air-fuel ratio and, consequently the consistency of the tailpipe emissions.     A linear time-invariant model for a vector-controlled two-phase stepping motor

    Recent research on stepping motors concerns intelligent motion control algorithms such as vector - and sensorless control. Sensorless control is commonly based on a motor model. For stepping motors, this model is highly non-linear, resulting in high computational cost. In this paper it is shown that the motor model can be transformed into a linear model, if the stepping motor is controlled by a vector-control algorithm. The linear model is validated by simulations and sensitivity analysis proves the robustness of the model

    Linear motor motion control using a learning feedforward controller

    The design and realization of an online learning motion controller for a linear motor is presented, and its usefulness is evaluated. The controller consists of two components: (1) a model-based feedback component, and (2) a learning feedforward component. The feedback component is designed on the basis of a simple second-order linear model, which is known to have structural errors. In the design, an emphasis is placed on robustness. The learning feedforward component is a neural-network-based controller, comprised of a one-hidden-layer structure with second-order B-spline basis functions. Simulations and experimental evaluations show that, with little effort, a high-performance motion system can be obtained with this approach

    Shaping Robust System through Evolution

    Biological functions are generated as a result of developmental dynamics that form phenotypes governed by genotypes. The dynamical system for development is shaped through genetic evolution following natural selection based on the fitness of the phenotype. Here we study how this dynamical system is robust to noise during development and to genetic change by mutation. We adopt a simplified transcription regulation network model to govern gene expression, which gives a fitness function. Through simulations of the network that undergoes mutation and selection, we show that a certain level of noise in gene expression is required for the network to acquire both types of robustness. The results reveal how the noise that cells encounter during development shapes any network's robustness, not only to noise but also to mutations. We also establish a relationship between developmental and mutational robustness through phenotypic variances caused by genetic variation and epigenetic noise. A universal relationship between the two variances is derived, akin to the fluctuation-dissipation relationship known in physics

    Adaptive model for recommendation of news

    Most news recommender systems try to identify users' interests and news' attributes and use them to obtain recommendations. Here we propose an adaptive model which combines similarities in users' rating patterns with epidemic-like spreading of news on an evolving network. We study the model by computer agent-based simulations, measure its performance and discuss its robustness against bias and malicious behavior. Subject to the approval fraction of news recommended, the proposed model outperforms the widely adopted recommendation of news according to their absolute or relative popularity. This model provides a general social mechanism for recommender systems and may find its applications also in other types of recommendation.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Optimising towards robust metal forming processes

    Product improvement and cost saving have always been important goals in the metal forming\ud industry. Numerical optimisation can help to achieve these goals, but optimisation with a deterministic\ud approach will often lead to critical process settings, such that the slightest variation in e.g. material behaviour\ud will result in violation of constraints. To avoid a high scrap ratio, process robustness must be considered in the\ud optimisation model. Optimising for robustness includes Robust Manufacturing (RM) techniques, Optimisation\ud Under Uncertainty (OUU) methods and Finite Element (FEM) simulations of the processes. In this paper,\ud we review RM and OUU. Subsequently, the combination of Statistical Process Control (SPC), robust and\ud reliability based optimisation methods, and FEM-based process simulation implemented in AutoForm-Sigma\ud is presented. An automotive deep drawing application demonstrates the potential of strategies that optimise\ud towards robust metal forming processes
