    Where do human capital externalities end up?

    Recent literature has aimed at evaluating human capital externalities by estimating the effect of human capital on wages at urban level. We argue that this methodology might not identify properly human capital spillovers. We consider a general equilibrium model based on Roback (1982) where both wages and rents are simultaneously determined at the local level. We show that human capital externalities cannot be identified unless the joint effect of local human capital on both wages and rents is considered. Empirically, we study the effects of local human capital on household-level rents and individual-level wages for a sample of Italian local labour markets. Our results show a positive and robust effect of local human capital on rents. This unambiguously demonstrates that the concentration of human capital at the local level generates positive externalities. As for the relative importance of consumption and production externalities, our results suggest that the two effects have a similar impact on wages.human capital; externalities; local markets

    Backdoor Attacks and Defences on Deep Neural Networks

    Nowadays, due to the huge amount of resources required for network training, pre-trained models are commonly exploited in all kinds of deep learning tasks, like image classification, natural language processing, etc. These models are directly deployed in the real environments, or only fine-tuned on a limited set of data that are collected, for instance, from the Internet. However, a natural question arises: can we trust pre-trained models or the data downloaded from the Internet? The answer is ‘No’. An attacker can easily perform a so-called backdoor attack to hide a backdoor into a pre-trained model by poisoning the dataset used for training or indirectly releasing some poisoned data on the Internet as a bait. Such an attack is stealthy since the hidden backdoor does not affect the behaviour of the network in normal operating conditions, and the malicious behaviour being activated only when a triggering signal is presented at the network input. In this thesis, we present a general framework for backdoor attacks and defences, and overview the state-of-the-art backdoor attacks and the corresponding defences in the field image classification, by casting them in the introduced framework. By focusing on the face recognition domain, two new backdoor attacks were proposed, effective under different threat models. Finally, we design a universal method to defend against backdoor attacks, regardless of the specific attack setting, namely the poisoning strategy and the triggering signal

    High capacity image data hiding methods and robust high capacity digital audio watermarking algorithms are studied in this thesis. The main results of this work are the development of novel algorithms with state-of-the-art performance, high capacity and transparency for image data hiding and robustness, high capacity and low distortion for audio watermarking.En esta tesis se estudian y proponen diversos métodos de data hiding de imágenes y watermarking de audio de alta capacidad. Los principales resultados de este trabajo consisten en la publicación de varios algoritmos novedosos con rendimiento a la altura de los mejores métodos del estado del arte, alta capacidad y transparencia, en el caso de data hiding de imágenes, y robustez, alta capacidad y baja distorsión para el watermarking de audio.En aquesta tesi s'estudien i es proposen diversos mètodes de data hiding d'imatges i watermarking d'àudio d'alta capacitat.     Application of Medicinal Chemistry Methods on Different Classes of Drugs

    The present doctoral thesis is the result of the work carried out during the three years of my PhD scholarship at the Rome Center for Molecular Design laboratory (RCMD, Department of Chemistry and Drug Technologies, Sapienza University of Rome), under the supervision of Prof. Rino Ragno. The research activity was focused mainly on the design, optimization and application of computational strategies to derive quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR, 3-D QSAR, and COMBINE) on different molecular classes of current interest, such as: opioid receptor antagonists (OPAs), Hepatitis C Virus NS5B-Polymerase Inhibitors (NS5B-NNIs), Hystone Deacetylase Inhibitors (HDACIs), Anti- tubercular agents, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) inhibitors, HSP90 inhibitors, HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), Bovine Serum Amine Oxidase (BSAO) substrates, etc... Moreover two research periods abroad were performed: the first framed in a LLP Erasmus program collaboration, was conducted for six months at the Laboratoire d'Ingénierie et Moléculaire Pharmacologique Biochimie (LIMBP) of the Université de Lorraine Metz (France), directed by Prof. Gilbert Kirsch, and characterized by the application of organic synthesis to obtain new thienopyrimidinone derivatives as potential inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2); the second took place, for three months, at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics in Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis (MO, USA), under the supervision of Prof. Garland R. Marshall, investigating the activity profile of new Histone Deacetylases (HDACs) inhibitors by the application of the Mobility Shift Assay Technology. Main purpose of this doctoral thesis is to highlight the activities carried out in the different research projects, the applied methodologies and the obtained results. The text starts describing those studies whose results were published in scientific journals (chapters I-VI): the author decided to omit some procedural details, completely reported in the published papers, that would make the text too long, tedious and redundant; therefore readers who want to delve these aspects can also refer to Chapter XII in which is possible to read the original papers; on the contrary for studies that have not yet been published, as those characterizing the Chapters VII and VIII, discussion is adequately detailed. Chapters IX and X report the scientific activities carried out in France and in USA respectively; Chapter XI summarizes all the scientific activities accomplished during the entire PhD course, whereas Chapter XII, as mentioned, contains the published articles

    Knowledge synthesis: Animal health and welfare in organic pig production - Final Report COREPIG

    This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently exist in different countries, or might be developed. The information gathered in this review formed the basis for the subsequent development of tools for use in a HACCP based management and surveillance system for organic pig herds. These tools will assist the organic pig farmer to prevent selected pig diseases and welfare problems by monitoring and controlling the risk factors.
