An Overview of Integral Quadratic Constraints for Delayed Nonlinear and Parameter-Varying Systems

A general framework is presented for analyzing the stability and performance of nonlinear and linear parameter varying (LPV) time delayed systems. First, the input/output behavior of the time delay operator is bounded in the frequency domain by integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). A constant delay is a linear, time-invariant system and this leads to a simple, intuitive interpretation for these frequency domain constraints. This simple interpretation is used to derive new IQCs for both constant and varying delays. Second, the performance of nonlinear and LPV delayed systems is bounded using dissipation inequalities that incorporate IQCs. This step makes use of recent results that show, under mild technical conditions, that an IQC has an equivalent representation as a finite-horizon time-domain constraint. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for both class of systems

A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    Get PDF
This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers. Finally, safety of convex systems is discussed by describing popular techniques for fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control (FTC).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Semi-definite programming and functional inequalities for Distributed Parameter Systems

We study one-dimensional integral inequalities, with quadratic integrands, on bounded domains. Conditions for these inequalities to hold are formulated in terms of function matrix inequalities which must hold in the domain of integration. For the case of polynomial function matrices, sufficient conditions for positivity of the matrix inequality and, therefore, for the integral inequalities are cast as semi-definite programs. The inequalities are used to study stability of linear partial differential equations.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

Robust integrated autopilot/autothrottle design using constrained parameter optimization

A multivariable control design method based on constrained parameter optimization was applied to the design of a multiloop aircraft flight control system. Specifically, the design method is applied to the following: (1) direct synthesis of a multivariable 'inner-loop' feedback control system based on total energy control principles; (2) synthesis of speed/altitude-hold designs as 'outer-loop' feedback/feedforward control systems around the above inner loop; and (3) direct synthesis of a combined 'inner-loop' and 'outer-loop' multivariable control system. The design procedure offers a direct and structured approach for the determination of a set of controller gains that meet design specifications in closed-loop stability, command tracking performance, disturbance rejection, and limits on control activities. The presented approach may be applied to a broader class of multiloop flight control systems. Direct tradeoffs between many real design goals are rendered systematic by this method following careful problem formulation of the design objectives and constraints. Performance characteristics of the optimization design were improved over the current autopilot design on the B737-100 Transport Research Vehicle (TSRV) at the landing approach and cruise flight conditions; particularly in the areas of closed-loop damping, command responses, and control activity in the presence of turbulence

Analysis of Implicit Uncertain Systems. Part I: Theoretical Framework

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a general and powerful framework for the analysis of uncertain systems, encompassing linear fractional transformations, the behavioral approach for system theory and the integral quadratic constraint formulation. In this approach, a system is defined by implicit equations, and the central analysis question is to test for solutions of these equations. In Part I, the general properties of this formulation are developed, and computable necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a robust performance problem posed in this framework

Variance-constrained multiobjective control and filtering for nonlinear stochastic systems: A survey

    Get PDF
The multiobjective control and filtering problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with variance constraints are surveyed. First, the concepts of nonlinear stochastic systems are recalled along with the introduction of some recent advances. Then, the covariance control theory, which serves as a practical method for multi-objective control design as well as a foundation for linear system theory, is reviewed comprehensively. The multiple design requirements frequently applied in engineering practice for the use of evaluating system performances are introduced, including robustness, reliability, and dissipativity. Several design techniques suitable for the multi-objective variance-constrained control and filtering problems for nonlinear stochastic systems are discussed. In particular, as a special case for the multi-objective design problems, the mixed H 2 / H ∞ control and filtering problems are reviewed in great detail. Subsequently, some latest results on the variance-constrained multi-objective control and filtering problems for the nonlinear stochastic systems are summarized. Finally, conclusions are drawn, and several possible future research directions are pointed out
