    Contributions of plasma physics to chaos and nonlinear dynamics

    This topical review focusses on the contributions of plasma physics to chaos and nonlinear dynamics bringing new methods which are or can be used in other scientific domains. It starts with the development of the theory of Hamiltonian chaos, and then deals with order or quasi order, for instance adiabatic and soliton theories. It ends with a shorter account of dissipative and high dimensional Hamiltonian dynamics, and of quantum chaos. Most of these contributions are a spin-off of the research on thermonuclear fusion by magnetic confinement, which started in the fifties. Their presentation is both exhaustive and compact.     Cycling chaos: its creation, persistence and loss of stability in a model of nonlinear magnetoconvection

    We examine a model system where attractors may consist of a heteroclinic cycle between chaotic sets; this ‘cycling chaos’ manifests itself as trajectories that spend increasingly long periods lingering near chaotic invariant sets interspersed with short transitions between neighbourhoods of these sets. Such behaviour is robust to perturbations that preserve the symmetry of the system; we examine bifurcations of this state. We discuss a scenario where an attracting cycling chaotic state is created at a blowout bifurcation of a chaotic attractor in an invariant subspace. This differs from the standard scenario for the blowout bifurcation in that in our case, the blowout is neither subcritical nor supercritical. The robust cycling chaotic state can be followed to a point where it loses stability at a resonance bifurcation and creates a series of large period attractors. The model we consider is a ninth-order truncated ordinary differential equation (ODE) model of three-dimensional incompressible convection in a plane layer of conducting fluid subjected to a vertical magnetic field and a vertical temperature gradient. Symmetries of the model lead to the existence of invariant subspaces for the dynamics; in particular there are invariant subspaces that correspond to regimes of two-dimensional flows, with variation in the vertical but only one of the two horizontal directions. Stable two-dimensional chaotic flow can go unstable to three-dimensional flow via the cross-roll instability. We show how the bifurcations mentioned above can be located by examination of various transverse Liapunov exponents. We also consider a reduction of the ODE to a map and demonstrate that the same behaviour can be found in the corresponding map. This allows us to describe and predict a number of observed transitions in these models. The dynamics we describe is new but nonetheless robust, and so should occur in other applications

    A Collection of Challenging Optimization Problems in Science, Engineering and Economics

    Function optimization and finding simultaneous solutions of a system of nonlinear equations (SNE) are two closely related and important optimization problems. However, unlike in the case of function optimization in which one is required to find the global minimum and sometimes local minima, a database of challenging SNEs where one is required to find stationary points (extrama and saddle points) is not readily available. In this article, we initiate building such a database of important SNE (which also includes related function optimization problems), arising from Science, Engineering and Economics. After providing a short review of the most commonly used mathematical and computational approaches to find solutions of such systems, we provide a preliminary list of challenging problems by writing the Mathematical formulation down, briefly explaning the origin and importance of the problem and giving a short account on the currently known results, for each of the problems.     Oscillations in I/O monotone systems under negative feedback

    Oscillatory behavior is a key property of many biological systems. The Small-Gain Theorem (SGT) for input/output monotone systems provides a sufficient condition for global asymptotic stability of an equilibrium and hence its violation is a necessary condition for the existence of periodic solutions. One advantage of the use of the monotone SGT technique is its robustness with respect to all perturbations that preserve monotonicity and stability properties of a very low-dimensional (in many interesting examples, just one-dimensional) model reduction. This robustness makes the technique useful in the analysis of molecular biological models in which there is large uncertainty regarding the values of kinetic and other parameters. However, verifying the conditions needed in order to apply the SGT is not always easy. This paper provides an approach to the verification of the needed properties, and illustrates the approach through an application to a classical model of circadian oscillations, as a nontrivial ``case study,'' and also provides a theorem in the converse direction of predicting oscillations when the SGT conditions fail.Comment: Related work can be retrieved from second author's websit

    Tipping Points and Early Warning Signals in the Climate-Carbon System

    This is a thesis about tipping points and early warning signals. The tipping points investigated are related to various components of the climate-carbon system. In contrast, the work on early warning signals has more generic applications, however in this thesis they are analysed in the context of the climate-carbon system. The thesis begins with an introduction to the climate-carbon system as well as a discussion of tipping points in the Earth system. Then a more mathematical summary of tipping points and early warning signals is given. An investigation into the ‘compost bomb’ is undertaken, in which the spatial structure of soils is accounted for. It is found that a hot summer could cause a compost bomb. The effect of biogeochemical heating on the stability of the global carbon cycle is investigated and it is found to play only a small role. The potential for instabilities in the climate-carbon cycle is further investigated when the dynamic behaviour of the ocean carbon cycle is accounted for. It is found that some CMIP6 models may be close to having an unstable carbon cycle. Spatial early warning signals are investigated in the context of more rapidly forced systems. It is found that spatial early warning signals perform better when the system is rapidly forced compared with time series based early warning signals. The typical assumptions about white noise made when using early warning signals are also studied. It is found that time correlated noise may mask the early warning signal.     Model Based Control of Soft Robots: A Survey of the State of the Art and Open Challenges

    Continuum soft robots are mechanical systems entirely made of continuously deformable elements. This design solution aims to bring robots closer to invertebrate animals and soft appendices of vertebrate animals (e.g., an elephant's trunk, a monkey's tail). This work aims to introduce the control theorist perspective to this novel development in robotics. We aim to remove the barriers to entry into this field by presenting existing results and future challenges using a unified language and within a coherent framework. Indeed, the main difficulty in entering this field is the wide variability of terminology and scientific backgrounds, making it quite hard to acquire a comprehensive view on the topic. Another limiting factor is that it is not obvious where to draw a clear line between the limitations imposed by the technology not being mature yet and the challenges intrinsic to this class of robots. In this work, we argue that the intrinsic effects are the continuum or multi-body dynamics, the presence of a non-negligible elastic potential field, and the variability in sensing and actuation strategies.Comment: 69 pages, 13 figure

    This chapter surveys work on dynamic heterogeneous agent models (HAMs) in economics and finance. Emphasis is given to simple models that, at least to some extent, are tractable by analytic methods in combination with computational tools. Most of these models are behavioral models with boundedly rational agents using different heuristics or rule of thumb strategies that may not be perfect, but perform reasonably well. Typically these models are highly nonlinear, e.g. due to evolutionary switching between strategies, and exhibit a wide range of dynamical behavior ranging from a unique stable steady state to complex, chaotic dynamics. Aggregation of simple interactions at the micro level may generate sophisticated structure at the macro level. Simple HAMs can explain important observed stylized facts in financial time series, such as excess volatility, high trading volume, temporary bubbles and trend following, sudden crashes and mean reversion, clustered volatility and fat tails in the returns distribution.

    Turing conditions for pattern forming systems on evolving manifolds

    The study of pattern-forming instabilities in reaction-diffusion systems on growing or otherwise time-dependent domains arises in a variety of settings, including applications in developmental biology, spatial ecology, and experimental chemistry. Analyzing such instabilities is complicated, as there is a strong dependence of any spatially homogeneous base states on time, and the resulting structure of the linearized perturbations used to determine the onset of instability is inherently non-autonomous. We obtain general conditions for the onset and structure of diffusion driven instabilities in reaction-diffusion systems on domains which evolve in time, in terms of the time-evolution of the Laplace-Beltrami spectrum for the domain and functions which specify the domain evolution. Our results give sufficient conditions for diffusive instabilities phrased in terms of differential inequalities which are both versatile and straightforward to implement, despite the generality of the studied problem. These conditions generalize a large number of results known in the literature, such as the algebraic inequalities commonly used as a sufficient criterion for the Turing instability on static domains, and approximate asymptotic results valid for specific types of growth, or specific domains. We demonstrate our general Turing conditions on a variety of domains with different evolution laws, and in particular show how insight can be gained even when the domain changes rapidly in time, or when the homogeneous state is oscillatory, such as in the case of Turing-Hopf instabilities. Extensions to higher-order spatial systems are also included as a way of demonstrating the generality of the approach
