    Estimation of the Handwritten Text Skew Based on Binary Moments

    Binary moments represent one of the methods for the text skew estimation in binary images. It has been used widely for the skew identification of the printed text. However, the handwritten text consists of text objects, which are characterized with different skews. Hence, the method should be adapted for the handwritten text. This is achieved with the image splitting into separate text objects made by the bounding boxes. Obtained text objects represent the isolated binary objects. The application of the moment-based method to each binary object evaluates their local text skews. Due to the accuracy, estimated skew data can be used as an input to the algorithms for the text line segmentation

    Kannada Character Recognition System A Review

    Intensive research has been done on optical character recognition ocr and a large number of articles have been published on this topic during the last few decades. Many commercial OCR systems are now available in the market, but most of these systems work for Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters. There are no sufficient number of works on Indian language character recognition especially Kannada script among 12 major scripts in India. This paper presents a review of existing work on printed Kannada script and their results. The characteristics of Kannada script and Kannada Character Recognition System kcr are discussed in detail. Finally fusion at the classifier level is proposed to increase the recognition accuracy.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    LANGUAGE INDEPENDENT ROBUST SKEW DETECTION AND CORRECTION TECHNIQUE FOR DOCUMENT IMAGES

    Document image processing is an increasingly important technology essential in all optical character recognition (OCR) systems and for automation of various office documents. A document originally has zero-skew (tilt), but when a page is scanned or photo copied, skew may be introduced due to various factors and is practically unavoidable. Presence even a small amount of skew (0.50) will have detrimental effects on document analysis as it has a direct effect on the reliability and efficiency of segmentation, recognition and feature extraction stages. Therefore removal of skew is of paramount importance in the field of document analysis and OCR and is the first step to be accomplished. This paper presents a novel technique for skew detection and correction which is both language and content independent. The proposed technique is based on the maximum density of the foreground pixels and their orientation in the document image. Unlike other conventional algorithms which work only for machine printed textual documents scripted in English, this technique works well for all kinds of document images (machine printed, hand written, complex, noisy and simple). The technique presented here is tested with 150 different document image samples and is found to provide results with an accuracy of 0.1

    A New Weighted Region-based Hough Transform Algorithm for Robust Line Detection in Poor Quality Images of 2D Lattices of Rectangular Objects

    In this work we present a novel kernel-based Hough Transform method for robust line detection in poor quality images of 2D lattices of rectangular objects. Following a preprocessing stage that specifies the connected regions of the image, the proposed method uses a kernel to specify each region's voting strength based on the following shape descriptors: a) its rectangularity, b) the orientation of the major side of its minimum area bounding rectangle (MBR), and c) the MBR's geometrical center. Experimental and theoretical analysis on the uncertainties associated with the geometrical center as well as the polar parameters of the MBR's major axis line equation allows for automatic selection of the parameters used to specify the shape of the kernel's footstep on the accumulator array. Comparisons performed on images of building facades taken under impaired visual conditions or with low accuracy sensors (e.g. thermal images) between the proposed method and other Hough Transform algorithms, show an improved accuracy of our method in detecting lines and/or linear formations. Finally, the robustness of the proposed method is shown in two other application domains those of, façade image rectification and skew detection and correction in rotated scanned documents

    Word matching using single closed contours for indexing handwritten historical documents

    Effective indexing is crucial for providing convenient access to scanned versions of large collections of historically valuable handwritten manuscripts. Since traditional handwriting recognizers based on optical character recognition (OCR) do not perform well on historical documents, recently a holistic word recognition approach has gained in popularity as an attractive and more straightforward solution (Lavrenko et al. in proc. document Image Analysis for Libraries (DIAL’04), pp. 278–287, 2004). Such techniques attempt to recognize words based on scalar and profile-based features extracted from whole word images. In this paper, we propose a new approach to holistic word recognition for historical handwritten manuscripts based on matching word contours instead of whole images or word profiles. The new method consists of robust extraction of closed word contours and the application of an elastic contour matching technique proposed originally for general shapes (Adamek and O’Connor in IEEE Trans Circuits Syst Video Technol 5:2004). We demonstrate that multiscale contour-based descriptors can effectively capture intrinsic word features avoiding any segmentation of words into smaller subunits. Our experiments show a recognition accuracy of 83%, which considerably exceeds the performance of other systems reported in the literature

    AbstractIn computer vision, segmentation is the process of partitioning a digital image into multiple segments (sets of pixels). Image segmentation is thus inevitable. Segmentation used for text-based images aim in retrieval of specific information from the entire image. This information can be a line or a word or even a character. This paper proposes various methodologies to segment a text based image at various levels of segmentation. This material serves as a guide and update for readers working on the text based segmentation area of Computer Vision. First, the need for segmentation is justified in the context of text based information retrieval. Then, the various factors affecting the segmentation process are discussed. Followed by the levels of text segmentation are explored. Finally, the available techniques with their superiorities and weaknesses are reviewed, along with directions for quick referral are suggested. Special attention is given to the handwriting recognition since this area requires more advanced techniques for efficient information extraction and to reach the ultimate goal of machine simulation of human reading
