    Development of an acoustic communication link for micro underwater vehicles

    PhD ThesisIn recent years there has been an increasing trend towards the use of Micro Remotely Operated Vehicles (ÎŒROVs), such as the Videoray and Seabotix LBV products, for a range of subsea applications, including environmental monitoring, harbour security, military surveillance and offshore inspection. A major operational limitation is the umbilical cable, which is traditionally used to supply power and communications to the vehicle. This tether has often been found to significantly restrict the agility of the vehicle or in extreme cases, result in entanglement with subsea structures. This thesis addresses the challenges associated with developing a reliable full-duplex wireless communications link aimed at tetherless operation of a ÎŒROV. Previous research has demonstrated the ability to support highly compressed video transmissions over several kilometres through shallow water channels with large range-depth ratios. However, the physical constraints of these platforms paired with the system cost requirements pose significant additional challenges. Firstly, the physical size/weight of transducers for the LF (8-16kHz) and MF (16-32kHz) bands would significantly affect the dynamics of the vehicle measuring less than 0.5m long. Therefore, this thesis explores the challenges associated with moving the operating frequency up to around 50kHz centre, along with the opportunities for increased data rate and tracking due to higher bandwidth. The typical operating radius of ÎŒROVs is less than 200m, in water < 100m deep, which gives rise to multipath channels characterised by long timespread and relatively sparse arrivals. Hence, the system must be optimised for performance in these conditions. The hardware costs of large multi-element receiver arrays are prohibitive when compared to the cost of the ÎŒROV platform. Additionally, the physical size of such arrays complicates deployment from small surface vessels. Although some recent developments in iterative equalisation and decoding structures have enhanced the performance of single element receivers, they are not found to be adequate in such channels. This work explores the optimum cost/performance trade-off in a combination of a micro beamforming array using a Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation with Iterative Decoding (BICM-ID) receiver structure. The highly dynamic nature of ÎŒROVs, with rapid acceleration/deceleration and complex thruster/wake effects, are also a significant challenge to reliable continuous communications. The thesis also explores how these effects can best be mitigated via advanced Doppler correction techniques, and adaptive coding and modulation via a simultaneous frequency multiplexed down link. In order to fully explore continuous adaptation of the transmitted signals, a real-time full-duplex communication system was constructed in hardware, utilising low cost components and a highly optimised PC based receiver structure. Rigorous testing, both in laboratory conditions and through extensive field trials, have enabled the author to explore the performance of the communication link on a vehicle carrying out typical operations and presenting a wide range of channel, noise, Doppler and transmission latency conditions. This has led to a comprehensive set of design recommendations for a reliable and cost effective link capable of continuous throughputs of >30 kbits/s

    The Bi-directional Spatial Spectrum for MIMO Radar and Its Applications

    <p>Radar systems have long applied electronically-steered phased arrays to discriminate returns in azimuth angle and elevation angle. On receiver arrays, beamforming is performed after reception of the data, allowing for many adaptive array processing algorithms to be employed. However, on transmitter arrays, up until recently pre-determined phase shifts had to applied to each transmitter element before transmission, precluding adaptive transmit array processing schemes. Recent advances in multiple-input multiple-output radar techniques have allowed for transmitter channels to separated after data reception, allowing for virtual non-causal "after-the-fact" transmit beamforming. The ability to discriminate in both direction-of-arrival and direction-of-departure allows for the novel ability to discriminate line-of-sight returns from multipath returns. This works extends the concept of virtual non-causal transmit beamforming to the broader concept of a bi-directional spatial spectrum, and describes application of such a spectrum to applications such as spread-Doppler multipath clutter mitigation in ground-vehicle radar, and calibration of a receiver array of a MIMO system with ground clutter only. Additionally, for this work, a low-power MIMO radar testbed was developed for lab testing of MIMO radar concepts.</p>Dissertatio

    Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years

    Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010–2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions

    Efficient SAR MTI simulator of marine scenes

    TĂšcniques de detecciĂł de moviment amb radars d'apertura sintĂštica multicanals sobre escenaris marĂ­tims.[ANGLÈS] Multichannel spaceborne and airborne synthetic aperture radars (SAR) offer the opportunity to monitor maritime traffic through specially designed instruments and applying a suitable signal processing in order to reject sea surface clutter. These processing techniques are known as Moving Target Indication techniques (MTI) and the choice of the most adequate method depends on the radar system and operating environment. In maritime scenes the seas presents a complicated clutter whose temporal/spatial coherence models and background reflectivity depends on a large number of factors and are still subject of research. Moreover the targets kinematics are influenced by the sea conditions, producing in some situations high alterations in the imaged target. These aspects make difficult the detectability analysis of vessels in maritime scenarios, requiring both theoretical models and numerical simulations. This thesis looks into the few available MTI techniques and deals experimentally with them in a developed simulator for maritime SAR images. The results are also presented in a image format, giving the sequence for one trial simulation and the asymptotic probability of detection for the simulated conditions.[CASTELLÀ] Los radares de apertura sintĂ©tica (SAR) multicanal a bordo de satĂ©lites o plataformas aerotransportadas ofrecen la oportunidad de monitorizar el trĂĄfico marĂ­timo a travĂ©s de instrumentos especialmente diseñados y procesando los datos recibidos de forma adecuada para rechazar la señal provocada por la reflexiĂłn del mar.     A Priori Knowledge-Based Post-Doppler STAP for Traffic Monitoring with Airborne Radar

    Die VerkehrsĂŒberwachung gewinnt aufgrund des weltweiten Anstiegs der Verkehrsteilnehmer immer mehr an Bedeutung. Sicherer und effizierter Straßenverkehr erfordert detaillierte Verkehrsinformationen. HĂ€ufig sind diese lediglich stationĂ€r, rĂ€umlich stark begrenzt und meist nur auf Hauptverkehrsstraßen verfĂŒgbar. In dieser Hinsicht ist ein Ausfall des Telekommunikationsnetzes, beispielsweise im Falle einer Katastrophe, und der damit einhergehende Informationsverlust als kritisch einzustufen. Flugzeuggetragene Radarsysteme mit synthetischer Apertur (eng. Synthetic Aperture Radar - SAR) können fĂŒr dieses Szenario eine Lösung darstellen, da sie großflĂ€chig hochauflösende Bilder generieren können, unabhĂ€ngig von Tageslicht und Witterungsbedingungen. Sie ermöglichen aufgrund dieser Charakteristik die Detektion von Bewegtzielen am Boden (eng. ground moving target indication – GMTI). Moderne GMTI-Algorithmen und -Systeme, die prinzipiell fĂŒr die VerkehrsĂŒberwachung verwendbar sind, wurden in der Literatur bereits diskutiert. Allerdings ist die Robustheit dieser Systeme oft mit hohen Kosten, hoher HardwarekomplexitĂ€t und hohem Rechenaufwand verbunden. Diese Dissertation stellt einen neuartigen GMTI-Prozessor vor, der auf dem Radar-Mehrkanalverfahren post-Doppler space-time adaptive processing (PD STAP) basiert. Durch die Überlagerung einer Straßenkarte mit einem digitalen Höhenmodell ist es mithilfe des PD STAP möglich, Falschdetektionen zu erkennen und auszuschließen sowie die detektierten Fahrzeuge ihren korrekten Straßenpositionen zu zuordnen. Die prĂ€zisen SchĂ€tzungen von Position, Geschwindigkeit und Bewegungsrichtung der Fahrzeuge können mit vergleichsweise geringerer Hardware-KomplexitĂ€t zu niedrigeren Kosten durchgefĂŒhrt werden. Ferner wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein effizienter Datenkalibrierungsalgorithmus erlĂ€utert, der das Ungleichgewicht zwischen den EmpfangskanĂ€len sowie die Variation des Dopplerschwerpunkts ĂŒber Entfernung und Azimut korrigiert und so das Messergebnis verbessert. DarĂŒber hinaus werden neue und automatisierte Strategien zur Erhebung von Trainingsdaten vorgestellt, die fĂŒr die SchĂ€tzung der Clutter-Kovarianzmatrix wegen ihres direkten Einflusses auf die Clutter-UnterdrĂŒckung und Zieldetektion essentiell fĂŒr PD STAP sind. Der neuartige PD STAP Prozessor verfĂŒgt ĂŒber drei verschiedene Betriebsarten, die fĂŒr militĂ€rische und zivile Anwendungen geeignet sind, darunter ein schneller Verarbeitungsalgorithmus der das Potential fĂŒr eine zukĂŒnftige Echtzeit-VerkehrsĂŒberwachung hat. Alle Betriebsarten wurden erfolgreich mit Radar-Mehrkanaldaten des flugzeuggetragenen F-SAR-Radarsensors des DLR getestet

    Wide-band channel sounding in the bands above 2GHz

    Modem telecommunication services require increasing data rates for both mobile and fixed applications. At frequencies in the range 2.5 GHz to 6 GHz physical constraints on the size of equipment result in antenna with moderate directivity typically with an antenna beam width of 20 degrees or greater. Thus building and ground clutter is present within the first Fresnel zones of the antenna system which gives rise to multi-path propagation. This multi-path propagation (average delay and RMS delay spread) has been investigated using a wideband FMCW channel sounder that is capable of operation at a number of frequencies. The channel sounder has been based upon a parallel architecture sounder operating within the 2 GHz band with a number of frequency conversion modules to translate operation to the new frequency bands under study. Two primary configurations have been explored. In the first of these, propagation has been measured simultaneously within the 2.5 GHz, 3.4 GHz and 5.7 GHz bands. This is believed to be novel and original. In the second configuration four parallel channels operating within the 5.7 GHz band may be operated simultaneously. This configuration supports multiple antennas at the receiver. To support the work in the bands from 2.5 GHz to 6 GHz wideband discone antenna have been designed and fabricated. A system to provide relative gain and phase calibration for up to four antennas has been developed and demonstrated. This is also believed to represent a novel method of performing antenna and array calibration. Finally, the frequency converters have been used in conjunction with additional components to provide an FMCàžž sounder operating within the 60 GHz Oxygen absorption band. This work is novel in that up to 1 GHz of spectrum can be swept. To support this work a significant number of microwave components have been designed and developed. In particular a novel wide band balanced X3 multiplier and a novel impedance-matched amplitude-equaliser (to provide amplifier gain-slope equalisation) has been developed. Channel soundings have been performed at three frequencies simultaneously using band specific and common antenna. The average delay and RMS delay spread have been demonstrated to be essentially frequency independent for the environments evaluated

    Hardware Development of an Ultra-Wideband System for High Precision Localization Applications

    A precise localization system in an indoor environment has been developed. The developed system is based on transmitting and receiving picosecond pulses and carrying out a complete narrow-pulse, signal detection and processing scheme in the time domain. The challenges in developing such a system include: generating ultra wideband (UWB) pulses, pulse dispersion due to antennas, modeling of complex propagation channels with severe multipath effects, need for extremely high sampling rates for digital processing, synchronization between the tag and receivers’ clocks, clock jitter, local oscillator (LO) phase noise, frequency offset between tag and receivers’ LOs, and antenna phase center variation. For such a high precision system with mm or even sub-mm accuracy, all these effects should be accounted for and minimized. In this work, we have successfully addressed many of the above challenges and developed a stand-alone system for positioning both static and dynamic targets with approximately 2 mm and 6 mm of 3-D accuracy, respectively. The results have exceeded the state of the art for any commercially available UWB positioning system and are considered a great milestone in developing such technology. My contributions include the development of a picosecond pulse generator, an extremely wideband omni-directional antenna, a highly directive UWB receiving antenna with low phase center variation, an extremely high data rate sampler, and establishment of a non-synchronized UWB system architecture. The developed low cost sampler, for example, can be easily utilized to sample narrow pulses with up to 1000 GS/s while the developed antennas can cover over 6 GHz bandwidth with minimal pulse distortion. The stand-alone prototype system is based on tracking a target using 4-6 base stations and utilizing a triangulation scheme to find its location in space. Advanced signal processing algorithms based on first peak and leading edge detection have been developed and extensively evaluated to achieve high accuracy 3-D localization. 1D, 2D and 3D experiments have been carried out and validated using an optical reference system which provides better than 0.3 mm 3-D accuracy. Such a high accuracy wireless localization system should have a great impact on the operating room of the future

    Development and performance evaluation of a multistatic radar system

    Multistatic radar systems are of emerging interest as they can exploit spatial diversity, enabling improved performance and new applications. Their development is being fuelled by advances in enabling technologies in such fields as communications and Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Such systems differ from typical modern active radar systems through consisting of multiple spatially diverse transmitter and receiver sites. Due to this spatial diversity, these systems present challenges in managing their operation as well as in usefully combining the multiple sources of information to give an output to the radar operator. In this work, a novel digital Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) based coherent multistatic radar system designed at University College London, named ‘NetRad’, has been developed to produce some of the first published experimental results, investigating the challenges of operating such a system, and determining what level of performance might be achievable. Full detail of the various stages involved in the combination of data from the component transmitter-receiver pairs within a multistatic system is investigated, and many of the practical issues inherent are discussed. Simulation and subsequent experimental verification of several centralised and decentralised detection algorithms in terms of localisation (resolution and parameter estimation) of targets was undertaken. The computational cost of the DSP involved in multistatic data fusion is also considered. This gave a clear demonstration of several of the benefits of multistatic radar. Resolution of multiple targets that would have been unresolvable in a conventional monostatic system was shown. Targets were also shown to be plotted as two-dimensional vector position and velocities from use of time delay and Doppler shift information only. A range of targets were used including some such as walking people which were particularly challenging due to the variability of Radar Cross Section (RCS). Performance improvements were found to be dependant on the type of multistatic radar, method of data fusion and target characteristics in question. It is likely that future work will look to further explore the optimisation of multistatic radar for the various measures of performance identified and discussed in this work
