Analysis of Implicit Uncertain Systems. Part I: Theoretical Framework
This paper introduces a general and powerful framework for the analysis of uncertain systems, encompassing linear fractional transformations, the behavioral approach for system theory and the integral quadratic constraint formulation. In this approach, a system is defined by implicit equations, and the central analysis question is to test for solutions of these equations. In Part I, the general properties of this formulation are developed, and computable necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a robust performance problem posed in this framework
Robust Temporal Logic Model Predictive Control
Control synthesis from temporal logic specifications has gained popularity in
recent years. In this paper, we use a model predictive approach to control
discrete time linear systems with additive bounded disturbances subject to
constraints given as formulas of signal temporal logic (STL). We introduce a
(conservative) computationally efficient framework to synthesize control
strategies based on mixed integer programs. The designed controllers satisfy
the temporal logic requirements, are robust to all possible realizations of the
disturbances, and optimal with respect to a cost function. In case the temporal
logic constraint is infeasible, the controller satisfies a relaxed, minimally

LMI approach to mixed performance objective controllers: application to Robust ℋ2 Synthesis
The problem of synthesizing a controller for plants subject to arbitrary, finite energy disturbances and white noise disturbances via Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) is presented. This is achieved by considering white noise disturbances as belonging to a constrained set in ℓ2. In the case of where only white noise disturbances are present, the procedure reduces to standard ℋ2 synthesis. When arbitrary, finite energy disturbances are also present, the procedure may be used to synthesize general mixed performance objective controllers, and for certain cases, Robust ℋ2 controllers
Robust control of ill-conditioned plants: high-purity distillation
Using a high-purity distillation column as an example, the physical reason for the poor conditioning and its implications on control system design and performance are explained. It is shown that an acceptable performance/robustness tradeoff cannot be obtained by simple loop-shaping techniques (using singular values) and that a good understanding of the model uncertainty is essential for robust control system design. Physically motivated uncertainty descriptions (actuator uncertainties) are translated into the H∞/structured singular value framework, which is demonstrated to be a powerful tool to analyze and understand the complex phenomena
Robust Multiple Signal Classification via Probability Measure Transformation
In this paper, we introduce a new framework for robust multiple signal
classification (MUSIC). The proposed framework, called robust
measure-transformed (MT) MUSIC, is based on applying a transform to the
probability distribution of the received signals, i.e., transformation of the
probability measure defined on the observation space. In robust MT-MUSIC, the
sample covariance is replaced by the empirical MT-covariance. By judicious
choice of the transform we show that: 1) the resulting empirical MT-covariance
is B-robust, with bounded influence function that takes negligible values for
large norm outliers, and 2) under the assumption of spherically contoured noise
distribution, the noise subspace can be determined from the eigendecomposition
of the MT-covariance. Furthermore, we derive a new robust measure-transformed
minimum description length (MDL) criterion for estimating the number of
signals, and extend the MT-MUSIC framework to the case of coherent signals. The
proposed approach is illustrated in simulation examples that show its
advantages as compared to other robust MUSIC and MDL generalizations
ℋ∞ optimization with spatial constraints
A generalized ℋ∞ synthesis problem where non-euclidian spatial norms on the disturbances and output error are used is posed and solved. The solution takes the form of a linear matrix inequality. Some problems which fall into this class are presented. In particular, solutions are presented to two problems: a variant of ℋ∞ synthesis where norm constraints on each component of the disturbance can be imposed, and synthesis for a certain class of robust performance problems
