    3D Reconstruction of Indoor Corridor Models Using Single Imagery and Video Sequences

    In recent years, 3D indoor modeling has gained more attention due to its role in decision-making process of maintaining the status and managing the security of building indoor spaces. In this thesis, the problem of continuous indoor corridor space modeling has been tackled through two approaches. The first approach develops a modeling method based on middle-level perceptual organization. The second approach develops a visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) system with model-based loop closure. In the first approach, the image space was searched for a corridor layout that can be converted into a geometrically accurate 3D model. Manhattan rule assumption was adopted, and indoor corridor layout hypotheses were generated through a random rule-based intersection of image physical line segments and virtual rays of orthogonal vanishing points. Volumetric reasoning, correspondences to physical edges, orientation map and geometric context of an image are all considered for scoring layout hypotheses. This approach provides physically plausible solutions while facing objects or occlusions in a corridor scene. In the second approach, Layout SLAM is introduced. Layout SLAM performs camera localization while maps layout corners and normal point features in 3D space. Here, a new feature matching cost function was proposed considering both local and global context information. In addition, a rotation compensation variable makes Layout SLAM robust against cameras orientation errors accumulations. Moreover, layout model matching of keyframes insures accurate loop closures that prevent miss-association of newly visited landmarks to previously visited scene parts. The comparison of generated single image-based 3D models to ground truth models showed that average ratio differences in widths, heights and lengths were 1.8%, 3.7% and 19.2% respectively. Moreover, Layout SLAM performed with the maximum absolute trajectory error of 2.4m in position and 8.2 degree in orientation for approximately 318m path on RAWSEEDS data set. Loop closing was strongly performed for Layout SLAM and provided 3D indoor corridor layouts with less than 1.05m displacement errors in length and less than 20cm in width and height for approximately 315m path on York University data set.     A multisensor SLAM for dense maps of large scale environments under poor lighting conditions

    This thesis describes the development and implementation of a multisensor large scale autonomous mapping system for surveying tasks in underground mines. The hazardous nature of the underground mining industry has resulted in a push towards autonomous solutions to the most dangerous operations, including surveying tasks. Many existing autonomous mapping techniques rely on approaches to the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem which are not suited to the extreme characteristics of active underground mining environments. Our proposed multisensor system has been designed from the outset to address the unique challenges associated with underground SLAM. The robustness, self-containment and portability of the system maximize the potential applications.The multisensor mapping solution proposed as a result of this work is based on a fusion of omnidirectional bearing-only vision-based localization and 3D laser point cloud registration. By combining these two SLAM techniques it is possible to achieve some of the advantages of both approaches – the real-time attributes of vision-based SLAM and the dense, high precision maps obtained through 3D lasers. The result is a viable autonomous mapping solution suitable for application in challenging underground mining environments.A further improvement to the robustness of the proposed multisensor SLAM system is a consequence of incorporating colour information into vision-based localization. Underground mining environments are often dominated by dynamic sources of illumination which can cause inconsistent feature motion during localization. Colour information is utilized to identify and remove features resulting from illumination artefacts and to improve the monochrome based feature matching between frames.Finally, the proposed multisensor mapping system is implemented and evaluated in both above ground and underground scenarios. The resulting large scale maps contained a maximum offset error of ±30mm for mapping tasks with lengths over 100m

    Vision-based SLAM using natural features in indoor environments

    This paper presents a practical approach to solve the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem for autonomous mobile platforms by using natural visual landmarks obtained from an stereoscopic camera. It is an attempt to depart from traditional sensors such as laser rangefinders in order to gain the many benefits of nature-inspired information-rich 3D vision sensors. Whilst this makes the system fully observable in that the sensor provide enough information (range and bearing) to compute the full 2D estate of the observed landmarks from a single position, it is also true that depth information is difficult to rely on, particularly on measurements beyond a few meters (in fact the full 3D estate is observable, but here robot motion is constrained to 2D and only the 2D problem is considered). The work presented here is an attempt to overcome such a drawback by tackling the problem from a partially measurable SLAM perspective in that only landmark bearing from one of the cameras is employed in the fusion estimation. Range information estimates from the stereo pair is only used during map building in the landmark initialization phase in order to provide a reasonably accurate initial estimate. An additional benefit of the approach presented here lies in the data association aspect of SLAM. The availability of powerful feature extraction algorithms from the vision community, such as SIFT, permits a more flexible SLAM implementation separated from feature representation, extraction and matching, essentially carrying out matching with minimal recourse to geometry. Simulation results on real data illustrate the validity of the approach. © 2005 IEEE

    3-D Laser-Based Multiclass and Multiview Object Detection in Cluttered Indoor Scenes

    This paper investigates the problem of multiclass and multiview 3-D object detection for service robots operating in a cluttered indoor environment. A novel 3-D object detection system using laser point clouds is proposed to deal with cluttered indoor scenes with a fewer and imbalanced training data. Raw 3-D point clouds are first transformed to 2-D bearing angle images to reduce the computational cost, and then jointly trained multiple object detectors are deployed to perform the multiclass and multiview 3-D object detection. The reclassification technique is utilized on each detected low confidence bounding box in the system to reduce false alarms in the detection. The RUS-SMOTEboost algorithm is used to train a group of independent binary classifiers with imbalanced training data. Dense histograms of oriented gradients and local binary pattern features are combined as a feature set for the reclassification task. Based on the dalian university of technology (DUT)-3-D data set taken from various office and household environments, experimental results show the validity and good performance of the proposed method

    Localization and tracking of parameterized objects in point clouds

Sensors like laser range-finders and depth cameras have become increasingly popular in autonomous robotic applications. A common task is to locate and track specific objects of interest located somewhere in the point cloud. This often introduces a tedious network of heuristics to build objects from identified primitives or an intractable high dimensional search space. Through a parameterized object model and certain relaxation functions, a likelihood based view of the data can be used to accomplish these goals with increased performance and reliability.     Indoor Mapping and Reconstruction with Mobile Augmented Reality Sensor Systems

    Augmented Reality (AR) ermöglicht es, virtuelle, dreidimensionale Inhalte direkt innerhalb der realen Umgebung darzustellen. Anstatt jedoch beliebige virtuelle Objekte an einem willkürlichen Ort anzuzeigen, kann AR Technologie auch genutzt werden, um Geodaten in situ an jenem Ort darzustellen, auf den sich die Daten beziehen. Damit eröffnet AR die Möglichkeit, die reale Welt durch virtuelle, ortbezogene Informationen anzureichern. Im Rahmen der vorliegenen Arbeit wird diese Spielart von AR als "Fused Reality" definiert und eingehend diskutiert. Der praktische Mehrwert, den dieses Konzept der Fused Reality bietet, lässt sich gut am Beispiel seiner Anwendung im Zusammenhang mit digitalen Gebäudemodellen demonstrieren, wo sich gebäudespezifische Informationen - beispielsweise der Verlauf von Leitungen und Kabeln innerhalb der Wände - lagegerecht am realen Objekt darstellen lassen. Um das skizzierte Konzept einer Indoor Fused Reality Anwendung realisieren zu können, müssen einige grundlegende Bedingungen erfüllt sein. So kann ein bestimmtes Gebäude nur dann mit ortsbezogenen Informationen augmentiert werden, wenn von diesem Gebäude ein digitales Modell verfügbar ist. Zwar werden größere Bauprojekt heutzutage oft unter Zuhilfename von Building Information Modelling (BIM) geplant und durchgeführt, sodass ein digitales Modell direkt zusammen mit dem realen Gebäude ensteht, jedoch sind im Falle älterer Bestandsgebäude digitale Modelle meist nicht verfügbar. Ein digitales Modell eines bestehenden Gebäudes manuell zu erstellen, ist zwar möglich, jedoch mit großem Aufwand verbunden. Ist ein passendes Gebäudemodell vorhanden, muss ein AR Gerät außerdem in der Lage sein, die eigene Position und Orientierung im Gebäude relativ zu diesem Modell bestimmen zu können, um Augmentierungen lagegerecht anzeigen zu können. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit werden diverse Aspekte der angesprochenen Problematik untersucht und diskutiert. Dabei werden zunächst verschiedene Möglichkeiten diskutiert, Indoor-Gebäudegeometrie mittels Sensorsystemen zu erfassen. Anschließend wird eine Untersuchung präsentiert, inwiefern moderne AR Geräte, die in der Regel ebenfalls über eine Vielzahl an Sensoren verfügen, ebenfalls geeignet sind, als Indoor-Mapping-Systeme eingesetzt zu werden. Die resultierenden Indoor Mapping Datensätze können daraufhin genutzt werden, um automatisiert Gebäudemodelle zu rekonstruieren. Zu diesem Zweck wird ein automatisiertes, voxel-basiertes Indoor-Rekonstruktionsverfahren vorgestellt. Dieses wird außerdem auf der Grundlage vierer zu diesem Zweck erfasster Datensätze mit zugehörigen Referenzdaten quantitativ evaluiert. Desweiteren werden verschiedene Möglichkeiten diskutiert, mobile AR Geräte innerhalb eines Gebäudes und des zugehörigen Gebäudemodells zu lokalisieren. In diesem Kontext wird außerdem auch die Evaluierung einer Marker-basierten Indoor-Lokalisierungsmethode präsentiert. Abschließend wird zudem ein neuer Ansatz, Indoor-Mapping Datensätze an den Achsen des Koordinatensystems auszurichten, vorgestellt

    Influence of complex environments on LiDAR-Based robot navigation

    La navigation sécuritaire et efficace des robots mobiles repose grandement sur l’utilisation des capteurs embarqués. L’un des capteurs qui est de plus en plus utilisé pour cette tâche est le Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR). Bien que les recherches récentes montrent une amélioration des performances de navigation basée sur les LiDARs, faire face à des environnements non structurés complexes ou des conditions météorologiques difficiles reste problématique. Dans ce mémoire, nous présentons une analyse de l’influence de telles conditions sur la navigation basée sur les LiDARs. Notre première contribution est d’évaluer comment les LiDARs sont affectés par les flocons de neige durant les tempêtes de neige. Pour ce faire, nous créons un nouvel ensemble de données en faisant l’acquisition de données durant six précipitations de neige. Une analyse statistique de ces ensembles de données, nous caractérisons la sensibilité de chaque capteur et montrons que les mesures de capteurs peuvent être modélisées de manière probabilistique. Nous montrons aussi que les précipitations de neige ont peu d’influence au-delà de 10 m. Notre seconde contribution est d’évaluer l’impact de structures tridimensionnelles complexes présentes en forêt sur les performances d’un algorithme de reconnaissance d’endroits. Nous avons acquis des données dans un environnement extérieur structuré et en forêt, ce qui permet d’évaluer l’influence de ces derniers sur les performances de reconnaissance d’endroits. Notre hypothèse est que, plus deux balayages laser sont proches l’un de l’autre, plus la croyance que ceux-ci proviennent du même endroit sera élevée, mais modulé par le niveau de complexité de l’environnement. Nos expériences confirment que la forêt, avec ses réseaux de branches compliqués et son feuillage, produit plus de données aberrantes et induit une chute plus rapide des performances de reconnaissance en fonction de la distance. Notre conclusion finale est que, les environnements complexes étudiés influencent négativement les performances de navigation basée sur les LiDARs, ce qui devrait être considéré pour développer des algorithmes de navigation robustes.To ensure safe and efficient navigation, mobile robots heavily rely on their ability to use on-board sensors. One such sensor, increasingly used for robot navigation, is the Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR). Although recent research showed improvement in LiDAR-based navigation, dealing with complex unstructured environments or difficult weather conditions remains problematic. In this thesis, we present an analysis of the influence of such challenging conditions on LiDAR-based navigation. Our first contribution is to evaluate how LiDARs are affected by snowflakes during snowstorms. To this end, we create a novel dataset by acquiring data during six snowfalls using four sensors simultaneously. Based on statistical analysis of this dataset, we characterized the sensitivity of each device and showed that sensor measurements can be modelled in a probabilistic manner. We also showed that falling snow has little impact beyond a range of 10 m. Our second contribution is to evaluate the impact of complex of three-dimensional structures, present in forests, on the performance of a LiDAR-based place recognition algorithm. We acquired data in structured outdoor environment and in forest, which allowed evaluating the impact of the environment on the place recognition performance. Our hypothesis was that the closer two scans are acquired from each other, the higher the belief that the scans originate from the same place will be, but modulated by the level of complexity of the environments. Our experiments confirmed that forests, with their intricate network of branches and foliage, produce more outliers and induce recognition performance to decrease more quickly with distance when compared with structured outdoor environment. Our conclusion is that falling snow conditions and forest environments negatively impact LiDAR-based navigation performance, which should be considered to develop robust navigation algorithms
