    Learning Deep Similarity Metric for 3D MR-TRUS Registration

    Purpose: The fusion of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and magnetic resonance (MR) images for guiding targeted prostate biopsy has significantly improved the biopsy yield of aggressive cancers. A key component of MR-TRUS fusion is image registration. However, it is very challenging to obtain a robust automatic MR-TRUS registration due to the large appearance difference between the two imaging modalities. The work presented in this paper aims to tackle this problem by addressing two challenges: (i) the definition of a suitable similarity metric and (ii) the determination of a suitable optimization strategy. Methods: This work proposes the use of a deep convolutional neural network to learn a similarity metric for MR-TRUS registration. We also use a composite optimization strategy that explores the solution space in order to search for a suitable initialization for the second-order optimization of the learned metric. Further, a multi-pass approach is used in order to smooth the metric for optimization. Results: The learned similarity metric outperforms the classical mutual information and also the state-of-the-art MIND feature based methods. The results indicate that the overall registration framework has a large capture range. The proposed deep similarity metric based approach obtained a mean TRE of 3.86mm (with an initial TRE of 16mm) for this challenging problem. Conclusion: A similarity metric that is learned using a deep neural network can be used to assess the quality of any given image registration and can be used in conjunction with the aforementioned optimization framework to perform automatic registration that is robust to poor initialization.Comment: To appear on IJCAR

    IMAGE FUSION FOR MULTIFOCUS IMAGES USING SPEEDUP ROBUST FEATURES

    The multi-focus image fusion technique has emerged as major topic in image processing in order to generate all focus images with increased depth of field from multi focus photographs. Image fusion is the process of combining relevant information from two or more images into a single image. The image registration technique includes the entropy theory. Speed up Robust Features (SURF), feature detector and Binary Robust Invariant Scalable Key points (BRISK) feature descriptor is used in feature matching process. An improved RANDOM Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm is adopted to reject incorrect matches. The registered images are fused using stationary wavelet transform (SWT).The experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance for unregistered multiple multi-focus images and it especially robust to scale and rotation translation compared with traditional direct fusion method.ƂĀ  Ƃ

    Fast and Accurate 3D Face Recognition Using Registration to an Intrinsic Coordinate System and Fusion of Multiple Region classifiers

    In this paper we present a new robust approach for 3D face registration to an intrinsic coordinate system of the face. The intrinsic coordinate system is defined by the vertical symmetry plane through the nose, the tip of the nose and the slope of the bridge of the nose. In addition, we propose a 3D face classifier based on the fusion of many dependent region classifiers for overlapping face regions. The region classifiers use PCA-LDA for feature extraction and the likelihood ratio as a matching score. Fusion is realised using straightforward majority voting for the identification scenario. For verification, a voting approach is used as well and the decision is defined by comparing the number of votes to a threshold. Using the proposed registration method combined with a classifier consisting of 60 fused region classifiers we obtain a 99.0% identification rate on the all vs first identification test of the FRGC v2 data. A verification rate of 94.6% at FAR=0.1% was obtained for the all vs all verification test on the FRGC v2 data using fusion of 120 region classifiers. The first is the highest reported performance and the second is in the top-5 of best performing systems on these tests. In addition, our approach is much faster than other methods, taking only 2.5 seconds per image for registration and less than 0.1 ms per comparison. Because we apply feature extraction using PCA and LDA, the resulting template size is also very small: 6 kB for 60 region classifiers

    Towards image-guided pancreas and biliary endoscopy: Automatic multi-organ segmentation on abdominal CT with dense dilated networks

    Segmentation of anatomy on abdominal CT enables patient-specific image guidance in clinical endoscopic procedures and in endoscopy training. Because robust interpatient registration of abdominal images is necessary for existing multi-atlas- and statistical-shape-model-based segmentations, but remains challenging, there is a need for automated multi-organ segmentation that does not rely on registration. We present a deep-learning-based algorithm for segmenting the liver, pancreas, stomach, and esophagus using dilated convolution units with dense skip connections and a new spatial prior. The algorithm was evaluated with an 8-fold cross-validation and compared to a joint-label-fusion-based segmentation based on Dice scores and boundary distances. The proposed algorithm yielded more accurate segmentations than the joint-label-fusion-ba sed algorithm for the pancreas (median Dice scores 66 vs 37), stomach (83 vs 72) and esophagus (73 vs 54) and marginally less accurate segmentation for the liver (92 vs 93). We conclude that dilated convolutional networks with dense skip connections can segment the liver, pancreas, stomach and esophagus from abdominal CT without image registration and have the potential to support image-guided navigation in gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures

    Enhanced video indirect ophthalmoscopy (VIO) via robust mosaicing

    Indirect ophthalmoscopy (IO) is the standard of care for evaluation of the neonatal retina. When recorded on video from a head-mounted camera, IO images have low quality and narrow Field of View (FOV). We present an image fusion methodology for converting a video IO recording into a single, high quality, wide-FOV mosaic that seamlessly blends the best frames in the video. To this end, we have developed fast and robust algorithms for automatic evaluation of video quality, artifact detection and removal, vessel mapping, registration, and multi-frame image fusion. Our experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    Combining Shape and Learning for Medical Image Analysis

    Automatic methods with the ability to make accurate, fast and robust assessments of medical images are highly requested in medical research and clinical care. Excellent automatic algorithms are characterized by speed, allowing for scalability, and an accuracy comparable to an expert radiologist. They should produce morphologically and physiologically plausible results while generalizing well to unseen and rare anatomies. Still, there are few, if any, applications where today\u27s automatic methods succeed to meet these requirements.\ua0The focus of this thesis is two tasks essential for enabling automatic medical image assessment, medical image segmentation and medical image registration. Medical image registration, i.e. aligning two separate medical images, is used as an important sub-routine in many image analysis tools as well as in image fusion, disease progress tracking and population statistics. Medical image segmentation, i.e. delineating anatomically or physiologically meaningful boundaries, is used for both diagnostic and visualization purposes in a wide range of applications, e.g. in computer-aided diagnosis and surgery.The thesis comprises five papers addressing medical image registration and/or segmentation for a diverse set of applications and modalities, i.e. pericardium segmentation in cardiac CTA, brain region parcellation in MRI, multi-organ segmentation in CT, heart ventricle segmentation in cardiac ultrasound and tau PET registration. The five papers propose competitive registration and segmentation methods enabled by machine learning techniques, e.g. random decision forests and convolutional neural networks, as well as by shape modelling, e.g. multi-atlas segmentation and conditional random fields
