Geometry, Dynamics, and Emergence: Cowrie Form, Image Geometry, and Coupled Subcritical Oscillations
Living Systems are dynamically controlled by processes that they themselves create: here we study the emergence of the sophisticated control regimes in models of biological systems. A major route to understanding in Biology today is discovering which genes lead to what, almost always neglecting a story for how the genes achieve their ends. From an understanding perspective this is disappointing, and we strive to make more holistic models which try to get at the underlying nature of biological logic. Towards this end, we notice geometric regimes in cowrie growth and work towards a falsifiable and explanatory mechanistic model, aiming to make the case for the importance of mechanics and dynamics in development. We also present the first systematic study of globally-coupled subcritical limit cycle oscillators, exploring a rarely remarked upon dynamical regime. This regime is biologically interesting as it has bistability between oscillations and quiescence and is a simple excitable media which could be used as a reduced neural model. I am interested in clustering in the system as an example of symmetry breaking in identical systems; small differences in initial conditions lead to differentiation of the oscillators into particular varieties, analogous to cell fate decisions. Progress on these problems works towards illuminating the biological approach to self-assembly
Nonlinear Systems
The editors of this book have incorporated contributions from a diverse group of leading researchers in the field of nonlinear systems. To enrich the scope of the content, this book contains a valuable selection of works on fractional differential equations. The book aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on nonlinear systems and some aspects of fractional calculus. The main subject areas are divided into two theoretical and applied sections. Nonlinear systems are useful for researchers in mathematics, applied mathematics, and physics, as well as graduate students who are studying these systems with reference to their theory and application. This book is also an ideal complement to the specific literature on engineering, biology, health science, and other applied science areas. The opportunity given by IntechOpen to offer this book under the open access system contributes to disseminating the field of nonlinear systems to a wide range of researchers
On the Characterization of Hankel and Toeplitz Operators Describing Switched Linear Dynamic Systems with Point Delays
This paper investigates the causality properties of a class of linear time-delay systems under constant point delays which possess a finite set of distinct linear time-invariant parameterizations (or configurations) which, together with some switching function, conform a linear time-varying switched dynamic system. Explicit expressions are given to define pointwisely the causal and anticausal Toeplitz and Hankel operators from the set of switching time instants generated from the switching function. The case of the auxiliary unforced system defined by the matrix of undelayed dynamics being dichotomic (i.e., it has no eigenvalue on the complex imaginary axis) is considered in detail. Stability conditions as well as dual instability ones are discussed for this case which guarantee that the whole system is either stable, or unstable but no configuration of the switched system has eigenvalues within some vertical strip including the imaginary axis. It is proved that if the system is causal and uniformly controllable and observable, then it is globally asymptotically Lyapunov stable independent of the delays, that is, for any possibly values of such delays, provided that a minimum residence time in-between consecutive switches is kept or if all the set of matrices describing the auxiliary unforced delay—free system parameterizations commute pairwise.Ministerio de Educación (DPI2006-00714
Dynamics of Macrosystems; Proceedings of a Workshop, September 3-7, 1984
There is an increasing awareness of the important and persuasive role that instability and random, chaotic motion play in the dynamics of macrosystems. Further research in the field should aim at providing useful tools, and therefore the motivation should come from important questions arising in specific macrosystems. Such systems include biochemical networks, genetic mechanisms, biological communities, neutral networks, cognitive processes and economic structures. This list may seem heterogeneous, but there are similarities between evolution in the different fields. It is not surprising that mathematical methods devised in one field can also be used to describe the dynamics of another.
IIASA is attempting to make progress in this direction. With this aim in view this workshop was held at Laxenburg over the period 3-7 September 1984. These Proceedings cover a broad canvas, ranging from specific biological and economic problems to general aspects of dynamical systems and evolutionary theory
Dynamical Systems
Complex systems are pervasive in many areas of science integrated in our daily lives. Examples include financial markets, highway transportation networks, telecommunication networks, world and country economies, social networks, immunological systems, living organisms, computational systems and electrical and mechanical structures. Complex systems are often composed of a large number of interconnected and interacting entities, exhibiting much richer global scale dynamics than the properties and behavior of individual entities. Complex systems are studied in many areas of natural sciences, social sciences, engineering and mathematical sciences. This special issue therefore intends to contribute towards the dissemination of the multifaceted concepts in accepted use by the scientific community. We hope readers enjoy this pertinent selection of papers which represents relevant examples of the state of the art in present day research. [...
