    Switched predictive control design for optimal wet-clutch engagement

    Modeling of hydraulic clutch transmissions is far from straightforward due to their nonlinear hybrid dynamics, i.e. switching between three dynamic phases. In this paper we identify a local linear model only for the constrained first phase, based on which a predictive controller is used to track a suitable engagement signal. The robustness of this controller in the latter two phases is guaranteed by making the constraints inactive and pre-tuning the control parameters based on its closed loop formulation and applying robust stability theorem. This controller is then implemented in real-time on a wet-clutch test setup and is shown to achieve optimal engagement

    Design and Certification of Industrial Predictive Controllers

    Three decades have passed since milestone publications by several industrial and academic researchers spawned a flurry of research and commercial, industrial activities on model predictive control (MPC). The improvement in efficiency of the on-line optimization part of MPC led to its adoption in mechanical and mechatronic systems from process control and petrochemical applications. However, the massive strides made by the academic community in guaranteeing stability through state-space MPC have not always been directly applicable in an industrial setting. This thesis is concerned with design and a posteriori certification of feasibility/stability of input-output MPC controllers for industrial applications without terminal conditions (i.e. terminal penalty, terminal constraint, terminal control). MPC controllers which differ in their modelling and prediction method are categorized into three major groups, and a general equivalence between these forms is established. Then an overview on robust set invariance is given as it plays a fundamental role in our analysis of the constrained control systems. These tools are used to give new tuning guidelines as well as a posteriori tests for guaranteeing feasibility of the suboptimal or optimal predictive control law without terminal conditions, which is fundamental towards stability of the closed loop. Next, penalty adaptation is used as a systematic procedure to derive asymptotic stability without any terminal conditions and without using set invariance or Lyapunov arguments. This analysis however is restricted to repetitive systems with input constraints. Then, predictive control without terminal conditions is considered for nonlinear and distributed systems. The invariance tools are extended to switching nonlinear systems, a proof of convergence is given for the iterative nonlinear MPC (NMPC), and a guarantee on overall cost decrease is developed for distributed NMPC, all without terminal conditions. Reference generation and parameter adaptation are shown to be effective mechanisms for NMPC and distributed NMPC (DNMPC) under changing environmental conditions. This is demonstrated on two benchmark test-cases i.e. the wet-clutch and hydrostatic drivetrain, respectively. Terminal conditions in essence are difficult to compute, may compromise performance and are not used in the industry. The main contribution of the thesis is a systematic development and analysis of MPC without terminal conditions for linear, nonlinear and distributed systems.This work was supported within the framework of the LeCoPro project (grant nr. 80032) of the Institute for the Promotion of Innovation through Science and Technology in Flanders (IWT-Vlaanderen)

    Vibration suppression in multi-body systems by means of disturbance filter design methods

    This paper addresses the problem of interaction in mechanical multi-body systems and shows that subsystem interaction can be considerably minimized while increasing performance if an efficient disturbance model is used. In order to illustrate the advantage of the proposed intelligent disturbance filter, two linear model based techniques are considered: IMC and the model based predictive (MPC) approach. As an illustrative example, multivariable mass-spring-damper and quarter car systems are presented. An adaptation mechanism is introduced to account for linear parameter varying LPV conditions. In this paper we show that, even if the IMC control strategy was not designed for MIMO systems, if a proper filter is used, IMC can successfully deal with disturbance rejection in a multivariable system, and the results obtained are comparable with those obtained by a MIMO predictive control approach. The results suggest that both methods perform equally well, with similar numerical complexity and implementation effort

    Putting reaction-diffusion systems into port-Hamiltonian framework

    Reaction-diffusion systems model the evolution of the constituents distributed in space under the influence of chemical reactions and diffusion [6], [10]. These systems arise naturally in chemistry [5], but can also be used to model dynamical processes beyond the realm of chemistry such as biology, ecology, geology, and physics. In this paper, by adopting the viewpoint of port-controlled Hamiltonian systems [7] we cast reaction-diffusion systems into the portHamiltonian framework. Aside from offering conceptually a clear geometric interpretation formalized by a Stokes-Dirac structure [8], a port-Hamiltonian perspective allows to treat these dissipative systems as interconnected and thus makes their analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, more accessible from a modern dynamical systems and control theory point of view. This modeling approach permits us to draw immediately some conclusions regarding passivity and stability of reaction-diffusion systems. It is well-known that adding diffusion to the reaction system can generate behaviors absent in the ode case. This primarily pertains to the problem of diffusion-driven instability which constitutes the basis of Turing’s mechanism for pattern formation [11], [5]. Here the treatment of reaction-diffusion systems as dissipative distributed portHamiltonian systems could prove to be instrumental in supply of the results on absorbing sets, the existence of the maximal attractor and stability analysis. Furthermore, by adopting a discrete differential geometrybased approach [9] and discretizing the reaction-diffusion system in port-Hamiltonian form, apart from preserving a geometric structure, a compartmental model analogous to the standard one [1], [2] is obtaine

    Optimal torque vectoring control strategies for stabilisation of electric vehicles at the limits of handling

    The study of chassis control has been a major research area in the automotive industry and academia for more than fifty years now. Among the popular methods used to actively control the dynamics of a vehicle, torque vectoring, the method of controlling both the direction and the magnitude of the torque on the wheels, is of particular interest. Such a method can alter the vehicle’s behaviour in a positive way under both sub-limit and limit handling conditions and has become even more relevant in the case of an electric vehicle equipped with multiple electric motors. Torque vectoring has been so far employed mainly in lateral vehicle dynamics control applications, with the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle remaining under the full authority of the driver. Nevertheless, it has been also recognised that active control of the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle can improve vehicle stability in limit handling situations. A characteristic example of this is the case where the driver misjudges the entry speed into a corner and the vehicle starts to deviate from its path, a situation commonly referred to as a ‘terminal understeer’ condition. Use of combined longitudinal and lateral control in such scenarios have been already proposed in the literature, but these solutions are mainly based on heuristic approaches that also neglect the strong coupling of longitudinal and lateral dynamics in limit handling situations. The main aim of this project is to develop a real-time implementable multivariable control strategy to stabilise the vehicle at the limits of handling in an optimal way using torque vectoring via the two independently controlled electric motors on the rear axle of an electric vehicle. To this end, after reviewing the most important contributions in the control of lateral and/or longitudinal vehicle dynamics with a particular focus on the limit handling solutions, a realistic vehicle reference behaviour near the limit of lateral acceleration is derived. An unconstrained optimal control strategy is then developed for terminal understeer mitigation. The importance of constraining both the vehicle state and the control inputs when the vehicle operates at the limits of handling is shown by developing a constrained linear optimal control framework, while the effect of using a constrained nonlinear optimal control framework instead is subsequently examined next. Finally an optimal estimation strategy for providing the necessary vehicle state information to the proposed optimal control strategies is constructed, assuming that only common vehicle sensors are available. All the developed optimal control strategies are assessed not only in terms of performance but also execution time, so to make sure they are implementable in real time on a typical Electronic Control Unit

    We are pleased to present the conference proceedings for the 12th edition of the International Fluid Power Conference (IFK). The IFK is one of the world’s most significant scientific conferences on fluid power control technology and systems. It offers a common platform for the presentation and discussion of trends and innovations to manufacturers, users and scientists. The Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems at the TU Dresden is organizing and hosting the IFK for the sixth time. Supporting hosts are the Fluid Power Association of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), Dresdner Verein zur Förderung der Fluidtechnik e. V. (DVF) and GWT-TUD GmbH. The organization and the conference location alternates every two years between the Chair of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems in Dresden and the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Systems in Aachen. The symposium on the first day is dedicated to presentations focused on methodology and fundamental research. The two following conference days offer a wide variety of application and technology orientated papers about the latest state of the art in fluid power. It is this combination that makes the IFK a unique and excellent forum for the exchange of academic research and industrial application experience. A simultaneously ongoing exhibition offers the possibility to get product information and to have individual talks with manufacturers. The theme of the 12th IFK is “Fluid Power – Future Technology”, covering topics that enable the development of 5G-ready, cost-efficient and demand-driven structures, as well as individual decentralized drives. Another topic is the real-time data exchange that allows the application of numerous predictive maintenance strategies, which will significantly increase the availability of fluid power systems and their elements and ensure their improved lifetime performance. We create an atmosphere for casual exchange by offering a vast frame and cultural program.
