    PID Controller Tuning Optimization with BFO Algorithm in AVR System

    This study presents the design and tuning of Proportional Integral Controller (PID) for Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system to improve the dynamic performance and robustness of the system. The PID controller is the very commonly used compensating controller which is used in higher order system. This controller widely used in many different areas like Chemical process control, Aerospace, Automation and Electrical Drives etc. There are various soft computing techniques which are used for tuning of PID controller to control the voltage in AVR system. Tuning of PID parameters is important because, these parameters have a great effect on the stability and performance of the control system. Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) techniques is one of the important techniques to tune the PID parameter in AVR system.     Electrohydraulic servo system has been used in industry in a wide number of applications. Its dynamics are highly nonlinear and also have large extent of model uncertainties and external disturbances. In order to in-crease the reliability, controllability and utilizing the superior speed of response achievable from electrohydraulic systems, further research is required to develop a control software has the ability of overcoming the problems of system nonlinearities. In This paper, a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller is designed and attached to electrohydraulic servo actuator system to control its stability. The PID parameters are optimized by using four techniques: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bacteria Foraging Algorithm (BFA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Ant colony optimization (ACO). The simulation results show that the steady-state error of system is eliminated; the rapidity is enhanced by PSO applied on Proportional Integral Derivative (PPID), Bacteria Foraging Algorithm applied on Proportional Integral Derivative (BPID), GA applied on Proportional Integral Derivative (GPID), and ACO Algorithm applied on Proportional Integral Derivative (ACO-PID) controllers when the system parameter variation was happened, and has good performances using in real applications. A comparative study between used modern optimization techniques are described in the paper and the tradeoff between them

    PID CONTROLLER TUNING OF 3-PHASE SEPARATOR IN OIL & GAS INDUSTRY USING BACTERIA FORAGING OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM

    In oil and gas industry, one of the most important stages in processing petroleum is separation. It can be classified by operating configuration such as vertical, horizontal and spherical or by its function which is 2-phase or 3-phase. In this paper, vertical 3-phase separator will be chosen and researched. 3-phase separator is used to separate water, oil and gas. Gas will be at the top, oil will be the middle layer and water will be at the bottom due to gravitational force and the density of the substance. The objective is to tune the PID controller controlling the level of the water in the separator. Outflow rate of the water from the bottom of the separator will be used to control the water level. Currently there are controlling methods namely PI control using trial and error method, PI control using Butterworth filter design method and IMC method. These methods were having quite high % overshoot and long settling time. So, this paper will introduce Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) in optimizing the parameters for PI control. BFOA mimics the behaviour of the bacteria in searching for highest food concentration which then modified to search the best parameters for the PID controller. BFOA will be able to find the best parameters compared with the conventional methods and show better performance than PI control using trial and error method, PI control using Butterworth filter design method or IMC method. BFOA will be studied and other existing conventional methods as well. Simulation will be done based on the mathematical model of the 3-phase separator

    Power system stability is the capability of power systems to maintain load magnitude within specified limits under steady state conditions in electrical power transmission. In modern days, the electrical power systems have grown in terms of complexity due to increasing interconnected power line exchange. For that, an inherent of controllers were essential to correct the deviation in the presence of external disturbances. This paper hence aims to review the basic concepts of power system stability in load frequency control. Various control techniques were analyzed and presented. Power system stability can be classified in terms of method to improve power system stability, which are rotor angle stability, frequency stability and voltage stability. It is found that each method has different purpose and focus on solving different types of problem occurred. It is hoped that this study can contribute to clarify the different types of power system stability in terms of where it occurs, and which is the best method based on different situation

    Chaotic multi-objective optimization based design of fractional order PI{\lambda}D{\mu} controller in AVR system

    In this paper, a fractional order (FO) PI{\lambda}D\mu controller is designed to take care of various contradictory objective functions for an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system. An improved evolutionary Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II), which is augmented with a chaotic map for greater effectiveness, is used for the multi-objective optimization problem. The Pareto fronts showing the trade-off between different design criteria are obtained for the PI{\lambda}D\mu and PID controller. A comparative analysis is done with respect to the standard PID controller to demonstrate the merits and demerits of the fractional order PI{\lambda}D\mu controller.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figure

    Optimized PID Controller with Bacterial Foraging Algorithm

    Fish robot precision depends on a variety of factors including the precision of motion sensors, mobility of links, elasticity of fish robot actuators system, and the precision of controllers. Among these factors, precision and efficiency of controllers play a key role in fish robot precision.  In the present paper, a robot fish has been designed with dynamics and swimming mechanism of a real fish. According to equations of motion, this fish robot is designed with 3 hinged links. Subsequently, its control system was defined based on the same equations. In this paper, an approach is suggested to control fish robot trajectory using optimized PID controller through Bacterial Foraging algorithm, so as to adjust the gains. Then, this controller is compared to the powerful Fuzzy controller and optimized PID controller through PSO algorithm when applying step and sine inputs. The research findings revealed that optimized PID controller through Bacterial Foraging Algorithm had better performance than other approaches in terms of decreasing of the settling time, reduction of the maximum overshoot and desired steady state error in response to step input. Efficiency of the suggested method has been analyzed by MATLAB software

Its widespread use and universal acceptability is allocated to its elementary operating algorithm, the relative ease with the controller effects can be adjusted, the broad range of applications where it has truly developed excellent control performances, and the familiarity with which it is deduced among researchers. In spite of its wide spread use, one of its short-comings is that there is no efficient tuning method for PID controller. Given this background, the main objective of this is to develop a tuning methodology that would be universally applicable to a range of well-liked process that occurs in the process control industry

    Optimal controllers design for voltage control in Off-grid hybrid power system

    Generally, for remote places extension of grid is uneconomical and difficult. Off-grid hybrid power systems (OGHPS) has  renewable energy sources integrated with conventional sources. OGHPS is very significant as it is the only source of electric supply for remote areas. OGHPS under study  has Induction generator (IG) for wind power generation, Photo-Voltaic source with inverter, Synchronous generator (SG) for Diesel Engine (DE) and load. Over-rated PV-inverter has capacity to supply reactive power.  SG of  DE  has Automatic voltage regulator for excitation control to regulate terminal voltage. Load and IG demands reactive power, causes reactive power imbalance hence voltage fluctuations in OGHPS. To manage reactive power for voltage control, two control structures with Proportional–Integral controller(PI), to control  inverter reactive power and  SG excitation by automatic voltage regulator are incorporated.  Improper tuning of controllers lead  to oscillatory and sluggish response. Hence in this test system both controllers need to be tune optimally. This paper proposes novel intelligent computing algorithm , Enhanced Bacterial forging algorithm (EBFA) for optimal reactive power controller for voltage control in OGHPS. Small signal model of OGHPS with proposed controller is  tested for different disturbances. simulation results  are compared  with conventional  method , proved the effectiveness of EBFA

    Hybrid spiral-dynamic bacteria-chemotaxis algorithm with application to control two-wheeled machines

    This paper presents the implementation of the hybrid spiral-dynamic bacteria-chemotaxis (HSDBC) approach to control two different configurations of a two-wheeled vehicle. The HSDBC is a combination of bacterial chemotaxis used in bacterial forging algorithm (BFA) and the spiral-dynamic algorithm (SDA). BFA provides a good exploration strategy due to the chemotaxis approach. However, it endures an oscillation problem near the end of the search process when using a large step size. Conversely; for a small step size, it affords better exploitation and accuracy with slower convergence. SDA provides better stability when approaching an optimum point and has faster convergence speed. This may cause the search agents to get trapped into local optima which results in low accurate solution. HSDBC exploits the chemotactic strategy of BFA and fitness accuracy and convergence speed of SDA so as to overcome the problems associated with both the SDA and BFA algorithms alone. The HSDBC thus developed is evaluated in optimizing the performance and energy consumption of two highly nonlinear platforms, namely single and double inverted pendulum-like vehicles with an extended rod. Comparative results with BFA and SDA show that the proposed algorithm is able to result in better performance of the highly nonlinear systems
