Synchronization of spatiotemporal semiconductor lasers and its application in color image encryption
Optical chaos is a topic of current research characterized by
high-dimensional nonlinearity which is attributed to the delay-induced
dynamics, high bandwidth and easy modular implementation of optical feedback.
In light of these facts, which adds enough confusion and diffusion properties
for secure communications, we explore the synchronization phenomena in
spatiotemporal semiconductor laser systems. The novel system is used in a
two-phase colored image encryption process. The high-dimensional chaotic
attractor generated by the system produces a completely randomized chaotic time
series, which is ideal in the secure encoding of messages. The scheme thus
illustrated is a two-phase encryption method, which provides sufficiently high
confusion and diffusion properties of chaotic cryptosystem employed with unique
data sets of processed chaotic sequences. In this novel method of cryptography,
the chaotic phase masks are represented as images using the chaotic sequences
as the elements of the image. The scheme drastically permutes the positions of
the picture elements. The next additional layer of security further alters the
statistical information of the original image to a great extent along the
three-color planes. The intermediate results during encryption demonstrate the
infeasibility for an unauthorized user to decipher the cipher image. Exhaustive
statistical tests conducted validate that the scheme is robust against noise
and resistant to common attacks due to the double shield of encryption and the
infinite dimensionality of the relevant system of partial differential
equations.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures; Article in press, Optics Communications (2011
Chaos-based communication scheme using proportional and proportional-integral observers
In this paper, we propose a new chaos-based communication scheme using the observers. The novelty lies in the masking procedure that is employed to hide the confidential information using the chaotic oscillator. We use a combination of the addition and inclusion methods to mask the information. The performance of two observers, the proportional observer (P-observer) and the proportional integral observer (PI-observer) is compared that are employed as receivers for the proposed communication scheme. We show that the P-observer is not suitable scheme since it imposes unpractical constraints on the messages to be transmitted. On the other hand, we show that the PI-observer is the better solution because it allows greater flexibility in choosing the gains of the observer and does not impose any unpractical restrictions on the message
Effective synchronization of a class of Chua's chaotic systems using an exponential feedback coupling
In this work a robust exponential function based controller is designed to
synchronize effectively a given class of Chua's chaotic systems. The stability
of the drive-response systems framework is proved through the Lyapunov
stability theory. Computer simulations are given to illustrate and verify the
method.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figure
A Tutorial on Time-Evolving Dynamical Bayesian Inference
In view of the current availability and variety of measured data, there is an
increasing demand for powerful signal processing tools that can cope
successfully with the associated problems that often arise when data are being
analysed. In practice many of the data-generating systems are not only
time-variable, but also influenced by neighbouring systems and subject to
random fluctuations (noise) from their environments. To encompass problems of
this kind, we present a tutorial about the dynamical Bayesian inference of
time-evolving coupled systems in the presence of noise. It includes the
necessary theoretical description and the algorithms for its implementation.
For general programming purposes, a pseudocode description is also given.
Examples based on coupled phase and limit-cycle oscillators illustrate the
salient features of phase dynamics inference. State domain inference is
illustrated with an example of coupled chaotic oscillators. The applicability
of the latter example to secure communications based on the modulation of
coupling functions is outlined. MatLab codes for implementation of the method,
as well as for the explicit examples, accompany the tutorial.Comment: Matlab codes can be found on http://py-biomedical.lancaster.ac.uk
Estimation of communication-delays through adaptive synchronization of chaos
This paper deals with adaptive synchronization of chaos in the presence of
time-varying communication-delays. We consider two bidirectionally coupled
systems that seek to synchronize through a signal that each system sends to the
other one and is transmitted with an unknown time-varying delay. We show that
an appropriate adaptive strategy can be devised that is successful in
dynamically identifying the time-varying delay and in synchronizing the two
systems. The performance of our strategy with respect to the choice of the
initial conditions and the presence of noise in the communication channels is
tested by using numerical simulations. Another advantage of our approach is
that in addition to estimating the communication-delay, the adaptive strategy
could be used to simultaneously identify other parameters, such as e.g., the
unknown time-varying amplitude of the received signal.Comment: Accepted for publication in Chaos, Solitons & Fractal
