    Image-based quantitative analysis of gold immunochromatographic strip via cellular neural network approach

This paper aims to develop a method for accurately segmenting the test line and control line of the gold immunochromatographic strip (GICS) image for quantitatively determining the trace concentrations in the specimen, which can lead to more functional information than the traditional qualitative or semi-quantitative strip assay. The canny operator as well as the mathematical morphology method is used to detect and extract the GICS reading-window. Then, the test line and control line of the GICS reading-window are segmented by the cellular neural network (CNN) algorithm, where the template parameters of the CNN are designed by the switching particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm for improving the performance of the CNN. It is shown that the SPSO-based CNN offers a robust method for accurately segmenting the test and control lines, and therefore serves as a novel image methodology for the interpretation of GICS. Furthermore, quantitative comparison is carried out among four algorithms in terms of the peak signal-to-noise ratio. It is concluded that the proposed CNN algorithm gives higher accuracy and the CNN is capable of parallelism and analog very-large-scale integration implementation within a remarkably efficient time

    Controller design for synchronization of an array of delayed neural networks using a controllable

    This is the post-print version of the Article - Copyright @ 2011 ElsevierIn this paper, a controllable probabilistic particle swarm optimization (CPPSO) algorithm is introduced based on Bernoulli stochastic variables and a competitive penalized method. The CPPSO algorithm is proposed to solve optimization problems and is then applied to design the memoryless feedback controller, which is used in the synchronization of an array of delayed neural networks (DNNs). The learning strategies occur in a random way governed by Bernoulli stochastic variables. The expectations of Bernoulli stochastic variables are automatically updated by the search environment. The proposed method not only keeps the diversity of the swarm, but also maintains the rapid convergence of the CPPSO algorithm according to the competitive penalized mechanism. In addition, the convergence rate is improved because the inertia weight of each particle is automatically computed according to the feedback of fitness value. The efficiency of the proposed CPPSO algorithm is demonstrated by comparing it with some well-known PSO algorithms on benchmark test functions with and without rotations.     A Comprehensive Survey on Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a heuristic global optimization method, proposed originally by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995. It is now one of the most commonly used optimization techniques. This survey presented a comprehensive investigation of PSO. On one hand, we provided advances with PSO, including its modifications (including quantum-behaved PSO, bare-bones PSO, chaotic PSO, and fuzzy PSO), population topology (as fully connected, von Neumann, ring, star, random, etc.), hybridization (with genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, Tabu search, artificial immune system, ant colony algorithm, artificial bee colony, differential evolution, harmonic search, and biogeography-based optimization), extensions (to multiobjective, constrained, discrete, and binary optimization), theoretical analysis (parameter selection and tuning, and convergence analysis), and parallel implementation (in multicore, multiprocessor, GPU, and cloud computing forms). On the other hand, we offered a survey on applications of PSO to the following eight fields: electrical and electronic engineering, automation control systems, communication theory, operations research, mechanical engineering, fuel and energy, medicine, chemistry, and biology. It is hoped that this survey would be beneficial for the researchers studying PSO algorithms

    A metaheuristic particle swarm optimization approach to nonlinear model predictive control

    This paper commences with a short review on optimal control for nonlinear systems, emphasizing the Model Predictive approach for this purpose. It then describes the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm and how it could be applied to nonlinear Model Predictive Control. On the basis of these principles, two novel control approaches are proposed and anal- ysed. One is based on optimization of a numerically linearized perturbation model, whilst the other avoids the linearization step altogether. The controllers are evaluated by simulation of an inverted pendulum on a cart system. The results are compared with a numerical linearization technique exploiting conventional convex optimization methods instead of Particle Swarm Opti- mization. In both approaches, the proposed Swarm Optimization controllers exhibit superior performance. The methodology is then extended to input constrained nonlinear systems, offering a promising new paradigm for nonlinear optimal control design.peer-reviewe

    New commercial power electronic controllers come to the market almost every day to help improve electronic circuit and system performance and efficiency. In DC–DC switching-mode converters, a simple and elegant hysteretic controller is used to regulate the basic buck, boost and buck–boost converters under slightly different configurations. In AC–DC converters, the input current shaping for power factor correction posts a constraint. But, several brilliant commercial controllers are demonstrated for boost and fly back converters to achieve almost perfect power factor correction.     Lunar Ascent and Orbit Injection via Neighboring Optimal Guidance and Constrained Attitude Control

    Future human or robotic missions to the Moon will require efficient ascent path and accurate orbit injection maneuvers, because the dynamical conditions at injection affect the subsequent phases of spaceflight. This research focuses on the original combination of two techniques applied to lunar ascent modules, i.e., (1) the recently introduced variable-time-domain neighboring optimal guidance (VTD-NOG), and (2) a constrained proportional-derivative (CPD) attitude control algorithm. VTD-NOG belongs to the class of feedback implicit guidance approaches aimed at finding the corrective control actions capable of maintaining the spacecraft sufficiently close to the reference trajectory. CPD pursues the desired attitude using thrust vector control while constraining the rate of the thrust deflection angle. The numerical results unequivocally demonstrate that the joint use of VTD-NOG and CPD represents an accurate and effective methodology for guidance and control of lunar ascent path and orbit injection in the presence of nonnominal flight conditions
