Sliding-mode neuro-controller for uncertain systems
In this paper, a method that allows for the merger of the good features of sliding-mode control and neural network (NN) design is presented. Design is performed by applying an NN to minimize the cost function that is selected to depend on the distance from the sliding-mode manifold, thus providing that the NN controller enforces sliding-mode motion in a closed-loop system. It has been proven that the selected cost function has no local minima in controller parameter space, so under certain conditions, selection of the NN weights guarantees that the global minimum is reached, and then the sliding-mode conditions are satisfied; thus, closed-loop motion is robust against parameter changes and disturbances. For controller design, the system states and the nominal value of the control input matrix are used. The design for both multiple-input-multiple-output and single-input-single-output systems is discussed. Due to the structure of the (M)ADALINE network used in control calculation, the proposed algorithm can also be interpreted as a sliding-mode-based control parameter adaptation scheme. Neural MRAC based on modified state observer
A new model reference adaptive control design method with guaranteed transient performance using neural networks is proposed in this thesis. With this method, stable tracking of a desired trajectory is realized for nonlinear system with uncertainty, and modified state observer structure is designed to enable desired transient performance with large adaptive gain and at the same time avoid high frequency oscillation. The neural network adaption rule is derived using Lyapunov theory, which guarantees stability of error dynamics and boundedness of neural network weights, and a soft switching sliding mode modification is added in order to adjust tracking error. The proposed method is tested by different theoretical application problems simulations, and also Caterpillar Electro-Hydraulic Test Bench experiments. Markerless visual servoing on unknown objects for humanoid robot platforms
To precisely reach for an object with a humanoid robot, it is of central
importance to have good knowledge of both end-effector, object pose and shape.
In this work we propose a framework for markerless visual servoing on unknown
objects, which is divided in four main parts: I) a least-squares minimization
problem is formulated to find the volume of the object graspable by the robot's
hand using its stereo vision; II) a recursive Bayesian filtering technique,
based on Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) filtering, estimates the 6D pose
(position and orientation) of the robot's end-effector without the use of
markers; III) a nonlinear constrained optimization problem is formulated to
compute the desired graspable pose about the object; IV) an image-based visual
servo control commands the robot's end-effector toward the desired pose. We
demonstrate effectiveness and robustness of our approach with extensive
experiments on the iCub humanoid robot platform, achieving real-time
computation, smooth trajectories and sub-pixel precisions
Fuzzy robust nonlinear control approach for electro-hydraulic flight motion simulator
AbstractA fuzzy robust nonlinear controller for hydraulic rotary actuators in flight motion simulators is proposed. Compared with other three-order models of hydraulic rotary actuators, the proposed controller based on first-order nonlinear model is more easily applied in practice, whose control law is relatively simple. It not only does not need high-order derivative of desired command, but also does not require the feedback signals of velocity, acceleration and jerk of hydraulic rotary actuators. Another advantage is that it does not rely on any information of friction, inertia force and external disturbing force/torque, which are always difficult to resolve in flight motion simulators. Due to the special composite vane seals of rectangular cross-section and goalpost shape used in hydraulic rotary actuators, the leakage model is more complicated than that of traditional linear hydraulic cylinders. Adaptive multi-input single-output (MISO) fuzzy compensators are introduced to estimate nonlinear uncertain functions about leakage and bulk modulus. Meanwhile, the decomposition of the uncertainties is used to reduce the total number of fuzzy rules. Different from other adaptive fuzzy compensators, a discontinuous projection mapping is employed to guarantee the estimation process to be bounded. Furthermore, with a sufficient number of fuzzy rules, the controller theoretically can guarantee asymptotic tracking performance in the presence of the above uncertainties, which is very important for high-accuracy tracking control of flight motion simulators. Comparative experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which can guarantee transient performance and better final accurate tracking in the presence of uncertain nonlinearities and parametric uncertainties
Unknown dynamics estimator-based output-feedback control for nonlinear pure-feedback systems
Most existing adaptive control designs for nonlinear pure-feedback systems have been derived based on backstepping or dynamic surface control (DSC) methods, requiring full system states to be measurable. The neural networks (NNs) or fuzzy logic systems (FLSs) used to accommodate uncertainties also impose demanding computational cost and sluggish convergence. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new output-feedback control for uncertain pure-feedback systems without using backstepping and function approximator. A coordinate transform is first used to represent the pure-feedback system in a canonical form to evade using the backstepping or DSC scheme. Then the Levant's differentiator is used to reconstruct the unknown states of the derived canonical system. Finally, a new unknown system dynamics estimator with only one tuning parameter is developed to compensate for the lumped unknown dynamics in the feedback control. This leads to an alternative, simple approximation-free control method for pure-feedback systems, where only the system output needs to be measured. The stability of the closed-loop control system, including the unknown dynamics estimator and the feedback control is proved. Comparative simulations and experiments based on a PMSM test-rig are carried out to test and validate the effectiveness of the proposed method

Design of a cognitive neural predictive controller for mobile robot
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityIn this thesis, a cognitive neural predictive controller system has been designed to guide a nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot during continuous and non-continuous trajectory tracking and to navigate through static obstacles with collision-free and minimum tracking error. The structure of the controller consists of two layers; the first layer is a neural network system that controls the mobile robot actuators in order to track a desired path. The second layer of the controller is cognitive layer that collects information from the environment and plans the optimal path. In addition to this, it detects if there is any obstacle in the path so it can be avoided by re-planning the trajectory using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) technique.
Two neural networks models are used: the first model is modified Elman recurrent neural network model that describes the kinematic and dynamic model of the mobile robot and it is trained off-line and on-line stages to guarantee that the outputs of the model will accurately represent the actual outputs of the mobile robot system. The trained neural model acts as the position and orientation identifier. The second model is feedforward multi-layer perceptron neural network that describes a feedforward neural controller and it is trained off-line and its weights are adapted on-line to find the reference torques, which controls the steady-state outputs of the mobile robot system. The feedback neural controller is based on the posture neural identifier and quadratic performance index predictive optimisation algorithm for N step-ahead prediction in order to find the optimal torque action in the transient to stabilise the tracking error of the mobile robot system when the trajectory of the robot is drifted from the desired path during transient state.
Three controller methodologies were developed: the first is the feedback neural controller; the second is the nonlinear PID neural feedback controller and the third is nonlinear inverse dynamic neural feedback controller, based on the back-stepping method and Lyapunov criterion. The main advantages of the presented approaches are to plan an optimal path for itself avoiding obstructions by using intelligent (PSO) technique as well as the analytically derived control law, which has significantly high computational accuracy with predictive optimisation technique to obtain the optimal torques control action and lead to minimum tracking error of the mobile robot for different types of trajectories.
The proposed control algorithm has been applied to monitor a nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot, has demonstrated the capability of tracking different trajectories with continuous gradients (lemniscates and circular) or non-continuous gradients (square) with bounded external disturbances and static obstacles. Simulations results and experimental work showed the effectiveness of the proposed cognitive neural predictive control algorithm; this is demonstrated by the minimised tracking error to less than (1 cm) and obtained smoothness of the torque control signal less than maximum torque (0.236 N.m), especially when external disturbances are applied and navigating through static obstacles.
Results show that the five steps-ahead prediction algorithm has better performance compared to one step-ahead for all the control methodologies because of a more complex control structure and taking into account future values of the desired one, not only the current value, as with one step-ahead method. The mean-square error method is used for each component of the state error vector to compare between each of the performance control methodologies in order to give better control results
