Decentralised State Feedback Tracking Control for Large-Scale Interconnected Systems Using Sliding Mode Techniques
A class of large-scale interconnected systems with matched and unmatched uncertainties is studied in this thesis, with the objective of proposing a controller based on diffeomorphisms and some techniques to deal with the tracking problem of the system. The main research developed in this thesis includes: 1. Large-scale interconnected system is a complex system consisting of several semi-independent subsystems, which are typically located in distinct geographic or logical locations. In this situation, decentralised control which only collects the local information is the practical method to deal with large-scale interconnected systems. The decentralised methodology is utilised throughout this thesis, guaranteeing that systems exhibit essential robustness against uncertainty. 2. Sliding mode technique is involved in the process of controller design. By introducing a nonsingular local diffeomorphism, the large-scale system can be transformed into a system with a specific regular form, where the matched uncertainty is completely absent from the subspace spanned by the sliding mode dynamics. The sliding mode based controller is proposed in this thesis to successfully achieve high robustness of the closed-loop interconnected systems with some particular uncertainties. 3. The considered large-scale interconnected systems can always track the smooth desired signals in a finite time. Each subsystem can track its own ideal signal or all subsystems can track the same ideal signal. Both situations are discussed in this thesis and the results are mathematically proven by introducing the Lyapunov theory, even when operating under the presence of disturbances. At the end of each chapter, some simulation examples, like a coupled inverted pendulums system, a river pollution system and a high-speed train system, are presented to verify the correctness of the proposed theory. At the conclusion of this thesis, a brief summary of the research findings has been provided, along with a mention of potential future research directions in tracking control of large-scale systems, like more general boundedness of interconnections, possibilities of distributed control, collaboration with intelligent control and so on. Dual Mode Control of an Inverted Pendulum: Design, Analysis and Experimental Evaluation
We present an inverted pendulum design using readily available V-slot rail components and
3D printing to construct custom parts. To enable the examination of different pendulum
characteristics, we constructed three pendulum poles of different lengths. We implemented
a brake mechanism to modify sliding friction resistance and built a paddle that can be
attached to the ends of the pendulum poles. A testing rig was also developed to consistently
apply disturbances by tapping the pendulum pole, characterizing balancing performance.
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the behavior and control of the pendulum. This
begins by considering its dynamics, including the nonlinear differential equation that
describes the system, its linearization, and its representation in the s-domain. The primary
focus of this work is the development of two distinct control modes for the pendulum: a
velocity control mode, designed to balance the pendulum while the cart is in motion, and a
position control mode, aimed at maintaining the pendulum cart at a specific location. For
this, we derived two different state space models: one for implementing the velocity control
mode and another for the position control mode. In the position control mode, integral action
applied to the cart position ensures that the inverted pendulum remains balanced and
maintains its desired position on the rail. For both models, linear observer-based state
feedback controllers were implemented. The control laws are designed as linear quadratic
regulators (LQR), and the systems are simulated in MATLAB. To actuate the physical
pendulum system, a stepper motor was used, and its controller was assembled in a DIN rail
panel to simplify the integration of all necessary components. We examined how the
optimized performance, achieved with the medium-length pendulum pole, translates to poles
of other lengths. Our findings reveal distinct behavioral differences between the control

A novel adaptive PD-type iterative learning control of the PMSM servo system with the friction uncertainty in low speeds
High precision demands in a large number of emerging robotic applications strengthened the role of the modern control laws in the position control of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) servo system. This paper proposes a learning-based adaptive control approach to improve the PMSM position tracking in the presence of the friction uncertainty. In contrast to most of the reported works considering the servos operating at high speeds, this paper focuses on low speeds in which the friction stemmed deteriorations become more obvious. In this paper firstly, a servo model involving the Stribeck friction dynamics is formulated, and the unknown friction parameters are identified by a genetic algorithm from the offline data. Then, a feedforward controller is designed to inject the friction information into the loop and eliminate it before causing performance degradations. Since the friction is a kind of disturbance and leads to uncertainties having time-varying characters, an Adaptive Proportional Derivative (APD) type Iterative Learning Controller (ILC) named as the APD-ILC is designed to mitigate the friction effects. Finally, the proposed control approach is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment and it is compared with the conventional Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller, Proportional ILC (P-ILC), and Proportional Derivative ILC (PD-ILC) algorithms. The results confirm that the proposed APD-ILC significantly lessens the effects of the friction and thus noticeably improves the control performance in the low speeds of the PMSM
Kinetic energy fluctuation-driven locomotor transitions on potential energy landscapes of beam obstacle traversal and self-righting
Despite contending with constraints imposed by the environment, morphology,
and physiology, animals move well by physically interactingwith the environment
to use and transition between modes such as running, climbing, and
self-righting. By contrast, robots struggle to do so in real world.
Understanding the principles of how locomotor transitions emerge from
constrained physical interaction is necessary for robots to move robustly using
similar strategies. Recent studies discovered that discoid cockroaches use and
transition between diverse locomotor modes to traverse beams and self-right on
ground. For both systems, animals probabilistically transitioned between modes
via multiple pathways, while its self-propulsion created kinetic energy
fluctuation. Here, we seek mechanistic explanations for these observations by
adopting a physics-based approach that integrates biological and robotic
studies.
We discovered that animal and robot locomotor transitions during beam
obstacle traversal and ground self-righting are barrier-crossing transitions on
potential energy landscapes. Whereas animals and robot traversed stiff beams by
rolling their body betweenbeam, they pushed across flimsy beams, suggesting a
concept of terradynamic favorability where modes with easier physical
interaction are more likely to occur. Robotic beam traversal revealed that,
system state either remains in a favorable mode or transitions to one when
energy fluctuation is comparable to the transition barrier. Robotic
self-righting transitions occurred similarly and revealed that changing system
parameters lowers barriers over which comparable fluctuation can induce
transitions. Thetransitionsof animalsin both systems mostly occurred similarly,
but sensory feedback may facilitate its beam traversal. Finally, we developed a
method to measure animal movement across large spatiotemporal scales in a

Optimal speed trajectory and energy management control for connected and automated vehicles
Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) emerge as a promising solution to improve urban mobility, safety, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort with the development of communication technologies, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I). This thesis proposes several control approaches for CAVs with electric powertrains, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with the main objective to improve energy efficiency by optimising vehicle speed trajectory and energy management system. By types of vehicle control, these methods can be categorised into three main scenarios, optimal energy management for a single CAV (single-vehicle), energy-optimal strategy for the vehicle following scenario (two-vehicle), and optimal autonomous intersection management for CAVs (multiple-vehicle).
The first part of this thesis is devoted to the optimal energy management for a single automated series HEV with consideration of engine start-stop system (SSS) under battery charge sustaining operation. A heuristic hysteresis power threshold strategy (HPTS) is proposed to optimise the fuel economy of an HEV with SSS and extra penalty fuel for engine restarts. By a systematic tuning process, the overall control performance of HPTS can be fully optimised for different vehicle parameters and driving cycles.
In the second part, two energy-optimal control strategies via a model predictive control (MPC) framework are proposed for the vehicle following problem. To forecast the behaviour of the preceding vehicle, a neural network predictor is utilised and incorporated into a nonlinear MPC method, of which the fuel and computational efficiencies are verified to be effective through comparisons of numerical examples between a practical adaptive cruise control strategy and an impractical optimal control method. A robust MPC (RMPC) via linear matrix inequality (LMI) is also utilised to deal with the uncertainties existing in V2V communication and modelling errors. By conservative relaxation and approximation, the RMPC problem is formulated as a convex semi-definite program, and the simulation results prove the robustness of the RMPC and the rapid computational efficiency resorting to the convex optimisation.
The final part focuses on the centralised and decentralised control frameworks at signal-free intersections, where the energy consumption and the crossing time of a group of CAVs are minimised. Their crossing order and velocity trajectories are optimised by convex second-order cone programs in a hierarchical scheme subject to safety constraints. It is shown that the centralised strategy with consideration of turning manoeuvres is effective and outperforms a benchmark solution invoking the widely used first-in-first-out policy. On the other hand, the decentralised method is proposed to further improve computational efficiency and enhance the system robustness via a tube-based RMPC. The numerical examples of both frameworks highlight the importance of examining the trade-off between energy consumption and travel time, as small compromises in travel time could produce significant energy savings.Open Acces
Learning and Control of Dynamical Systems
Despite the remarkable success of machine learning in various domains in recent years, our understanding of its fundamental limitations remains incomplete. This knowledge gap poses a grand challenge when deploying machine learning methods in critical decision-making tasks, where incorrect decisions can have catastrophic consequences. To effectively utilize these learning-based methods in such contexts, it is crucial to explicitly characterize their performance. Over the years, significant research efforts have been dedicated to learning and control of dynamical systems where the underlying dynamics are unknown or only partially known a priori, and must be inferred from collected data. However, much of these classical results have focused on asymptotic guarantees, providing limited insights into the amount of data required to achieve desired control performance while satisfying operational constraints such as safety and stability, especially in the presence of statistical noise.
In this thesis, we study the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems. By utilizing recent advances in statistical learning theory, high-dimensional statistics, and control theoretic tools, we aim to establish a fundamental understanding of the number of samples required to achieve desired (i) accuracy in learning the unknown dynamics, (ii) performance in the control of the underlying system, and (iii) satisfaction of the operational constraints such as safety and stability. We provide finite-sample guarantees for these objectives and propose efficient learning and control algorithms that achieve the desired performance at these statistical limits in various dynamical systems. Our investigation covers a broad range of dynamical systems, starting from fully observable linear dynamical systems to partially observable linear dynamical systems, and ultimately, nonlinear systems.
We deploy our learning and control algorithms in various adaptive control tasks in real-world control systems and demonstrate their strong empirical performance along with their learning, robustness, and stability guarantees. In particular, we implement one of our proposed methods, Fourier Adaptive Learning and Control (FALCON), on an experimental aerodynamic testbed under extreme turbulent flow dynamics in a wind tunnel. The results show that FALCON achieves state-of-the-art stabilization performance and consistently outperforms conventional and other learning-based methods by at least 37%, despite using 8 times less data. The superior performance of FALCON arises from its physically and theoretically accurate modeling of the underlying nonlinear turbulent dynamics, which yields rigorous finite-sample learning and performance guarantees. These findings underscore the importance of characterizing the statistical complexity of learning and control of unknown dynamical systems.</p
Fast Sensing and Adaptive Actuation for Robust Legged Locomotion
Robust legged locomotion in complex terrain demands fast perturbation detection and reaction. In animals, due to the neural transmission delays, the high-level control loop involving the brain is absent from mitigating the initial disturbance. Instead, the low-level compliant behavior embedded in mechanics and the mid-level controllers in the spinal cord are believed to provide quick response during fast locomotion. Still, it remains unclear how these low- and mid-level components facilitate robust locomotion.
This thesis aims to identify and characterize the underlining elements responsible for fast sensing and actuation. To test individual elements and their interplay, several robotic systems were implemented. The implementations include active and passive mechanisms as a combination of elasticities and dampers in multi-segment robot legs, central pattern generators inspired by intraspinal controllers, and a synthetic robotic version of an intraspinal sensor.
The first contribution establishes the notion of effective damping. Effective damping is defined as the total energy dissipation during one step, which allows quantifying how much ground perturbation is mitigated. Using this framework, the optimal damper is identified as viscous and tunable. This study paves the way for integrating effective dampers to legged designs for robust locomotion.
The second contribution introduces a novel series elastic actuation system. The proposed system tackles the issue of power transmission over multiple joints, while featuring intrinsic series elasticity. The design is tested on a hopper with two more elastic elements, demonstrating energy recuperation and enhanced dynamic performance.
The third contribution proposes a novel tunable damper and reveals its influence on legged hopping. A bio-inspired slack tendon mechanism is implemented in parallel with a spring. The tunable damping is rigorously quantified on a central-pattern-generator-driven hopping robot, which reveals the trade-off between locomotion robustness and efficiency.
The last contribution explores the intraspinal sensing hypothesis of birds. We speculate that the observed intraspinal structure functions as an accelerometer. This accelerometer could provide fast state feedback directly to the adjacent central pattern generator circuits, contributing to birds’ running robustness. A biophysical simulation framework is established, which provides new perspectives on the sensing mechanics of the system, including the influence of morphologies and material properties.
Giving an overview of the hierarchical control architecture, this thesis investigates the fast sensing and actuation mechanisms in several control layers, including the low-level mechanical response and the mid-level intraspinal controllers. The contributions of this work provide new insight into animal loco-motion robustness and lays the foundation for future legged robot design
Designing LMPA-Based Smart Materials for Soft Robotics Applications
This doctoral research, Designing LMPA (Low Melting Point Alloy) Based Smart Materials for Soft Robotics Applications, includes the following topics: (1) Introduction; (2) Robust Bicontinuous Metal-Elastomer Foam Composites with Highly Tunable Mechanical Stiffness; (3) Actively Morphing Drone Wing Design Enabled by Smart Materials for Green Unmanned Aerial Vehicles; (4) Dynamically Tunable Friction via Subsurface Stiffness Modulation; (5) LMPA Wool Sponge Based Smart Materials with Tunable Electrical Conductivity and Tunable Mechanical Stiffness for Soft Robotics; and (6) Contributions and Future Work.Soft robots are developed to interact safely with environments. Smart composites with tunable properties have found use in many soft robotics applications including robotic manipulators, locomotors, and haptics. The purpose of this work is to develop new smart materials with tunable properties (most importantly, mechanical stiffness) upon external stimuli, and integrate these novel smart materials in relevant soft robots. Stiffness tunable composites developed in previous studies have many drawbacks. For example, there is not enough stiffness change, or they are not robust enough. Here, we explore soft robotic mechanisms integrating stiffness tunable materials and innovate smart materials as needed to develop better versions of such soft robotic mechanisms. First, we develop a bicontinuous metal-elastomer foam composites with highly tunable mechanical stiffness. Second, we design and fabricate an actively morphing drone wing enabled by this smart composite, which is used as smart joints in the drone wing. Third, we explore composite pad-like structures with dynamically tunable friction achieved via subsurface stiffness modulation (SSM). We demonstrate that when these composite structures are properly integrated into soft crawling robots, the differences in friction of the two ends of these robots through SSM can be used to generate translational locomotion for untethered crawling robots. Also, we further develop a new class of smart composite based on LMPA wool sponge with tunable electrical conductivity and tunable stiffness for soft robotics applications. The implications of these studies on novel smart materials design are also discussed
Backstepping Controller for Mobile Robot in Presence of Disturbances and Uncertainties
The objective of this work is to devise an effective control system for addressing the trajectory tracking challenge in nonholonomic mobile robots. Two primary control approaches, namely kinematic and dynamic strategies, are explored to achieve this goal. In the kinematic control domain, a backstepping controller (BSC) is introduced as the core element of the control system. The BSC is utilized to guide the mobile robot along the desired trajectory, leveraging the robot’s kinematic model. To address the limitations of the kinematic control approach, a dynamic control strategy is proposed, incorporating the dynamic parameters of the robot. This dynamic control ensures real-time control of the mobile robot. To ensure the stability of the control system, the Lyapunov stability theory is employed, providing a rigorous framework for analyzing and proving stability. Additionally, to optimize the performance of the control system, a genetic algorithm is employed to design an optimal control law. The effectiveness of the developed control approach is demonstrated through simulation results. These results showcase the enhanced performance and efficiency achieved by the proposed control strategies. Overall, this study presents a comprehensive and robust approach for trajectory tracking in nonholonomic mobile robots, combining kinematic and dynamic control strategies while ensuring stability and performance optimization
Occlusion-Robust Autonomous Robotic Manipulation of Human Soft Tissues With 3D Surface Feedback
Robotic manipulation of 3D soft objects remains challenging in the industrial and medical fields. Various methods based on mechanical modelling, data-driven approaches or explicit feature tracking have been proposed. A unifying disadvantage of these methods is the high computational cost of simultaneous imaging processing, identification of mechanical properties, and motion planning, leading to a need for less computationally intensive methods. We propose a method for autonomous robotic manipulation with 3D surface feedback to solve these issues. First, we produce a deformation model of the manipulated object, which estimates the robots' movements by monitoring the displacement of surface points surrounding the manipulators. Then, we develop a 6-degree-of-freedom velocity controller to manipulate the grasped object to achieve a desired shape. We validate our approach through comparative simulations with existing methods and experiments using phantom and cadaveric soft tissues with the da Vinci Research Kit. The results demonstrate the robustness of the technique to occlusions and various materials. Compared to state-of-the-art linear and data-driven methods, our approach is more precise by 46.5% and 15.9% and saves 55.2% and 25.7% manipulation time, respectively
