    Accurate and automatic NOAA-AVHRR image navigation using a global contour matching approach

    The problem of precise and automatic AVHRR image navigation is tractable in theory, but has proved to be somewhat difficult in practice. The authors' work has been motivated by the need for a fully automatic and operational navigation system capable of geo-referencing NOAA-AVHRR images with high accuracy and without operator supervision. The proposed method is based on the simultaneous use of an orbital model and a contour matching approach. This last process, relying on an affine transformation model, is used to correct the errors caused by inaccuracies in orbit modeling, nonzero value for the spacecraft's roll, pitch and yaw, errors due to inaccuracies in the satellite positioning and failures in the satellite internal clock. The automatic global contour matching process is summarized as follows: i) Estimation of the gradient energy map (edges) in the sensed image and detection of the cloudless (reliable) areas in this map. ii) Initialization of the affine model parameters by minimizing the Euclidean distance between the reference and sensed images objects. iii) Simultaneous optimization of all reference image contours on the sensed image by energy minimization in the domain of the global transformation parameters. The process is iterated in a hierarchical way, reducing the parameter searching space at each iteration.     High-resolution optical and SAR image fusion for building database updating

    This paper addresses the issue of cartographic database (DB) creation or updating using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar and optical images. In cartographic applications, objects of interest are mainly buildings and roads. This paper proposes a processing chain to create or update building DBs. The approach is composed of two steps. First, if a DB is available, the presence of each DB object is checked in the images. Then, we verify if objects coming from an image segmentation should be included in the DB. To do those two steps, relevant features are extracted from images in the neighborhood of the considered object. The object removal/inclusion in the DB is based on a score obtained by the fusion of features in the framework of Dempster–Shafer evidence theory

    High-Resolution Building and Road Detection from Sentinel-2

    Mapping buildings and roads automatically with remote sensing typically requires high-resolution imagery, which is expensive to obtain and often sparsely available. In this work we demonstrate how multiple 10 m resolution Sentinel-2 images can be used to generate 50 cm resolution building and road segmentation masks. This is done by training a `student' model with access to Sentinel-2 images to reproduce the predictions of a `teacher' model which has access to corresponding high-resolution imagery. While the predictions do not have all the fine detail of the teacher model, we find that we are able to retain much of the performance: for building segmentation we achieve 78.3% mIoU, compared to the high-resolution teacher model accuracy of 85.3% mIoU. We also describe a related method for counting individual buildings in a Sentinel-2 patch which achieves R^2 = 0.91 against true counts. This work opens up new possibilities for using freely available Sentinel-2 imagery for a range of tasks that previously could only be done with high-resolution satellite imagery

    The state-of-the-art progress in cloud detection, identification, and tracking approaches: a systematic review

    A cloud is a mass of water vapor floating in the atmosphere. It is visible from the ground and can remain at a variable height for some time. Clouds are very important because their interaction with the rest of the atmosphere has a decisive influence on weather, for instance by sunlight occlusion or by bringing rain. Weather denotes atmosphere behavior and is determinant in several human activities, such as agriculture or energy capture. Therefore, cloud detection is an important process about which several methods have been investigated and published in the literature. The aim of this paper is to review some of such proposals and the papers that have been analyzed and discussed can be, in general, classified into three types. The first one is devoted to the analysis and explanation of clouds and their types, and about existing imaging systems. Regarding cloud detection, dealt with in a second part, diverse methods have been analyzed, i.e., those based on the analysis of satellite images and those based on the analysis of images from cameras located on Earth. The last part is devoted to cloud forecast and tracking. Cloud detection from both systems rely on thresholding techniques and a few machine-learning algorithms. To compute the cloud motion vectors for cloud tracking, correlation-based methods are commonly used. A few machine-learning methods are also available in the literature for cloud tracking, and have been discussed in this paper too

    Continuous change detection and classification of land cover using all available Landsat data

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityLand cover mapping and monitoring has been widely recognized as important for understanding global change and in particular, human contributions. This research emphasizes the use ofthe time domain for mapping land cover and changes in land cover using satellite images. Unlike most prior methods that compare pairs or sets of images for identifying change, this research compares observations with model predictions. Moreover, instead of classifying satellite images directly, it uses coefficients from time series models as inputs for land cover mapping. The methods developed are capable of detecting many kinds of land cover change as they occur and providing land cover maps for any given time at high temporal frequency. One key processing step of the satellite images is the elimination of "noisy" observations due to clouds, cloud shadows, and snow. I developed a new algorithm called Fmask that processes each Landsat scene individually using an object-based method. For a globally distributed set ofreference data, the overall cloud detection accuracy is 96%. A second step further improves cloud detection by using temporal information. The first application ofthe new methods based on time series analysis found change in forests in an area in Georgia and South Carolina. After the difference between observed and predicted reflectance exceeds a threshold three consecutive times a site is identified as forest disturbance. Accuracy assessment reveals that both the producers and users accuracies are higher than 95% in the spatial domain and approximately 94% in the temporal domain. The second application ofthis new approach extends the algorithm to include identification of a wide variety of land cover changes as well as land cover mapping. In this approach, the entire archive of Landsat imagery is analyzed to produce a comprehensive land cover history ofthe Boston region. The results are accurate for detecting change, with producers accuracy of 98% and users accuracies of 86% in the spatial domain and temporal accuracy of 80%. Overall, this research demonstrates the great potential for use of time series analysis of satellite images to monitor land cover change

    Spatio-temporal resolution enhancement for cloudy thermal sequences

    Many applications require remotely sensed brightness temperature (BT) data acquired with high temporal and spatial resolutions. In this regard, a viable strategy to overtake the physical limitations of space-borne sensors to achieve these data relies on fusing low temporal but high spatial resolution (HSR) data with high temporal but low spatial resolution data. The most promising methods rely on the fusion of spatially interpolated high temporal resolution data with temporally interpolated HSR data. However, the unavoidable presence of cloud masses in the acquired image sequences is often neglected, compromising the functionality and/or the effectiveness of the most of these fusion algorithms. To overcome this problem, a framework combining techniques of temporal smoothing and spatial enhancement is proposed to estimate surface BTs with high spatial and high temporal resolutions even when cloud masses corrupt the scene. Numerical results using real thermal data acquired by the SEVIRI sensor show the ability of the proposed approach to reach better performance than techniques based on either only interpolation or only spatial sharpening, even dealing with missing data due to the presence of cloud masses
