    RACER: Rapid Collaborative Exploration with a Decentralized Multi-UAV System

    Although the use of multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has great potential for fast autonomous exploration, it has received far too little attention. In this paper, we present RACER, a RApid Collaborative ExploRation approach using a fleet of decentralized UAVs. To effectively dispatch the UAVs, a pairwise interaction based on an online hgrid space decomposition is used. It ensures that all UAVs simultaneously explore distinct regions, using only asynchronous and limited communication. Further, we optimize the coverage paths of unknown space and balance the workloads partitioned to each UAV with a Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem(CVRP) formulation. Given the task allocation, each UAV constantly updates the coverage path and incrementally extracts crucial information to support the exploration planning. A hierarchical planner finds exploration paths, refines local viewpoints and generates minimum-time trajectories in sequence to explore the unknown space agilely and safely. The proposed approach is evaluated extensively, showing high exploration efficiency, scalability and robustness to limited communication. Furthermore, for the first time, we achieve fully decentralized collaborative exploration with multiple UAVs in real world.     An Integrated Real-time UAV Trajectory Optimization and Potential Field Approach for Dynamic Collision Avoidance

    peer reviewedThis paper presents an integrated approach that combines trajectory optimization and Artificial Potential Field (APF) method for real-time optimal Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) trajectory planning and dynamic collision avoidance. A minimum-time trajectory optimization problem is formulated with initial and final positions as boundary conditions and collision avoidance as constraints. It is transcribed into a nonlinear programming problem using Chebyshev pseudospectral method. The state and control histories are approximated by using Lagrange polynomials and the collocation points are used to satisfy constraints. A novel sigmoid-type collision avoidance constraint is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of Lagrange polynomial approximation in pseudospectral methods that only guarantees inequality constraint satisfaction only at nodal points. Automatic differentiation of cost function and constraints is used to quickly determine their gradient and Jacobian, respectively. An APF method is used to update the optimal control inputs for guaranteeing collision avoidance. The trajectory optimization and APF method are implemented in a closed-loop fashion continuously, but in parallel at moderate and high frequencies, respectively. The initial guess for the optimization is provided based on the previous solution.     Multi-resolution mapping and planning for UAV navigation in attitude constrained environments

    In this thesis we aim to bridge the gap between high quality map reconstruction and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) SE(3) motion planning in challenging environments with narrow openings, such as disaster areas, which requires attitude to be considered. We propose an efficient system that leverages the concept of adaptive-resolution volumetric mapping, which naturally integrates with the hierarchical decomposition of space in an octree data structure. Instead of a Truncated Signed Distance Function (TSDF), we adopt mapping of occupancy probabilities in log-odds representation, which allows representation of both surfaces, as well as the entire free, i.e.\ observed space, as opposed to unobserved space. We introduce a method for choosing resolution -on the fly- in real-time by means of a multi-scale max-min pooling of the input depth image. The notion of explicit free space mapping paired with the spatial hierarchy in the data structure, as well as map resolution, allows for collision queries, as needed for robot motion planning, at unprecedented speed. Our mapping strategy supports pinhole cameras as well as spherical sensor models. Additionally, we introduce a first-of-a-kind global minimum cost path search method based on A* that considers attitude along the path. State-of-the-art methods incorporate attitude only in the refinement stage. To make the problem tractable, our method exploits an adaptive and coarse-to-fine approach using global and local A* runs, plus an efficient method to introduce the UAV attitude in the process. We integrate our method with an SE(3) trajectory optimisation method based on a safe-flight-corridor, yielding a complete path planning pipeline. We quantitatively evaluate our mapping strategy in terms of mapping accuracy, memory, runtime performance, and planning performance showing improvements over the state-of-the-art, particularly in cases requiring high resolution maps. Furthermore, extensive evaluation is undertaken using the AirSim flight simulator under closed loop control in a set of randomised maps, allowing us to quantitatively assess our path initialisation method. We show that it achieves significantly higher success rates than the baselines, at a reduced computational burden.Open Acces

    On the motion planning & control of nonlinear robotic systems

    In the last decades, we saw a soaring interest in autonomous robots boosted not only by academia and industry, but also by the ever in- creasing demand from civil users. As a matter of fact, autonomous robots are fast spreading in all aspects of human life, we can see them clean houses, navigate through city traffic, or harvest fruits and vegetables. Almost all commercial drones already exhibit unprecedented and sophisticated skills which makes them suitable for these applications, such as obstacle avoidance, simultaneous localisation and mapping, path planning, visual-inertial odometry, and object tracking. The major limitations of such robotic platforms lie in the limited payload that can carry, in their costs, and in the limited autonomy due to finite battery capability. For this reason researchers start to develop new algorithms able to run even on resource constrained platforms both in terms of computation capabilities and limited types of endowed sensors, focusing especially on very cheap sensors and hardware. The possibility to use a limited number of sensors allowed to scale a lot the UAVs size, while the implementation of new efficient algorithms, performing the same task in lower time, allows for lower autonomy. However, the developed robots are not mature enough to completely operate autonomously without human supervision due to still too big dimensions (especially for aerial vehicles), which make these platforms unsafe for humans, and the high probability of numerical, and decision, errors that robots may make. In this perspective, this thesis aims to review and improve the current state-of-the-art solutions for autonomous navigation from a purely practical point of view.
