Sum Throughput Maximization in Multi-Tag Backscattering to Multiantenna Reader
Backscatter communication (BSC) is being realized as the core technology for
pervasive sustainable Internet-of-Things applications. However, owing to the
resource-limitations of passive tags, the efficient usage of multiple antennas
at the reader is essential for both downlink excitation and uplink detection.
This work targets at maximizing the achievable sum-backscattered-throughput by
jointly optimizing the transceiver (TRX) design at the reader and
backscattering coefficients (BC) at the tags. Since, this joint problem is
nonconvex, we first present individually-optimal designs for the TRX and BC. We
show that with precoder and {combiner} designs at the reader respectively
targeting downlink energy beamforming and uplink Wiener filtering operations,
the BC optimization at tags can be reduced to a binary power control problem.
Next, the asymptotically-optimal joint-TRX-BC designs are proposed for both low
and high signal-to-noise-ratio regimes. Based on these developments, an
iterative low-complexity algorithm is proposed to yield an efficient
jointly-suboptimal design. Thereafter, we discuss the practical utility of the
proposed designs to other application settings like wireless powered
communication networks and BSC with imperfect channel state information.
Lastly, selected numerical results, validating the analysis and shedding novel
insights, demonstrate that the proposed designs can yield significant
enhancement in the sum-backscattered throughput over existing benchmarks.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on

A Rate-Splitting Approach To Robust Multiuser MISO Transmission
For multiuser MISO systems with bounded uncertainties in the Channel State
Information (CSI), we consider two classical robust design problems: maximizing
the minimum rate subject to a transmit power constraint, and power minimization
under a rate constraint. Contrary to conventional strategies, we propose a
Rate-Splitting (RS) strategy where each message is divided into two parts, a
common part and a private part. All common parts are packed into one super
common message encoded using a shared codebook and decoded by all users, while
private parts are independently encoded and retrieved by their corresponding
users. We prove that RS-based designs achieve higher max-min Degrees of Freedom
(DoF) compared to conventional designs (NoRS) for uncertainty regions that
scale with SNR. For the special case of non-scaling uncertainty regions, RS
contrasts with NoRS and achieves a non-saturating max-min rate. In the power
minimization problem, RS is shown to combat the feasibility problem arising
from multiuser interference in NoRS. A robust design of precoders for RS is
proposed, and performance gains over NoRS are demonstrated through simulations.Comment: To appear in ICASSP 201
Beamforming Techniques for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Cellular Networks
In this paper, we develop various beamforming techniques for downlink
transmission for multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple
access (NOMA) systems. First, a beamforming approach with perfect channel state
information (CSI) is investigated to provide the required quality of service
(QoS) for all users. Taylor series approximation and semidefinite relaxation
(SDR) techniques are employed to reformulate the original non-convex power
minimization problem to a tractable one. Further, a fairness-based beamforming
approach is proposed through a max-min formulation to maintain fairness between
users. Next, we consider a robust scheme by incorporating channel
uncertainties, where the transmit power is minimized while satisfying the
outage probability requirement at each user. Through exploiting the SDR
approach, the original non-convex problem is reformulated in a linear matrix
inequality (LMI) form to obtain the optimal solution. Numerical results
demonstrate that the robust scheme can achieve better performance compared to
the non-robust scheme in terms of the rate satisfaction ratio. Further,
simulation results confirm that NOMA consumes a little over half transmit power
needed by OMA for the same data rate requirements. Hence, NOMA has the
potential to significantly improve the system performance in terms of transmit
power consumption in future 5G networks and beyond.Comment: accepted to publish in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technolog
Robust MMSE beamforming for multiantenna relay networks
In this paper, we propose a robust minimum mean square error (MMSE) based beamforming
technique for multiantenna relay broadcast channels, where a multi-antenna base station transmits signal to single antenna users with the help of a multiantenna relay. The signal transmission from the base station to the single antenna users is completed in two time slots, where the relay receives the signal from the base station in the first time slot and it then forwards the received signal to different users based on amplify and forward protocol. We propose a robust beamforming technique for sum-power
minimization problem with imperfect channel state information (CSI) between the relay and the users. This robust scheme is developed based on the worst-case optimization framework and Nemirovski
Lemma by incorporating uncertainties in the CSI. The original optimization problem is divided into three subproblems due to joint non-convexity in terms of beamforming vectors at the base station, the relay amplification matrix, and receiver coefficients. These subproblems are formulated into a convex optimization framework by exploiting Nemirovski Lemma, and an iterative algorithm is developed by
alternatively optimizing each of them with channel uncertainties. In addition, we provide an optimization framework to evaluate the achievable worst-case mean square error (MSE) of each user for a given set of design parameters. Simulation results have been provided to validate the convergence of the proposed algorithm
