Routing protocols for next generation mobile wireless sensor networks
The recent research interest in wireless sensor networks has caused the development of many new applications and subsequently, these emerging applications have ever increasing requirements. One such requirement is that of mobility, which has inspired an entirely new array of applications in the form of mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs). In terms of communications, MWSNs present a challenging environment due to the high rate at which the topology may be changing. As such, the motivation of this work is to investigate potential communications solutions, in order to satisfy the performance demands of new and future MWSN applications. As such this work begins by characterising and evaluating the requirement of a large variety of these emerging applications.
This thesis focuses on the area of routing, which is concerned with the reliable and timely delivery of data from multiple, mobile sensor nodes to a data sink. For this purpose the technique of gradient routing was identified as a suitable solution, since data can quickly be passed down a known gradient that is anchored at the sink. However, in a mobile network, keeping the gradient up-to-date is a key issue. This work proposes the novel use of a global time division multiple access (GTDMA) MAC as a solution to this problem, which mitigates the need for regularly flooding the network. Additionally, the concept of blind forwarding is utilised for its low overhead and high reliability through its inherent route diversity.
The key contribution of this thesis is in three novel routing protocols, which use the aforementioned principles. The first protocol, PHASeR, uses a hop-count metric and encapsulates data from multiple nodes in its packets. The hop-count metric was chosen because it is simple and requires no additional hardware. The inclusion of encapsulation is intended to enable the protocol to cope with network congestion. The second protocol, LASeR, utilises location awareness to maintain a gradient and performs no encapsulation. Since many applications require location awareness, the communications systems may also take advantage of this readily available information and it can be used as a gradient metric. This protocol uses no encapsulation in order to reduce delay times. The third protocol, RASeR, uses the hop-count metric as a gradient and also does not perform encapsulation. The reduced delay time and the relaxed requirement for any existing method of location awareness makes this the most widely applicable of the three protocols. In addition to analytical expressions being derived, all three protocols are thoroughly tested through simulation. Results show the protocols to improve on the state-of-the-art and yield excellent performance over varying speeds, node numbers and data generation rates. LASeR shows the lowest overhead and delay, which comes from the advantage of having available location information. Alternatively, at the expense of increased overhead, RASeR gives comparatively high performance metrics without the need for location information.
Overall, RASeR can be suitably deployed in the widest range of applications, which is taken further by including four additional modes of operation. These include a supersede mode for applications in which the timely delivery of the most recent data is prioritised. A reverse flooding mechanism, to enable the sink to broadcast control messages to the sensor nodes. An energy saving mode, which uses sleep cycles to reduce the networks power consumption, and finally a pseudo acknowledgement scheme to increase the reliability of the protocol. These additions enable RASeR to satisfy the needs of some of the most demanding MWSN applications.
In order to assess the practicality of implementation, RASeR was also evaluated using a small testbed of mobile nodes. The successful results display the protocols feasibility to be implemented on commercially available hardware and its potential to be deployed in the real world. Furthermore, a key issue in the real world deployment of networks, is security and for this reason a fourth routing protocol was designed called RASeR-S. RASeR-S is based on RASeR, but introduces the use of encryption and suggests a security framework that should be followed in order to significantly reduce the possibility of a security threat.
Whilst the main focus of this work is routing, alternative MAC layers are assessed for LASeR. Unlike the other two protocols, LASeR uses available location information to determine its gradient and as such, it is not reliant on the GTDMA MAC. For this reason several MAC layers are tested and the novel idea of dedicated sensing slots is introduced, as well as a network division multiple access scheme. The selected and proposed MACs are simulated and the GTDMA and two proposed protocols are shown to give the best results in certain scenarios.
This work demonstrates the high levels of performance that can be achieved using gradient orientated routing in a mobile network. It has also shown that the use of a GTDMA MAC is an efficient solution to the gradient maintenance problem. The high impact of this work comes from the versatility and reliability of the presented routing protocols, which means they are able to meet the requirements of a large number of MWSN applications. Additionally, given the importance of security, RASeR-S has been designed to provide a secure and adaptable routing solution for vulnerable or sensitive applications

Models for Efficient Automated Site Data Acquisition
Accurate and timely data acquisition for tracking and progress reporting is essential for efficient management and successful project delivery. Considerable research work has been conducted to develop methods utilizing automated site data acquisition for tracking and progress reporting. However, these developments are challenged by: the dynamic and noisy nature of construction jobsites; the indoor localization accuracy; and the data processing and extraction of actionable information. Limited research work attempted to study and develop customized design of wireless sensor networks to meet the above challenges and overcome limitations of utilizing off-the-shelf technologies.
The objective of this research is to study, design, configure and develop fully customized automated site data acquisition models, with a special focus on near real-time automated tracking and control of construction operations embracing cutting edge innovations in wireless and remote sensing technologies. In this context, wireless and remote sensing technologies are integrated in two customized prototypes to monitor and collect data from construction jobsites. This data is then processed and mined to generate meaningful and actionable information. The developed prototypes are expected to have wider scope of applications in construction management, such as improving construction safety, monitoring the condition of civil infrastructure and reducing energy consumption in buildings.
Two families of prototypes were developed in this research; Sensor Aided GPS (SA-GPS) prototype, which is designed and developed for tracking outdoor construction operations such as earthmoving; and Self-Calibrated Wireless Sensor Network (SC-WSN), which is designed for indoor localization and tracking of construction resources (labor, materials and equipment). These prototypes along with their hardware and software are encapsulated in a computational framework. The framework houses a set of algorithms coded in C# to enable efficient data processing and fusion that support tracking and progress reporting. Both the hardware prototypes and software algorithms were progressively tested, evaluated and re-designed using Rapid Prototyping approach. The validation process of the developed prototypes encompasses three steps; (1) simulation to validate the prototypes’ design virtually using MATLAB, (2) laboratory experiments to evaluate prototypes’ functionality in real time, and (3) testing on scaled case studies after fine-tuning the prototype design based on the results obtained from the first two steps.
The SA-GPS prototype consists of a microcontroller equipped with GPS module as well as a number of sensors such as accelerometer, barometric pressure sensor, Bluetooth proximity and strain gauges. The results of testing the developed SA-GPS prototype on scaled construction jobsite indicated that it was capable of estimating project progress within 3% mean absolute percentage error and 1% standard deviation on 16 trials, in comparison to the standalone GPS which had approximately 12% mean absolute percentage error and 2% standard deviation. The SC-WSN prototype incorporates two main features. The first is the use of the Kalman filtering and smoothing for the RSSI signal to provide more stable and predictable signal for estimating the distance between a reader and a tag. The second is the use of a developed dynamic path-loss model which continually optimizes its parameters to cope with the dynamically changing construction environment using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The laboratory testing indicated the improvement in location estimation, where the produced location estimates using SC_WSN had an average error of 0.66m in comparison to 1.67m using the raw RSSI signal. Also the results indicated 60% accuracy improvement in estimating locations using the developed dynamic model. The developed prototypes are not only expected to reduce the risk of project cost and duration overruns by timely and early detection of deviations from project plan, but also enables project managers to observe and oversee their project’s status in near real-time. It is expected that the accuracy of the developed hardware, can be achieved on large-scale real construction projects. This is attributed to the fact that the developed prototype does not require any scalable improvements on its hardware technology, nor does it require any additional computational changes to its developed algorithms and software
The Development of a Web-based Decision Support System for the Sustainable Management of Contaminated Land
Land is a finite natural resource that is increasingly getting exhausted as a result of land contamination. Land is made up of soil and groundwater, both of which have many functions for which we depend on, including provision of food and water, supporting shelter, natural flood defence, carbon sequestration, etc. Contaminants in land also pose a number of threats to public health and the environment; other natural resources; and have detrimental effects on property such as buildings, crops and livestock. The most effective method of dealing with these contaminants is to cleanup and return the sites to beneficial use. The cleanup process involves making a choice from amongst competing remediation technologies, where the wrong choice may have disastrous economic, environmental and/or social impacts. Contaminated land management is therefore much broader than the selection and implementation of remedial solutions, and requires extensive data collection and analysis at huge costs and effort.
The need for decision support in contaminated land management decision-making has long been widely recognised, and in recent years a large number of Decision Support Systems (DSS) have been developed. This thesis presents the development of a Web-based knowledge-based DSS as an integrated management framework for the risk assessment of human health from, and sustainable management of, contaminated land. The developed DSS is based on the current UK contaminated land regime, published guidelines and technical reports from the UK Environment Agency (EA) and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and other Government agencies and departments. The decision-making process of the developed DSS comprises of key stages in the risk assessment and management of contaminated land: (i) preliminary qualitative risk assessment; (ii) generic quantitative risk assessment; and (iii) options appraisal of remediation technologies and remediation design. The developed DSS requires site specific details and measured contaminant concentrations from site samples as input and produces a site specific report as output. A goal-oriented user interface for personalized semantic search

However, the two primary user interfaces positioned between users and the Web, Web browsers and search engines, have very little interest in users' goals. Present-day Web browsers provide only a thin interface between users and the Web, and present-day search engines rely solely on keyword matching. This thesis leverages large knowledge bases of semantic information to provide users with a goal-oriented Web browsing experience. By understanding the meaning of Web pages and search queries, this thesis demonstrates how Web browsers and search engines can proactively suggest content and services to users that are both contextually relevant and personalized. This thesis presents (1) Creo, a Programming by Example system that allows users to teach their computers how to automate interactions with their favorite Web sites by providing a single demonstration, (2) Miro, a Data Detector that matches the content of a Web page to high-level user goals, and allows users to perform semantic searches, and (3) Adeo, an application that streamlines browsing the Web on mobile devices, allowing users to complete actions with a minimal amount of input and output.(cont.) An evaluation with 34 subjects found that they were more effective at completing tasks when using these applications, and that the subjects would use these applications if they had access to them. COMET-AR User's Manual: COmputational MEchanics Testbed with Adaptive Refinement
The COMET-AR User's Manual provides a reference manual for the Computational Structural Mechanics Testbed with Adaptive Refinement (COMET-AR), a software system developed jointly by Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory and NASA Langley Research Center under contract NAS1-18444. The COMET-AR system is an extended version of an earlier finite element based structural analysis system called COMET, also developed by Lockheed and NASA. The primary extensions are the adaptive mesh refinement capabilities and a new "object-like" database interface that makes COMET-AR easier to extend further.
