    Authentication enhancement in command and control networks: (a study in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks)

    Intelligent transportation systems contribute to improved traffic safety by facilitating real time communication between vehicles. By using wireless channels for communication, vehicular networks are susceptible to a wide range of attacks, such as impersonation, modification, and replay. In this context, securing data exchange between intercommunicating terminals, e.g., vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, constitutes a technological challenge that needs to be addressed. Hence, message authentication is crucial to safeguard vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) from malicious attacks. The current state-of-the-art for authentication in VANETs relies on conventional cryptographic primitives, introducing significant computation and communication overheads. In this challenging scenario, physical (PHY)-layer authentication has gained popularity, which involves leveraging the inherent characteristics of wireless channels and the hardware imperfections to discriminate between wireless devices. However, PHY-layerbased authentication cannot be an alternative to crypto-based methods as the initial legitimacy detection must be conducted using cryptographic methods to extract the communicating terminal secret features. Nevertheless, it can be a promising complementary solution for the reauthentication problem in VANETs, introducing what is known as “cross-layer authentication.” This thesis focuses on designing efficient cross-layer authentication schemes for VANETs, reducing the communication and computation overheads associated with transmitting and verifying a crypto-based signature for each transmission. The following provides an overview of the proposed methodologies employed in various contributions presented in this thesis. 1. The first cross-layer authentication scheme: A four-step process represents this approach: initial crypto-based authentication, shared key extraction, re-authentication via a PHY challenge-response algorithm, and adaptive adjustments based on channel conditions. Simulation results validate its efficacy, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios while proving its resilience against active and passive attacks. 2. The second cross-layer authentication scheme: Leveraging the spatially and temporally correlated wireless channel features, this scheme extracts high entropy shared keys that can be used to create dynamic PHY-layer signatures for authentication. A 3-Dimensional (3D) scattering Doppler emulator is designed to investigate the scheme’s performance at different speeds of a moving vehicle and SNRs. Theoretical and hardware implementation analyses prove the scheme’s capability to support high detection probability for an acceptable false alarm value ≤ 0.1 at SNR ≥ 0 dB and speed ≤ 45 m/s. 3. The third proposal: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) integration for improved authentication: Focusing on enhancing PHY-layer re-authentication, this proposal explores integrating RIS technology to improve SNR directed at designated vehicles. Theoretical analysis and practical implementation of the proposed scheme are conducted using a 1-bit RIS, consisting of 64 × 64 reflective units. Experimental results show a significant improvement in the Pd, increasing from 0.82 to 0.96 at SNR = − 6 dB for multicarrier communications. 4. The fourth proposal: RIS-enhanced vehicular communication security: Tailored for challenging SNR in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios, this proposal optimises key extraction and defends against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks through selective signal strengthening. Hardware implementation studies prove its effectiveness, showcasing improved key extraction performance and resilience against potential threats. 5. The fifth cross-layer authentication scheme: Integrating PKI-based initial legitimacy detection and blockchain-based reconciliation techniques, this scheme ensures secure data exchange. Rigorous security analyses and performance evaluations using network simulators and computation metrics showcase its effectiveness, ensuring its resistance against common attacks and time efficiency in message verification. 6. The final proposal: Group key distribution: Employing smart contract-based blockchain technology alongside PKI-based authentication, this proposal distributes group session keys securely. Its lightweight symmetric key cryptography-based method maintains privacy in VANETs, validated via Ethereum’s main network (MainNet) and comprehensive computation and communication evaluations. The analysis shows that the proposed methods yield a noteworthy reduction, approximately ranging from 70% to 99%, in both computation and communication overheads, as compared to the conventional approaches. This reduction pertains to the verification and transmission of 1000 messages in total

    Analysis and Design of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) Techniques for Next Generation Wireless Communication Systems

    The current surge in wireless connectivity, anticipated to amplify significantly in future wireless technologies, brings a new wave of users. Given the impracticality of an endlessly expanding bandwidth, there’s a pressing need for communication techniques that efficiently serve this burgeoning user base with limited resources. Multiple Access (MA) techniques, notably Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA), have long addressed bandwidth constraints. However, with escalating user numbers, OMA’s orthogonality becomes limiting for emerging wireless technologies. Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), employing superposition coding, serves more users within the same bandwidth as OMA by allocating different power levels to users whose signals can then be detected using the gap between them, thus offering superior spectral efficiency and massive connectivity. This thesis examines the integration of NOMA techniques with cooperative relaying, EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart analysis, and deep learning for enhancing 6G and beyond communication systems. The adopted methodology aims to optimize the systems’ performance, spanning from bit-error rate (BER) versus signal to noise ratio (SNR) to overall system efficiency and data rates. The primary focus of this thesis is the investigation of the integration of NOMA with cooperative relaying, EXIT chart analysis, and deep learning techniques. In the cooperative relaying context, NOMA notably improved diversity gains, thereby proving the superiority of combining NOMA with cooperative relaying over just NOMA. With EXIT chart analysis, NOMA achieved low BER at mid-range SNR as well as achieved optimal user fairness in the power allocation stage. Additionally, employing a trained neural network enhanced signal detection for NOMA in the deep learning scenario, thereby producing a simpler signal detection for NOMA which addresses NOMAs’ complex receiver problem

    Localizability Optimization for Multi Robot Systems and Applications to Ultra-Wide Band Positioning

    RÉSUMÉ: RÉSUMÉ Les Systèmes Multi-Robots (SMR) permettent d’effectuer des missions de manière efficace et robuste du fait de leur redondance. Cependant, les robots étant des véhicules autonomes, ils nécessitent un positionnement précis en temps réel. Les techniques de localisation qui utilisent des Mesures Relatives (MR) entre les robots, pouvant être des distances ou des angles, sont particulièrement adaptées puisqu’elles peuvent bénéficier d’algorithmes coopératifs au sein du SMR afin d’améliorer la précision pour l’ensemble des robots. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons des stratégies pour améliorer la localisabilité des SMR, qui est fonction de deux facteurs. Premièrement, la géométrie du SMR influence fondamentalement la qualité de son positionnement pour des MR bruitées. Deuxièmement, les erreurs de mesures dépendent fortement de la technologie utilisée. Dans nos expériences, nous nous focalisons sur la technologie UWB (Ultra-Wide Band), qui est populaire pour le positionnement des robots en environnement intérieur en raison de son coût modéré et sa haute précision. Par conséquent, une partie de notre travail est consacrée à la correction des erreurs de mesure UWB afin de fournir un système de navigation opérationnel. En particulier, nous proposons une méthode de calibration des biais systématiques et un algorithme d’atténuation des trajets multiples pour les mesures de distance en milieu intérieur. Ensuite, nous proposons des Fonctions de Coût de Localisabilité (FCL) pour caractériser la géométrie du SMR, et sa capacité à se localiser. Pour cela, nous utilisons la Borne Inférieure de Cramér-Rao (BICR) en vue de quantifier les incertitudes de positionnement. Par la suite, nous fournissons des schémas d’optimisation décentralisés pour les FCL sous l’hypothèse de MR gaussiennes ou log-normales. En effet, puisque le SMR peut se déplacer, certains de ses robots peuvent être déployés afin de minimiser la FCL. Cependant, l’optimisation de la localisabilité doit être décentralisée pour être adaptée à des SMRs à grande échelle. Nous proposons également des extensions des FCL à des scénarios où les robots embarquent plusieurs capteurs, où les mesures se dégradent avec la distance, ou encore où des informations préalables sur la localisation des robots sont disponibles, permettant d’utiliser la BICR bayésienne. Ce dernier résultat est appliqué au placement d’ancres statiques connaissant la distribution statistique des MR et au maintien de la localisabilité des robots qui se localisent par filtrage de Kalman. Les contributions théoriques de notre travail ont été validées à la fois par des simulations à grande échelle et des expériences utilisant des SMR terrestres. Ce manuscrit est rédigé par publication, il est constitué de quatre articles évalués par des pairs et d’un chapitre supplémentaire. ABSTRACT: ABSTRACT Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) are increasingly interesting to perform tasks eÿciently and robustly. However, since the robots are autonomous vehicles, they require accurate real-time positioning. Localization techniques that use relative measurements (RMs), i.e., distances or angles, between the robots are particularly suitable because they can take advantage of cooperative schemes within the MRS in order to enhance the precision of its positioning. In this thesis, we propose strategies to improve the localizability of the SMR, which is a function of two factors. First, the geometry of the MRS fundamentally influences the quality of its positioning under noisy RMs. Second, the measurement errors are strongly influenced by the technology chosen to gather the RMs. In our experiments, we focus on the Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology, which is popular for indoor robot positioning because of its mod-erate cost and high accuracy. Therefore, one part of our work is dedicated to correcting the UWB measurement errors in order to provide an operable navigation system. In particular, we propose a calibration method for systematic biases and a multi-path mitigation algorithm for indoor distance measurements. Then, we propose Localizability Cost Functions (LCF) to characterize the MRS’s geometry, using the Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) as a proxy to quantify the positioning uncertainties. Subsequently, we provide decentralized optimization schemes for the LCF under an assumption of Gaussian or Log-Normal RMs. Indeed, since the MRS can move, some of its robots can be deployed in order to decrease the LCF. However, the optimization of the localizability must be decentralized for large-scale MRS. We also propose extensions of LCFs to scenarios where robots carry multiple sensors, where the RMs deteriorate with distance, and finally, where prior information on the robots’ localization is available, allowing the use of the Bayesian CRLB. The latter result is applied to static anchor placement knowing the statistical distribution of the MRS and localizability maintenance of robots using Kalman filtering. The theoretical contributions of our work have been validated both through large-scale simulations and experiments using ground MRS.     This reprint aims to collect state-of-the-art research contributions that address challenges in the emerging 5G networks design, dimensioning and optimization. Designing, dimensioning and optimization of communication networks resources and services have been an inseparable part of telecom network development. The latter must convey a large volume of traffic, providing service to traffic streams with highly differentiated requirements in terms of bit-rate and service time, required quality of service and quality of experience parameters. Such a communication infrastructure presents many important challenges, such as the study of necessary multi-layer cooperation, new protocols, performance evaluation of different network parts, low layer network design, network management and security issues, and new technologies in general, which will be discussed in this book

    Point-to-Multipoint Services on Fifth-Generation Mobile Networks

    [ES] Esta disertación cubre el estado del arte en LTE eMBMS Release 14, también conocido como Enhanced Television Services (ENTV). ENTV trajo un conjunto de mejoras, tanto a nivel radio como a nivel de núcleo, que transformó a eMBMS en un estándar de televisión terrestre completo. La última versión de esta tecnología se denomina LTE-based 5G Broadcast; pero no usa New Radio ni el núcleo 5G. Para proveer una solución nativa 5G de servicios punto-a-multipunto, hubo investigación en entornos acad\'emicos y colaboraciones público-privada. La iniciativa más notable en este aspecto fue el proyecto del Horizon 2020 5G-Xcast, que transcurrió de 2017 a 2019. 5G-Xcast produjo varias soluciones a nivel de arquitectura, desde la perspectiva de provisión de contenidos, nuevas funciones de red interoperables con el núcleo 5G, hasta modificaciones a la interfaz aire basada en New Radio. Los hallazgos del proyecto están descritos en esta tesis. La tesis incluye dos ejemplos de eMBMS aplicados a verticales diferentes, una para el uso de eMBMS en entornos industriales, y otra presentando eMBMS como un sistema SAP. Incluir servicios punto-a-multipunto como un modo adicional celular trae algunos desafíos, como ya mostró la estandarización de eMBMS: las redes de radiodifusión terrestre y las redes celulares son muy distintas entre ellas. Encontrar una forma de onda viable para ambas infraestructuras es complejo. Esta tesis ofrece un punto de vista distinto al problema: un escenario de colaboración entre cadenas televisivas y operadores móviles, donde la infraestructura de radiodifusión y móvil son compartidas. Este concepto se ha definido como Convergence of Terrestrial and Mobile Networks. Las tecnologías elegidas para converger son ATSC 3.0 y 5G, usando el Advanced Traffic Steering, Switching and Splitting (ATSSS). ATSSS está compuesto de una serie de procedimientos, interfaces, funciones de red, para permitir el uso compartido de un acceso 3GPP con uno non-3GPP, como Wi-Fi. Sin embargo, el uso de ATSSS para juntar radiodifusión y celular no es trivial, ya que ATSSS no fue dise\~{n}ado para enlaces radio unidireccionales como ATSC 3.0. Estas limitaciones son descritas en detalle, y una propuesta para solventarlas tambi\'en está incluida. La solución se basa en Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), y se usa como ejemplo para la provisión de Convergent Services (File Repair y Video Offloading). La tesis concluye con una descripción de Release 17 5MBS, con los nuevos conceptos introducidos. 5MBS es capaz de cambiar entre unicast, multicast y broadcast; dependiendo del servicio, la ubicación geográfica de los usuarios, y las capacidades de la infraestructura móvil involucradas. Para evaluar 5MBS, se ha realizado un estudio de prestaciones, basado en comunicaciones multicast dentro del núcleo de red 5G. Este prototipo 5MBS forma parte del laboratorio VLC Campus 5G, y utiliza el software comercial Open5GCore como base del desarrollo. El modelo de sistema para la experimentación esta formado por un servidor de vídeo, que se conecta al Open5GCore y a las funciones de red mejoradas con funcionalidades 5MBS. Estas funciones de red envían el contenido mediante punto-a-multipunto a un entorno radio y terminales simulados. ENTV provided a suite of radio and core enhancements that made eMBMS into a viable terrestrial broadcast standard. The latest iteration of this technology is known as LTE-based 5G Broadcast; even though it is not New Radio or 5G Core based. To bridge this gap, research efforts by academia, public and private enterprises evaluated how to provide a 5G-based solution for point-to-multipoint services. The most notable effort in this regard is the Horizon 2020 project 5G-Xcast, which ran from 2017 to 2019. 5G-Xcast provided several architectural solutions, from the content delivery perspective down to air interface specifics; providing new waveforms based on New Radio and Network Functions interoperable with a Release 15 5G Core. The findings are summarized in this thesis. Two examples of eMBMS applied to different verticals are included in the thesis, one for the use of eMBMS in industrial environments, and the other using eMBMS as a PWS technology. Providing point-to-multipoint services as another cellular service poses some problems, as the standardization process of eMBMS showed: the broadcast infrastructure is different than the cellular one. Having a waveform that is suited for both scenarios is a difficult endeavour. The thesis provides a new perspective into this problem: Having existing Terrestrial Broadcast standards and infrastructure be the point-to-multipoint solution of 5G, where mobile operators and broadcasters collaborate together. This is defined in the dissertation as Convergence of Terrestrial and Mobile Networks. The technologies chosen to be converged together were ATSC 3.0 and 5G; using the existing Release 16 framework known as Advanced Traffic Steering, Switching and Splitting (ATSSS). ATSSS is a series of procedures, interfaces, new Network Functions, to allow the joint use of a 3GPP Access Network alongside a non-3GPP one, like Wi-Fi. However, the use of ATSSS for cellular plus broadcast brings challenges, as the ATSSS technology was not designed to be used with a unidirectional access network like ATSC 3.0. These limitations are described in detail, and an architectural proposal that overcomes the limitations is proposed. This solution is based on Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), and how to provide Convergent Services (i.e File Repair and Video Offloading) is shown. The thesis concludes with a description of Release 17 5MBS, including the new concepts introduced. 5MBS features the capacity of switching between unicast, multicast and broadcast; depending on the service addressed, the geographical location of the users, and the capability of the RAN infrastructure targeted. In order to evaluate 5MBS, a performance study of the use of multicast inside the 5G Core has been carried out. The 5MBS prototype was developed as part of the VLC Campus 5G laboratory, using the commercial software Open5GCore which provides the libraries and Network Functions to deploy your own 5G Private Network in testing environments. The system model of the experiment is formed by a video server, connected to the Open5GCore and the 5MBS enhanced functions; which will deliver the content to an emulated RAN environment hosting virtual gNBs and devices.     Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in 5G communication

    Green communication technology is expected to be widely adopted in future generation networks to improve energy efficiency and reliability of wireless communication network. Among the green communication technologies,simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is adopted for its flexible energy harvesting technology through the radio frequency (RF) signa lthati sused for information transmission. Even though existing SWIPT techniques are flexible and adoptable for the wireless communication networks, the power and time resources of the signal need to be shared between infor- mation transmission and RF energy harvesting, and this compromises the quality of the signal. Therefore,SWIP Ttechniques need to be designed to allow an efficient resource allocation for communication and energy harvesting. The goal oft his thesisis to design SWIP Ttechniques that allow efficient,reliable and secure joint communications and power transference. A problem associated to SWIPT techniques combined with multi carrier signals is that the increased power requirements inherent to energy harvesting purposes can exacerbate nonlinear distortion effects at the transmitter. Therefore, we evaluate nonlinear distortion and present feasible solutions to mitigate the impact of nonlinear distortion effects on the performance.Another goal of the thesisis to take advantage of the energy harvesting signals in SWIP Ttechniques for channel estimation and security purposes.Theperformance of these SWIPT techniques is evaluated analytically, and those results are validated by simulations. It is shownthatthe proposed SWIPT schemes can have excellent performance, out performing conventional SWIPT schemes.Espera-se que aschamadas tecnologiasde green communications sejam amplamente ado- tadas em futuras redes de comunicação sem fios para melhorar a sua eficiência energética a fiabilidade.Entre estas,encontram-se as tecnologias SWIPT (Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transference), nas quais um sinal radio é usado para transferir simultaneamente potência e informações.Embora as técnicas SWIPT existentes sejam fle- xíveis e adequadas para as redes de comunicações sem fios, os recursos de energia e tempo do sinal precisam ser compartilhados entre a transmissão de informações e de energia, o que pode comprometer a qualidade do sinal. Deste modo,as técnicas SWIPT precisam ser projetadas para permitir uma alocação eficiente de recursos para comunicação e recolha de energia. O objetivo desta tese é desenvolver técnicas SWIPT que permitam transferência de energia e comunicações eficientes,fiáveis e seguras.Um problema associado às técnicas SWIPT combinadas com sinais multi-portadora são as dificuldades de amplificação ine- rentes à combinação de sinais de transmissão de energia com sinais de transferência de dados, que podem exacerbar os efeitos de distorção não-linear nos sinais transmitidos. Deste modo, um dos objectivos desta tese é avaliar o impacto da distorção não-linear em sinais SWIPT, e apresentar soluções viáveis para mitigar os efeitos da distorção não-linear no desempenho da transmissão de dados.Outro objetivo da tese é aproveitar as vantagens dos sinais de transferência de energia em técnicas SWIPT para efeitos de estimação de canal e segurança na comunicação.Os desempenhos dessas técnicas SWIPT são avaliados analiticamente,sendo os respectivos resultados validados por simulações.É mostrado que os esquemas SWIPT propostos podem ter excelente desempenho, superando esquemas SWIPT convencionais

    Downlink Cell-Free Fixed Wireless Access: Architectures, Physical Realities and Research Opportunities

    Recently a new paradigm of wireless access, termed as cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), has drawn significant research interest. Its primary distinction from conventional massive MIMO aided cellular networks is the ability to eliminate the detrimental inter-cell interference (ICI), or to convert ICI into extra power for the intended signal via a multi-cell cooperation approach originated from network MIMO. However, the information-theoretical limit of cell-free access is achieved at the expense of large network configuration overhead and high MIMO processing complexity. Because of the dynamic nature of wireless channels, the global channel state information (CSI) invoked for network MIMO quickly becomes outdated, leading to performance degradation. This paper focuses on the cell-free implementation of fixed wireless access (FWA), a complementary solution to fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) where the latter is prohibitively expensive. In particular, we discuss the centralisation architectures and channel characteristics of cellfree FWA, as well as their joint implications on imperfect CSI performance. Moreover, measurement-based offline simulations show that the long coherence time ('quasi-static') assumption of real-world FWA channels is only valid against a completely motionless background, and thus it should not be used in FWA system design or performance analysis.
