Joint Scheduling of URLLC and eMBB Traffic in 5G Wireless Networks
Emerging 5G systems will need to efficiently support both enhanced mobile
broadband traffic (eMBB) and ultra-low-latency communications (URLLC) traffic.
In these systems, time is divided into slots which are further sub-divided into
minislots. From a scheduling perspective, eMBB resource allocations occur at
slot boundaries, whereas to reduce latency URLLC traffic is pre-emptively
overlapped at the minislot timescale, resulting in selective
superposition/puncturing of eMBB allocations. This approach enables minimal
URLLC latency at a potential rate loss to eMBB traffic.
We study joint eMBB and URLLC schedulers for such systems, with the dual
objectives of maximizing utility for eMBB traffic while immediately satisfying
URLLC demands. For a linear rate loss model (loss to eMBB is linear in the
amount of URLLC superposition/puncturing), we derive an optimal joint
scheduler. Somewhat counter-intuitively, our results show that our dual
objectives can be met by an iterative gradient scheduler for eMBB traffic that
anticipates the expected loss from URLLC traffic, along with an URLLC demand
scheduler that is oblivious to eMBB channel states, utility functions and
allocation decisions of the eMBB scheduler. Next we consider a more general
class of (convex/threshold) loss models and study optimal online joint
eMBB/URLLC schedulers within the broad class of channel state dependent but
minislot-homogeneous policies. A key observation is that unlike the linear rate
loss model, for the convex and threshold rate loss models, optimal eMBB and
URLLC scheduling decisions do not de-couple and joint optimization is necessary
to satisfy the dual objectives. We validate the characteristics and benefits of

Online Predictive Optimization Framework for Stochastic Demand-Responsive Transit Services
This study develops an online predictive optimization framework for
dynamically operating a transit service in an area of crowd movements. The
proposed framework integrates demand prediction and supply optimization to
periodically redesign the service routes based on recently observed demand. To
predict demand for the service, we use Quantile Regression to estimate the
marginal distribution of movement counts between each pair of serviced
locations. The framework then combines these marginals into a joint demand
distribution by constructing a Gaussian copula, which captures the structure of
correlation between the marginals. For supply optimization, we devise a linear
programming model, which simultaneously determines the route structure and the
service frequency according to the predicted demand. Importantly, our framework
both preserves the uncertainty structure of future demand and leverages this
for robust route optimization, while keeping both components decoupled. We
evaluate our framework using a real-world case study of autonomous mobility in
a university campus in Denmark. The results show that our framework often
obtains the ground truth optimal solution, and can outperform conventional
methods for route optimization, which do not leverage full predictive

An Efficient Requirement-Aware Attachment Policy for Future Millimeter Wave Vehicular Networks
The automotive industry is rapidly evolving towards connected and autonomous
vehicles, whose ever more stringent data traffic requirements might exceed the
capacity of traditional technologies for vehicular networks. In this scenario,
densely deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations is a promising
approach to provide very high transmission speeds to the vehicles. However,
mmWave signals suffer from high path and penetration losses which might render
the communication unreliable and discontinuous. Coexistence between mmWave and
Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication systems has therefore been considered
to guarantee increased capacity and robustness through heterogeneous
networking. Following this rationale, we face the challenge of designing fair
and efficient attachment policies in heterogeneous vehicular networks.
Traditional methods based on received signal quality criteria lack
consideration of the vehicle's individual requirements and traffic demands, and
lead to suboptimal resource allocation across the network. In this paper we
propose a Quality-of-Service (QoS) aware attachment scheme which biases the
cell selection as a function of the vehicular service requirements, preventing
the overload of transmission links. Our simulations demonstrate that the
proposed strategy significantly improves the percentage of vehicles satisfying
application requirements and delivers efficient and fair association compared

Certainty Closure: Reliable Constraint Reasoning with Incomplete or Erroneous Data
Constraint Programming (CP) has proved an effective paradigm to model and
solve difficult combinatorial satisfaction and optimisation problems from
disparate domains. Many such problems arising from the commercial world are
permeated by data uncertainty. Existing CP approaches that accommodate
uncertainty are less suited to uncertainty arising due to incomplete and
erroneous data, because they do not build reliable models and solutions
guaranteed to address the user's genuine problem as she perceives it. Other
fields such as reliable computation offer combinations of models and associated
methods to handle these types of uncertain data, but lack an expressive
framework characterising the resolution methodology independently of the model.
We present a unifying framework that extends the CP formalism in both model
and solutions, to tackle ill-defined combinatorial problems with incomplete or
erroneous data. The certainty closure framework brings together modelling and
solving methodologies from different fields into the CP paradigm to provide
reliable and efficient approches for uncertain constraint problems. We
demonstrate the applicability of the framework on a case study in network
diagnosis. We define resolution forms that give generic templates, and their
associated operational semantics, to derive practical solution methods for

On robust network coding subgraph construction under uncertainty
We consider the problem of network coding subgraph
construction in networks where there is uncertainty about
link loss rates. For a given set of scenarios specified by an uncertainty
set of link loss rates, we provide a robust optimization-based
formulation to construct a single subgraph that would work
relatively well across all scenarios. We show that this problem
is coNP-hard in general for both objectives: minimizing cost
of subgraph construction and maximizing throughput given a
cost constraint. To solve the problem tractably, we approximate
the problem by introducing path constraints, which results
in polynomial time-solvable solution in terms of the problem
size. The simulation results show that the robust optimization
solution is better and more stable than the deterministic solution
in terms of worst-case performance. From these results, we
compare the tractability of robust network design problems with
different uncertain network components and different problem
formulations
Robust and stochastic approaches to network capacity design under demand uncertainty
This thesis considers the network capacity design problem with demand uncertainty using the stochastic, robust and distributionally robust stochastic optimization approaches (DRSO). Network modeling in itself has found wide areas of application in most fields of human endeavor. The network would normally consist of source (origin) and sink (destination) nodes connected by arcs that allow for flows of an entity from the origin to the destination nodes. In this thesis, a special type of the minimum cost flow problem is addressed, the multi-commodity network flow problem. Commodities are the flow types that are transported on a shared network. Offered demands are, for the most part, unknown or uncertain, hence a model that immune against this uncertainty becomes the focus as well as the practicability of such models in the industry. This problem falls under the two-stage optimization framework where a decision is delayed in time to adjust for the first decision earlier made. The first stage decision is called the "here and now", while the second stage traffic re-adjustment is the "wait and see" decision. In the literature, the decision-maker is often believed to know the shape of the uncertainty, hence we address this by considering a data-driven uncertainty set. The research also addressed the non-linearity of cost function despite the abundance of literature assuming linearity and models proposed for this. This thesis consist of four main chapters excluding the "Introduction" chapter and the "Approaches to Optimization under Uncertainty" chapter where the methodologies are reviewed. The first of these four, Chapter 3, proposes the two models for the Robust Network Capacity Expansion Problem (RNCEP) with cost non-linearity. These two are the RNCEP with fixed-charge cost and RNCEP with piecewise-linear cost. The next chapter, Chapter 4, compares the RNCEP models under two types of uncertainties in order to address the issue of usefulness in a real world setting. The resulting two robust models are also comapared with the stochastic optimization model with distribution mean. Chapter 5 re-examines the earlier problem using machine learning approaches to generate the two uncertainty sets while the last of these chapters, Chapter 6, investigates DRSO model to network capacity planning and proposes an efficient solution technique
Boltzmann meets Nash: Energy-efficient routing in optical networks under uncertainty
Motivated by the massive deployment of power-hungry data centers for service
provisioning, we examine the problem of routing in optical networks with the
aim of minimizing traffic-driven power consumption. To tackle this issue,
routing must take into account energy efficiency as well as capacity
considerations; moreover, in rapidly-varying network environments, this must be
accomplished in a real-time, distributed manner that remains robust in the
presence of random disturbances and noise. In view of this, we derive a pricing
scheme whose Nash equilibria coincide with the network's socially optimum
states, and we propose a distributed learning method based on the Boltzmann
distribution of statistical mechanics. Using tools from stochastic calculus, we
show that the resulting Boltzmann routing scheme exhibits remarkable
convergence properties under uncertainty: specifically, the long-term average
of the network's power consumption converges within of its
minimum value in time which is at most ,
irrespective of the fluctuations' magnitude; additionally, if the network
admits a strict, non-mixing optimum state, the algorithm converges to it -
again, no matter the noise level. Our analysis is supplemented by extensive
numerical simulations which show that Boltzmann routing can lead to a
significant decrease in power consumption over basic, shortest-path routing

Distribution planning in a weather-dependent scenario with stochastic travel times: a simheuristics approach
In real-life logistics, distribution plans might be affected by weather conditions (rain, snow, and fog), since they might have a significant effect on traveling times and, therefore, on total distribution costs. In this paper, the distribution problem is modeled as a multi-depot vehicle routing problem with stochastic traveling times. These traveling times are not only stochastic in nature but the specific probability distribution used to model them depends on the particular weather conditions on the delivery day. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, a simheuristic approach combining simulation within a biased-randomized heuristic framework is proposed. As the computational experiments will show, our simulation-optimization algorithm is able to provide high-quality solutions to this NP-hard problem in short computing times even for large-scale instances.
