Robust Multi-criteria Service Composition in Information Systems
Service compositions are used to implement business processes in a variety of application domains. A quality of service (QoS)-aware selection of the service to be composed involves multiple, usually conflicting and possibly uncertain QoS attributes. A multi-criteria solution approach is desired to generate a set of alternative service selections. In addition, the uncertainty of QoSattributes is neglected in existing solution approaches. Hence, the need for service reconfigurations is imposed to avoid the violation of QoS restrictions. The researched problem is NP-hard. This article presents a heuristic multicriteria service selection approach that is designed to determine a Pareto frontier of alternative service selections in a reasonable amount of time. Taking into account the uncertainty of response times, the obtained service selections are robust with respect to the constrained execution time. The proposed solution approach is based on the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA)-II extended by heuristics that exploit problem specific characteristics of the QoS-aware service selection. The applicability of the solution approach is demonstrated by a simulation study
SAMI: Service-Based Arbitrated Multi-Tier Infrastructure for Mobile Cloud Computing
Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is the state-ofthe- art mobile computing
technology aims to alleviate resource poverty of mobile devices. Recently,
several approaches and techniques have been proposed to augment mobile devices
by leveraging cloud computing. However, long-WAN latency and trust are still
two major issues in MCC that hinder its vision. In this paper, we analyze MCC
and discuss its issues. We leverage Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to
propose an arbitrated multi-tier infrastructure model named SAMI for MCC. Our
architecture consists of three major layers, namely SOA, arbitrator, and
infrastructure. The main strength of this architecture is in its multi-tier
infrastructure layer which leverages infrastructures from three main sources of
Clouds, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and MNOs' authorized dealers. On top
of the infrastructure layer, an arbitrator layer is designed to classify
Services and allocate them the suitable resources based on several metrics such
as resource requirement, latency and security. Utilizing SAMI facilitate
development and deployment of service-based platform-neutral mobile
applications.Comment: 6 full pages, accepted for publication in IEEE MobiCC'12 conference,

Biology of Applied Digital Ecosystems
A primary motivation for our research in Digital Ecosystems is the desire to
exploit the self-organising properties of biological ecosystems. Ecosystems are
thought to be robust, scalable architectures that can automatically solve
complex, dynamic problems. However, the biological processes that contribute to
these properties have not been made explicit in Digital Ecosystems research.
Here, we discuss how biological properties contribute to the self-organising
features of biological ecosystems, including population dynamics, evolution, a
complex dynamic environment, and spatial distributions for generating local
interactions. The potential for exploiting these properties in artificial
systems is then considered. We suggest that several key features of biological
ecosystems have not been fully explored in existing digital ecosystems, and
discuss how mimicking these features may assist in developing robust, scalable
self-organising architectures. An example architecture, the Digital Ecosystem,
is considered in detail. The Digital Ecosystem is then measured experimentally
through simulations, with measures originating from theoretical ecology, to
confirm its likeness to a biological ecosystem. Including the responsiveness to
requests for applications from the user base, as a measure of the 'ecological
succession' (development).Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure, conferenc
Design of an innovation platform for manufacturing SMES
This paper reports on the conception of a collaborative, internet-based innovation platform with semantic capabilities, which implements a new methodology for the adoption of a systematic innovation process in globally-acting networked SMEs. The main objective of the innovation platform is to stimulate the generation of ideas, the selection of good ideas and their ultimate implementation. The platform will support SMEs to manage and implement the complex innovation processes arisen in a networked environment, taking into account their internal and external links, by enabling an open multi-agent focused innovation system, facilitating customer, provider, supplier and employee- focused innovation. The solution is specifically focused on the needs of manufacturing SMEs and will observe product, process and management innovation. The paper presents the key elements of the innovation model and makes references to a novel approach concerning the development of a robust and flexible Central Knowledge Repository for the innovation platform

Setting an integrated soil monitoring system for Malta : strategy, feasibility and recommendations
Chapter 6Since 2010, MEPA has embarked on a project (which attracted co-funded ERDF
assistance) (1) to develop a multi-thematic environment strategy that would lead to
updating of its data/ information monitoring capabilities for a number of environmental
sectors. The monitoring and continuous evaluation of soil properties is one important
sector within this project. Essentially, a multi-criterion assessment of existing available
information has been carried out with a view to objectively chart the most appropriate
process to carry out a pilot field sampling by testing a pre-agreed set of indicators. The
latter were established after taking into consideration all degradation pressures threatening
the continued sustainability of this resource.
Multi-criterion analysis was carried out by means of a limited set of soil-related
datasets published in past editions of Malta’s State of the Environment Report in order
to support a number of objectives stipulated within the Project’s ambitious Terms of
Reference. Information was derived from earlier attempts to establish a soil information
system for Malta.
All soil degradation threats, officially determined by the European Commission’s
Technical Working Groups, have been taken into consideration within the aforementioned
project and its research methodology with a view of establishing a shared GIS environment
in accordance with state-of-the-art information dissemination standards.peer-reviewe
Forum Session at the First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC03)
The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers
Attack-Surface Metrics, OSSTMM and Common Criteria Based Approach to “Composable Security” in Complex Systems
In recent studies on Complex Systems and Systems-of-Systems theory, a huge effort has been put to cope with behavioral problems, i.e. the possibility of controlling a desired overall or end-to-end behavior by acting on the individual elements that constitute the system itself. This problem is particularly important in the “SMART” environments, where the huge number of devices, their significant computational capabilities as well as their tight interconnection produce a complex architecture for which it is difficult to predict (and control) a desired behavior; furthermore, if the scenario is allowed to dynamically evolve through the modification of both topology and subsystems composition, then the control problem becomes a real challenge. In this perspective, the purpose of this paper is to cope with a specific class of control problems in complex systems, the “composability of security functionalities”, recently introduced by the European Funded research through the pSHIELD and nSHIELD projects (ARTEMIS-JU programme). In a nutshell, the objective of this research is to define a control framework that, given a target security level for a specific application scenario, is able to i) discover the system elements, ii) quantify the security level of each element as well as its contribution to the security of the overall system, and iii) compute the control action to be applied on such elements to reach the security target. The main innovations proposed by the authors are: i) the definition of a comprehensive methodology to quantify the security of a generic system independently from the technology and the environment and ii) the integration of the derived metrics into a closed-loop scheme that allows real-time control of the system. The solution described in this work moves from the proof-of-concepts performed in the early phase of the pSHIELD research and enrich es it through an innovative metric with a sound foundation, able to potentially cope with any kind of pplication scenarios (railways, automotive, manufacturing, ...)
