Robust optimization for energy transactions in multi-microgrids under uncertainty
Independent operation of single microgrids (MGs) faces problems such as low self-consumption of local renewable energy, high operation cost and frequent power exchange with the grid. Interconnecting multiple MGs as a multi-microgrid (MMG) is an effective way to improve operational and economic performance. However, ensuring the optimal collaborative operation of a MMG is a challenging problem, especially under disturbances of intermittent renewable energy. In this paper, the economic and collaborative operation of MMGs is formulated as a unit commitment problem to describe the discrete characteristics of energy transaction combinations among MGs. A two-stage adaptive robust optimization based collaborative operation approach for a residential MMG is constructed to derive the scheduling scheme which minimizes the MMG operating cost under the worst realization of uncertain PV output. Transformed by its KKT optimality conditions, the reformulated model is efficiently solved by a column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) method. Case studies verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and evaluate the benefits of energy transactions in MMGs. The results show that the developed MMG operation approach is able to minimize the daily MMG operating cost while mitigating the disturbances of uncertainty in renewable energy sources. Compared to the non-interactive model, the proposed model can not only reduce the MMG operating cost but also mitigate the frequent energy interaction between the MMG and the grid
Capturing Distribution Grid-Integrated Solar Variability and Uncertainty Using Microgrids
The variable nature of the solar generation and the inherent uncertainty in
solar generation forecasts are two challenging issues for utility grids,
especially as the distribution grid integrated solar generation proliferates.
This paper offers to utilize microgrids as local solutions for mitigating these
negative drawbacks and helping the utility grid in hosting a higher penetration
of solar generation. A microgrid optimal scheduling model based on robust
optimization is developed to capture solar generation variability and
uncertainty. Numerical simulations on a test feeder indicate the effectiveness
of the proposed model.Comment: IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 201
An Evolutionary Computational Approach for the Problem of Unit Commitment and Economic Dispatch in Microgrids under Several Operation Modes
In the last decades, new types of generation technologies have emerged and have been gradually integrated into the existing power systems, moving their classical architectures to distributed systems. Despite the positive features associated to this paradigm, new problems arise such as coordination and uncertainty. In this framework, microgrids constitute an effective solution to deal with the coordination and operation of these distributed energy resources. This paper proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to address the combined problem of Unit Commitment (UC) and Economic Dispatch (ED). With this end, a model of a microgrid is introduced together with all the control variables and physical constraints. To optimally operate the microgrid, three operation modes are introduced. The first two attend to optimize economical and environmental factors, while the last operation mode considers the errors induced by the uncertainties in the demand forecasting. Therefore, it achieves a robust design that guarantees the power supply for different confidence levels. Finally, the algorithm was applied to an example scenario to illustrate its performance. The achieved simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades TEC2016-80242-PMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad PCIN-2015-043Universidad de Sevilla Programa propio de I+D+
A New Efficient Stochastic Energy Management Technique for Interconnected AC Microgrids
Cooperating interconnected microgrids with the Distribution System Operation
(DSO) can lead to an improvement in terms of operation and reliability. This
paper investigates the optimal operation and scheduling of interconnected
microgrids highly penetrated by renewable energy resources (DERs). Moreover, an
efficient stochastic framework based on the Unscented Transform (UT) method is
proposed to model uncertainties associated with the hourly market price, hourly
load demand and DERs output power. Prior to the energy management, a newly
developed linearization technique is employed to linearize nodal equations
extracted from the AC power flow. The proposed stochastic problem is formulated
as a single-objective optimization problem minimizing the interconnected AC MGs
cost function. In order to validate the proposed technique, a modified IEEE 69
bus network is studied as the test case
Optimal frequency control in microgrid system using fractional order PID controller using Krill Herd algorithm
This paper investigates the use of fractional order Proportional, Integral and Derivative (FOPID) controllers for the frequency and power regulation in a microgrid power system. The proposed microgrid system composes of renewable energy resources such as solar and wind generators, diesel engine generators as a secondary source to support the principle generators, and along with different energy storage devices like fuel cell, battery and flywheel. Due to the intermittent nature of integrated renewable energy like wind turbine and photovoltaic generators, which depend on the weather conditions and climate change this affects the microgrid stability by considered fluctuation in frequency and power deviations which can be improved using the selected controller. The fractional-order controller has five parameters in comparison with the classical PID controller, and that makes it more flexible and robust against the microgrid perturbation. The Fractional Order PID controller parameters are optimized using a new optimization technique called Krill Herd which selected as a suitable optimization method in comparison with other techniques like Particle Swarm Optimization. The results show better performance of this system using the fractional order PID controller-based Krill Herd algorithm by eliminates the fluctuations in frequency and power deviation in comparison with the classical PID controller. The obtained results are compared with the fractional order PID controller optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization. The proposed system is simulated under nominal conditions and using the disconnecting of storage devices like battery and Flywheel system in order to test the robustness of the proposed methods and the obtained results are compared.У статті досліджено використання регуляторів пропорційного, інтегрального та похідного дробового порядку (FOPID) для регулювання частоти та потужності в електромережі. Distributed MPC for coordinated energy efficiency utilization in microgrid systems
To improve the renewable energy utilization of distributed microgrid systems, this paper presents an optimal distributed model predictive control strategy to coordinate energy management among microgrid systems. In particular, through information exchange among systems, each microgrid in the network, which includes renewable generation, storage systems, and some controllable loads, can maintain its own systemwide supply and demand balance. With our mechanism, the closed-loop stability of the distributed microgrid systems can be guaranteed. In addition, we provide evaluation criteria of renewable energy utilization to validate our proposed method. Simulations show that the supply demand balance in each microgrid is achieved while, at the same time, the system operation cost is reduced, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed policy.Accepted manuscrip
On the Comparison of Stochastic Model Predictive Control Strategies Applied to a Hydrogen-based Microgrid
In this paper, a performance comparison among three well-known stochastic model
predictive control approaches, namely, multi-scenario, tree-based, and chance-constrained
model predictive control is presented. To this end, three predictive controllers have
been designed and implemented in a real renewable-hydrogen-based microgrid. The
experimental set-up includes a PEM electrolyzer, lead-acid batteries, and a PEM fuel
cell as main equipment. The real experimental results show significant differences from
the plant components, mainly in terms of use of energy, for each implemented technique.
Effectiveness, performance, advantages, and disadvantages of these techniques
are extensively discussed and analyzed to give some valid criteria when selecting an
appropriate stochastic predictive controller.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2013-46912-C2-1-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2013-482443-C2-1-
